Gameday Thread: Royals (38-45) @ O's (41-40)
Kansas City Royals at Baltimore Orioles, Jul 1, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
Uh ohhhh. Slow death march to .500 and beyond?
7:05 :: MASN :: 76° W 9 MPH (WNW) :: Rain: 30%
Today's Starting Pitchers GS IP ERA WHIP BAA HR BB K W-L Luke Hochevar - RH - #44 13 78.1 4.60 1.51 .271 8 36 48 5-5 Radhames Liz - RH - #62 5 23.2 5.70 1.39 .230 4 13 18 2-0
Liz has really only pitched poorly in one game (6/20 @ MIL). He's also amazingly allowed exactly four hits in every single start. Hochevar had a nice eight-inning outing against the Rockies last time out, but the defending NL champs are 19 games under .500, so big deal.

His ERA is largely a result of that one terrible start. The rest of his starts have been fine, exactly what you could expect from a guy in his position in the best case. His WHIP is good, his K-rate is good. He could stand to cut down the walks, obviously.

I thought Danny was pitching tonight...
but, hey, it’s Rad. Time to rearrange some fantasy line-ups, then.
Goal for Rad: Pitch at least 6 innings
Obviously walking less would help that along. He’s only pitched 6 innings in one of his starts (Pittsburgh). Liz, Olson, and Burres all need to step it up in the innings pitched department.
"We’re not concerned about what other teams think. I know teams come in here thinking we’re playing the Orioles. And then 9 innings later, they got the loss, they know what we’re about." ~Adam Jones
Looking forward to it.
Going to the game tonight. Will be excited to see Liz pitch in person.
When he's on, he's something
Went to teh PIT game, and his stuff was good. At least, what I could tell from 200 feet away or so…

Golden opportunity for Liz
The Royals probably have the worst offense in the AL. They are tied for 12th in runs scored despite playing in a hitters park.
They are last in the AL in walks.
They hit RHP even worse than they hit LHP (693 OPS vs RHP, 749 OPS vs LHP).
Their best hitter (DeJesus) is out due to injury. He’s also the Royals best hitter vs RHP (885 OPS).
I’d really like to see Rad dominate here. I hope I didn’t just jinx him.
and they're winning a lot of games right now
So hey.
"Yesterday I was lying, today I am telling the truth." -- Bob Arum
And they may continue their winning ways...
Hochevar can be nasty when he’s on.
But that doesn’t mean that Liz shouldn’t shred this lineup.
Great, we can go to extras 1-1 again...

that game against the cubs...
he was really dropping some ridiculous changeups. i think duck and i were talking about one at bat versus derek lee where he threw a 94 mph heater than, like, an 83 mph changeup for the whiff-k. it was pretty sweet.
foghat goes with everything--birdman, 5/16/08
That changeup to Lee was SICK
I mean, 93, 94, 84. Lee had no chance.

just sayin'
This is interesting.
My 17-year old cat, Normandie, has just told me she’d be happy to play shortstop for the Orioles, in return for a case of catnip and some yarn to play with. Oh, and someone has to buy her a very small glove.
Does anyone have a number for The Warehouse?

17 is pretty old
We’re trying to get younger, zk, younger! Besides, I already got an try out for my cat. They like that she’s a local cat, they think it’ll help with hometown pride. Plus she’s already got orange, black, and white fur. It’s a perfect fit.

17 is Julio Franco in cat years
But my cat is 15 so I guess there isn’t too much advantage.

Where they give you total offensive production by a position? They don’t seem to have it on baseball-reference though they do have defense by position.

I don't think I can use that
It’s telling me I have to have a premium account to use the sortable stats feature. And I don’t really understand that table. Under POS which I assume is position it has 1-12? Anyhow, that’s position by league it seems, I was hoping to break it down by teams. Thanks though.

you know
I have no issue with Buck thinking that starting pitching is the way you win in Major League Baseball, but his insistence that it’s essentially all you need is a little dumb. Plus, bringing up Tampa Bay is goofy. They can hit, for one thing, and for another thing, they dominate at home. They have the fourth-worst staff ERA in the AL on the road.

Adam Loewen has very good stuff
And I don’t know how some people think otherwise.
He gets great late movement on his fastball and he throws hard enough for a lefty. His breaking stuff is just nasty.
Too bad he has zero command.

But the guy gets a raw deal around here and some people claim that he has no talent.
A shitty team like the Orioles should give a 24-yo with that kind of stuff (and just 500 innings of professional experience) lots and lots and lots of chances.
They have
and they do. And that would explain a lot about the last 10 years here.

Sar-farty is sort of Parrish-y
He pitches to every batter in every situation like it’s game seven of the World Series, 4-3 on the scoreboard, bases loaded, two out, and a 3-2 count.

my eyes may have deceived me, I was on the phone and watching
during the second inning Loewen pitched, and I was never that much of a Loewen fan to begin with, where he was saved by that double play, which didn’t look like an easy DP
Yerkees still 2-2, top 9. Oh, and Sid sitting on the Yerkees bench looks like
a post-game buffet waiting to happen.

OK, can't find the new Orioles Magic video

Orioles Magic
Anyone else been to a game and seen the O’s Magic video at the end of the games with Millar lipsynching the words? That was hysterical. He’s our mascot now, too!
OH yeah
And I should add, this is the first time I’ve been to a game where everyone was on their feet in the stands, going NUTS. People were cheering for Sherrill like it’s nobody’s business to get that last out, and he took KC down swingin’. What a game!
i was at that game...
against the stros a couple weeks back on the porch by eutaw street when melmo smacked that game winning double off the wall almost right in front if us. it was the first win i’ve seen this year and the frist time i’ve seen the orioles magic vid at OPACY…makes the experience all the more amusing.
