Cintron to the DL, 'Shoes' called up

Well, that idea didn't last long.

Roch is reporting that Cintron has been placed on the DL and Freddie 'Shoes' Bynum's contract has been purchased.

This is kind of cruel.  Bynum was just released, then, all of a sudden, he's looking great now that Cintron is down and Fahey's the only other option.

Where does this team go from here?  Do we see the team begin the free-fall pundits expected to see at Spring Training?  Do they dig a trench at .500 and hope to God they stay there?  What happens?

And is it bad that part of me wants to see the team start to falter?  That way trades can be made.  Huff, Sherill, Payton, Bradford, and Walker (when he returns from the DL) could be traded relatively soon after it becomes evident that the team will be sliding.  There has to be a way to pry a shortstop away from some team.  I'm still hoping for a trade with the Brewers.  They have a fantastic prospect in Double-A who could really be a difference maker for the Os in a couple years.

Heck, trade Cabrera.  I'm tried of rooting for this guy only to have him stumble over his own tree trunk of a body/fortitude and turn back into 'Wild Thing'.

Well, that sucks.

I hope Bynum can remember how to hit this time around, that would be really nice of him.

If you count Felipe Lopez as a SS

Then we may just trade for a SS, unfortunately.

by Reddrummer9187 on Jul 1, 2008 3:34 PM EDT   0 recs

He barely counts...

but he’s still an improvement over Brandon fricking Fahey.

I'd really like

to see Lopez out here, honestly. If only because he shows me that they are still serious about trying to make improvements. I’d rather a guy who has a record of being able to hit SOMEWHERE in his past than two guys who have both proven they can’t.

by therobotian on Jul 1, 2008 4:42 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I make 2

The guy’s hitting below .250? We gotta be able to do better than THAT.

We haven’t so far. Lopez’s sorry season dwarfs that of our other shortstops.

But really I don’t want him either. The difference between Lopez and Cintron isn’t that big. Lopez had one good season in 2005. Whoopty damn doo.

well...

i thought bynum looked as good, if not better in the field and at least has a track record that suggests he’s not absolutely worthless at the plate (not very good, mind you, just not absolutely worthless). if either of those mooks could take a walk, they’d have modest utitlity value. hernandez did look okay at 2nd and bynum handles second and the outfield adequately.

Based on Triple-A numbers

Fahey was a lot better then Hernandez.

by Dr Orpheus on Jul 1, 2008 4:34 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Really, I mean, I know Luis Hernandez is better offensively than Freddie Bynum

But they are both SO bad offensively you have to count defense, and Bynum is decidedly mediocre as a defender, and Luis Hernandez is frickin terrible, because he throws like a geriatric.

Both are, however, much better than Brandon Fahey. I hate how managers seem to get excited about “versatility” Fahey is “versatile because he can theoretically play most of the posiitons on the field, but he is no good at any of them so who the fuck cares?

by math_geek on Jul 1, 2008 4:35 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm a big

Hernandez fan. I don’t know why Trembley bailed on him like that…

The kid got a bit of deer-in-the-headlights syndrome with the big leagues, but at his core he is the best of the bunch. I’d rather see him out there then Lopez or Uribe, too.

by therobotian on Jul 1, 2008 4:43 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

haha, alright, alright

I said earlier that I’d be thrilled to get Lopez from the Nats, but I really do wish they hadn’t bailed on Hernandez so quickly… I also wish Hernandez had blew it so badly for himself: it was his to lose.

umm... I dont know what my thinking is

I know we’ve lost 3 out of the last 4, and that our bullpen has been hit hard by injuries (Walker, Albers, Randor), Sherrill seems to be struggling, and we finally just found our SS only to see him hit the DL too. That means that our trajectory is downhill, but I don’t think I made any comment that it was going to stay that way.

Could we fall apart, sure, and if so, it was still a much better season than expected

by math_geek on Jul 1, 2008 5:55 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

really?

There’s still a perfectly OK chance this collection of, erm, talent pulls in at about 65 wins. It’d be awful, but it wouldn’t be the single most amazing thing ever, either.

Finally

Someone agrees! I have been rooting for the O’s to lose since MacPhail traded away Tejada and showed us that he meant buissness. Some teams can rebuild by winning, but I just don’t think that is going to be the O’s. I would much rather rebuild into the Tampa Bay Rays than the Oakland A’s. I wouldn’t care if the O’s dumped every single guy over the age of 30, sans one or two exceptions, as it is at least giving the young guys a chance.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

by Baltimo on Jul 1, 2008 5:57 PM EDT   0 recs

I never could/will root for them to lose

Because when they win it means they are playing well and our major league players are building value, which is far more valuable than a higher draft pick. So even in rebuilding it helps to win.

by Reddrummer9187 on Jul 1, 2008 11:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm not sure

If this holds true under MacPhail, but with losing comes the incentive to trade away guys who are over the hump. We will have to wait and see what Andy does, but most teams that are losing are more inclined to usher in the youth movement with less hesitation than the pretenders who think they’re one guy away at the all star break.

down on the farm...

besides all these band-aids we have mentioned; who else is in the organization? Bowie has Blake Davis hitting below .250, 15 errors, & leads the team in whiffs. Billy Rowell use to play short, but he’s geared for third now. Unfortunately, we’ve been spoiled for the last 25 years with the likes of Cal & miggy @ short. All we need is someone to play around average shortstop. (i would volunteer, but i wouldn’t hit any higher 7 then you guys would bash me (ha ha).
