Gameday Thread: Blue Jays (49-51) @ O's (48-51)

Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles, Jul 24, 2008 12:05 PM EDT

UPDATE: Might as well continue using the GameDay Thread from last night. A new one for the 2nd game will appear at 12:15 for that game.

Capt Capt

Today's Starting Pitchers GS IP ERA WHIP BAA HR BB K W-L
A.J. Burnett - RH 21 (22) 134.0 4.84 1.45 .259 12 60 132 10-9
Jeremy Guthrie - RH 21 135.0 3.60 1.24 .250 16 39 88 6-7

Guthrie is coming off a start in which he got the win, but wasn't very effective at all.

Go figure.

There is an 80% chance of rain tonight.

You could watch it if you had the MLB package on DirecTV.

It’s 3-3, bottom of the 6th, Mets have 1st and 2nd with one out. (Maine failed to bunt the runners over.)

by Birds Man of Bethesda on Jul 23, 2008 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm thinking of getting DirecTV

Because my cable provider sucks. Are there any drawbacks beside losing the signal in storms? And how often does that happen?

by dkdc on Jul 23, 2008 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I had it living in Indiana, and it happened quite often, pretty much anytime there was a lot of wind or rain it would drop out…

I'm in MD

and we get dropouts, but it’s got to be raining pretty damn hard. And with TiVo, we still have stuff to watch. And it’s cheaper than Comcast in Salisbury. And since I put everything in, I don’t have any equipment failures. :)

DirecTV

The signal may disappear for a bit when a storm is coming (interestingly, the signal normally is fine during the storm; it’s only when the storm is close by), but the cable companies always seem to lose their signal for hours when there’s a storm. We’ve had our dish since August 2000 - got it for English soccer - and it’s insanely great. Oh, yes, the price of satellite TV is the same today as it was in 2000.

by Birds Man of Bethesda on Jul 23, 2008 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

PS

This was a heavy storm, and we lost our signal for about ten minutes. Dropping off the cable TV box was one of the happiest days of my life.

by Birds Man of Bethesda on Jul 23, 2008 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm gonna do it

My cable is so bad that I don’t get half the channels I pay for EVER. Rain or shine.

Also, I see their sports pack has MASN, which is obviously not available on cable in Brooklyn.

which package do you have? I’m tempted by the supreme package + NFL Sunday Ticket. It looks like pretty much every channel under the sun, in HD.

by dkdc on Jul 23, 2008 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions

you won't get MASN, alas

i looked into this. they match your sportspak to the billing zipcode. so you;d have to get extra innings.

by zknower on Jul 23, 2008 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions

That's annoying

They certainly made it look like I would on the website. I’m guessing they buried that little nugget in a footnote somewhere.

Also, how “SOUTH” does the dish have to face? I have outdoor space that faces north, but I could probably get a sliver of the southern sky if I place the dish properly.

by dkdc on Jul 23, 2008 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

satellites are all over the equator more or less

in geostationary orbit.

so, “southern skies” means, “able to get a bead on a satellite hovering over the equator.

Yep

Brownstone in Prospect Heights, which means I’m stuck with Cablevision, unlike you lucky TWC people.

I do have a deck that faces north, so I’d rather put the dish there to avoid going through the landlord, but it sounds like I might be forced to go with the roof.

by dkdc on Jul 23, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

are you top floor?

if so, maybe you could put a pole on the deck that raises it above the roofline.

i’ve also seen them literally hanging out people’s windows in sections of queens. you could probably jury-rig something in your living room, but then again, who wants a dish in their living room?

by zknower on Jul 23, 2008 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

3rd floor

I’ll figure something out. Anything to avoid paying those Cablevision idiots.

by dkdc on Jul 23, 2008 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions

That's correct. If you want the out-of-market games, you need to get the

MLB Package. You get the regional sports channels with a sports package, but they block the games on those channels. You need to get the big package. It’s $180 for MLB, but they will spread the cost over four months.

I don’t care about the NFL, so I don’t do the Sunday package, but if you like English soccer, you can see about 80 percent of the games by getting Fox Soccer Channel plus Setanta.

by Birds Man of Bethesda on Jul 23, 2008 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, the Regional Sports package is kinda useless

Anything you’d want to watch – NBA, NHL, MLB – is all blacked out, and MLS may be, also.

Time for my every-inning rant about Thorne

As they cut to the break, Thorne announced that in light of the rain, Toronto’s run may be a big one. Duh…it’s only a big one if the inning’s completed, and if they resume play, the game presumably will go beyond this inning. In other words, it’s not a big run because of the rain.

Plus

Stairs is a lefty and Rolen is a righty, so Cormier has the “advantage” so to say. That and the DP.

Second run wouldn’t have scored without Hernandez’s and Bierd’s teamwork.

It's pretty clear

That besides Markakis, Jones, Jim Johnson, and Guthrie, every single player on this team is 100% expendable and should be traded.

August and September might be another 15-45 or so record.

Scott Downs looks like a lesbian

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.
