O's 5, Royals 2: Ol' Nine Inning Cabrera
Daniel Cabrera gave up a leadoff home run to a returning David DeJesus, then pitched a complete game with just one more run allowed. He walked nobody. Nice game, Danny.
Aubrey Huff hit a home run. Aubrey Huff is the greatest ballplayer in the galaxy.

The Orioles have officially scored one more run then they've allowed

lets keep it that way the rest of the year
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I'll take that...
on a PER GAME basis, no problem. Always score one more run that allowed each game. Works for me…

Awesome game by Danny!
Now I’m watching the Red Sox implode against the Rays on ESPN.

God, I think I'm jumping on the Rays bandwagon
if the Orioles can’t get there, I’ll be rooting for the Rays to win the WS

Dude
I’ve been on the Rays bandwagon for quite some time. I’m their frontrunner. Next year after the Rays win the World Series I’m going to be all up in Camden Yards in my pink Rays hat all WOOOOO!
(well, maybe not all that, but I am rooting for them this year)

i'm still lookin for someone else..
but so far, i think i’m the only one who actually bet for a good Rays team this year. I have a few bags of coffee on the following standings:
1. red sox
2. tampa rays
3. ny yankees
4. blue jays
5. o’s
that was pre-season! even though the standings aren’t exactly like that right now.. i think they may be.. as good as the rays are, i still think the damn sox can pull it off for the division.. and the O’s will most likely trade off several guys and then sink. hope i’m wrong on the latter

you're not
Baseball Prospectus had them winning 88 games and almost everyone else with a clue (nobody on TV) thought they were a nice sleeper team.

I missed the game of course.
But I think a few people owe Danny an apology for JUMPING DOWN HIS THROAT IN THE FIRST INNING.

i was around for that.
and then what he went and did. DESPITE EVERYONE PISSING ON HIM.
He’ll never be perfect, but people have to back the fuck off. He went through a bad stretch. It happens. He also had 9 quality starts in a row before the bad stretch.
I’m not saying he’s going to be our ace, but he’s obviously better this year. He changed his game. Then they adjusted. Now maybe he’s adjusting back. Can we stop throwing the book at him when he has bad early innings?
Sheesh.
by zknower on Jul 2, 2008 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I understand what you're saying
although, to be fair, he didn’t look very good for the first 3 innings today.
Cabrera is inconsistent, so we’re looking for what we are going to see from the first couple innings, whereas someone like Guts gets a pass, because we know he recovers and gets over it. Major props for Danny Cabs getting his act together, which most people will agree happened right after that balk when Coach Kranitz came up to the mound and read him the riot act. Then he was pitching much more cleanly, and he became quite fun to watch. Walking no-one was incredible.
But do you really think we wouldve given a free pass to Olson or Burres if the lead-off guy hit a home run on his first day off the DL?

I went to this one
with my Pappy. Daniel was mowing them down. It’s the fourth, then you look up and it’s the seventh, then you look up and it’s the ninth. He was efficient, holy crap. Holy CRAP.
He didn’t even throw behind the next guy’s head when he balked that runner over.
I reserve the right to believe that he’s a head case, however.
Huge win for Danny. Huge for our bullpen. Huge.

He may have helped this team
win TOMORROW’S game with that CG. Bullpen needed a night off, and they got it.

Time of game: 2 hours, 16 minutes.

and that’s with a 20 pitch 9th inning. Went INTO the 9th at 85. Damn.

Cabrera
I see Cabrera as much better pitcher this yr.
pitched a great game tonite.I,d like to see
someone invest in teaching him to field
his position.

Fielding his position
is gonna be hard no matter what, since he’s SIX FEET NINE FREAKIN’ INCHES TALL.
That’s a serious detriment. No way around it.

yeah
Randy Johnson never got good at it either. Of course Randy Johnson is going to the Hall of Fame and Daniel Cabrera is striving to be league average.

When you strike them out
or give up fly balls, you don’t have to be as good a fielder. But if Ground Ball Danny (he’s, what, 3rd in the AL in ground balls?) continues with this approach, his lack of fielding is going to hurt him much worse than Randy’s ever affected him.

Good thing the Royals can't hit.
I remember Gary and Buck talking about how Danny boy didn’t have his best stuff. It appears not (only two Ks), but the Royals really are a terrible-hitting team, and it’s good to take advantage of that when you can.
by pipkin on Jul 3, 2008 8:02 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I'll take just 2 Ks
as long as they come with ZERO walks.

yeah...
pair that w/ 7 hits in 9 ip and you have a WHIP under 1. kind of amazing for danny cabs.
i can actually totally see him throwing a flawed no-no at some point (like, no hits, but 5 walks, a balk, 2 wp and an error leading to, like, 2 runs).

2 Ks isn’t that off for him anymore. His strikeout rate stinks now. Man if he’d kept the strikeouts we’d really have something.

As the walks came down, so did the Ks.
I’m sure there’s got to be a connection.
