Jays 6, O's 5: Another blown game
JESUS CHRIST, JESUS CHRIST, JESUS CHRIST!
George Sherrill came in and gave the game away with a 5-4 lead in the ninth. That's our All-Star! Jim Johnson did his job in the eighth, giving up two to let Toronto back in anyway.
This is getting really, really, really ugly, and anyone wanting to hold onto the veterans on this team needs to get the F real. I'm serious. They're coming back to reality, and it's bad news, bears.

Can I say this...
Fuck the umpiring crew for this series, and their enormous zone for Jays pitchers and much, much smaller zone for O’s pitchers, the missed call at home last night, and the general shittiness.
Anyway, I’m tired, pissed, and I have to work early, so yeah.

No.

Major League
I love, love, love that movie. I’ve secretly rooted for the Indians because of it since 1989. I’m still surprised the franchise let themselves be mocked in such a way, but it was a huge success in the end, I think.
To this day, I always quote that movie. “Yo, bartender, Jobu needs a refill!”

Whining won't solve it......but year by year, the O's are....
....quietly becoming the LA Clippers of MLB. Cannot totally excuse “overuse” of the bullpen (as Tom Davis and Rick “cotton mouth” Dempsey continually do…..they excuse everything…..apologists!!)
(Seriously, though, Rick…....you aren’t THAT old….somebody (from the creative and funny “annoucing camps” commercials on MASN …PLEASE, PLEASE help Rick. He states and overstates the obvious and the cotton in his mouth (listen to him) makes me mute and mute and mute. (Hunter, Palmer and Martinez are great….really. On target, on point and eloquent (particularly Hunter and Palmer, who could easily become a GREAT team, if powers would allow). BUT, Dempsey should not be in any media (and for anyone who thought he should be a manager….....come on!? Really? He is simple (cognitively) has no fire….....and with due respect to his playing days and well earned legend, is NOT capable. WHY, why, why…....is Gary Thorne considered great? His pipes are superior, but next time you listen/watch….count the # of small and not so small mistakes he makes both per inning and game….......A TON!! He also has significantly MORE vocal inflection and better affect when the OTHER TEAM is in a rally, than he does with the O’s!! Truly. (Although if anyone could top it, it’s fake and faker on the radio. Over articulating everything because they LOVE their own voices more than they love…...well…..anything. These two are funny. “D” or the “duh sound at the end of a word or sentence of Angel = horrifying sounds and Manfra, while seemingly a nice guy tries SO hard to be “cool and deep piped” ......count his “uhs” and “and uhs”...........sad. P.S. on Thorne (who in the hell is Dave Trom-Blaye….........I think, I THINK it is Trembley and he never, ever gets a name right…......trying way too hard you freaky looking fool!)
Ok, this was rant on the broadcast team which doesn’t help the pain the pitching is causing ( this team has OVERachieved on offense and have found themselves with pitching and defense…....ugh!) Seeing our “tough guy, fearless” leader Trom-blay sit stoic and unemotional does NOT do much for his reputation as being much tougher and making much better decisions when things were, well…...magic! He is overrated and, frankly, takes himself too seriously.
Bat Millar 3rd again….hmmmmmmmmmmm…......keep Jones in the EIGHT spot….....hmmmmmmmmm …......bring in yet ANOTHER Norfolk noname to make his debut with runners in scoring position and then look gruff and tough when you take the ball from yet, another….....failed relief effort!! Don’t demand better leadership from “B-rob’ (who worries a lot more about himself)........don’t EVER, ever have the defensive waste of space catcher go talk to his pitcher (terrrible defensive catcher who used to be slightly above average….......wheels-bus-OFF!) Looks like the “Crow” may be able to go in and play SS, as nobody else can.
If you told me in mid March that 90 games in they would be 44-46, I would have loved it and likely not fully believed it…............I think what hurts is that the expectations were raised by a team with virtually NO pressure playing above themselves for 3 months. Great. Appreciated. How about “SOMEBODY” add something beyond hair dye to the party and have a productive, clear the air, closed door meeting…....it’s time. (and, if bleach blonde et al happen to restructure the announcing teams in the process…......even better!! A guy can dream, right!!) I love this team, but right now I hate their effort and results…....

Listened to the last inning in the car while driving home from work. I really miss being able to curse into blogsphere when the O’s put in performances like this. I saw this tidbit from Jayaon Stark.
Bird land: As the Orioles continue to dance around .500, their interest in unloading players - even veteran players - seems to diminish by the day. Once upon a time, for instance, they traded for George Sherrill with the thought of spinning him before the deadline. Six months later, says an executive of one club, “they told us they’re not motivated to move him now.” There are still a few random pieces for sale—Chad Bradford and Kevin Millar, for instance. But finishing .500 has never felt more important in Baltimore than it seems to feel this year.
Andy, George’s value peaked about two weeks ago and now it’s plummeting. Trade Mr. Flatbill before his value decreases even more. Thank you.
Wolf, wolf, wolf.

Ugly is OK right now
You hear the rumors about letting the team be and see if they can somehow stay on this magic carpet ride. Perhaps the front office, and I’m thinking of the past decade holdovers who are consider success to be “not losing”, need to be bashed in the teeth with reality.
This team is shallow and has no future. Keep fixing it! Let this season go.
by drj on Jul 10, 2008 10:42 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think the plan is still in effect.
That’s not to say that parts of the plan may not have changed recently, or that the pieces they’re offering are going to be let go for the random minor league castoffs that some people seem to be begging for…I’d much rather them ride out this current rough patch with their current roster than blow it up entirely and just make it worse for the hope of an improved draft pick or whatever other idiocy people seem to be pushing around here and other places on the web…
by getxstoked on Jul 10, 2008 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
hmmmm
No one is begging for minor league castoffs. If there are any reasonable deals for guys like Roberts and Cabrera, the FO should jump on them. Huff maybe, I doubt he’s fooling anyone. Sherrill has also gone down a few notches before the trading deadline. If these guys aren’t being shopped, the O’s aren’t being honest with themselves or the fans about the desire to build a reasonable foundation. Let the young pitchers take their lumps and see if any trades can bring in more youth. Letting the veterans ride it out and see what happens is the same crap we’ve had for years, and we pretty much know where it’s headed.

There was a reason Sherrill was a long relief man in Seattle. He had an amazing string of, let’s face it, luck. And that luck is gone.

Miggi’s a good player, and we should have gotten something for him.
Now, it was a dumb deal for the Astros to make, as they aren’t sniffing the playoffs with or without him, but the cost of a player is not based on how close the buying team is to contention.

Patton and Costanzo are long shots to make it to the bigs
Albers and Sarfate are relief pitchers, albeit pretty good ones.

Trading Sherrill
Honestly, closers blow saves, it happens. It is like getting kicked in the balls when it happens, but it happens. Sherrill has been great for us and is going through a rough streak. Therefore it is no time to trade him. Selling low is never a good plan. Also why give up on him now? He is under contract for a while at a cheap price, and if he can put things back together between now and the end of the year, he will have a good bit of value again.

you shouldn’t root for the yankees or red sox. i won’t. but i won’t root for the rays just b/c they’re NOT the yankees or red sox.
maybe i’ll change my tune if they’re still at/near the top of the division at the end of the season, having successfully run the gauntlet of divisional play, but i reserve the right to be a curmudgeon about the success of expansion teams, logical or not!

I’m “rooting for” the Rays just because I like lots of their players. I would also like to see them in the playoffs for two reasons:
1. Someone new, and it blocks EITHER the Yankees or Red Sox.
2. Maybe if they make the playoffs someone will build them a real stadium.

That's my main thing
I just want someone other than the Yankees and the Red Sox. I just want someone new. Plus I (like many others) love an underdog, and that’s what they are. Maybe they won’t be in a few years, and that’s fine. But this year and maybe next year, the Rays are an awesome story.

Yup
I want someone who is not the Yankees or the Red Sox, and who is also not the Toronto Blue Jays

AL East
I like what’s happening with the Rays because it shows it is possible to compete in the AL East.

Fact is, the Orioles, Rays and even Blue Jays have been among the worst-run teams in baseball for, oh, ten years or so. It’s not a mystery why the 1-2 doesn’t change, it’s just that most people get the answer wrong because it’s easy to damn money than to be competent at your job.

They paid plenty of dues
Years in the cellar and now some ownership that has a head on their shoulders. I can’t begrudge them that.
They are young, aggressive, don’t have a sense of entitlement, don’t rely on a bloated payroll. They aren’t bloated with asshole front runner fans. I would love for the O’s to be such a team.

that’s more on the frontrunner fans comment than the o’s comment.

oh, see I was about to get offended
as you were implying that the O’s were loaded with asshole frontrunner fans.
We’re not even frontrunners in the Strasburg Sweepstakes.

I'm also finding it hard for root for the Rays...
and I ain’t even gonna try, fuck ‘em. I root for one team, couldn’t care less what happens with the others. Except for the Yankees, who I always want to fail
the Rays will always be a fake-ass franchise to me, they still don’t have a respectable professional looking uniform, 90% of their fans are bandwagon jumpers who never cared about them til this year….fuck ‘em. I know people love an underdog, but I can’t get with this bullshit

and when the rays win a couple division and a couple titles...
then THEY can aspire to such depths of ugliness. the o’s uni when they first became competitive was pretty damn sweet, iirc.

I think the new Rays uniforms
look pretty sharp. Better than most of the turdy ass new uniforms unveiled recently in San Diego, Arizona and Washington. Frankly I don’t see what’s not to like about them. Besides the dumbass team name, that is.

I'll probably be at both weekend games
So winning at least one would be nice.
