Nady, Marte trade reconfigured
It looks like Nady, and Marte have been traded from the Pirates, and speculation is that its too the MFY and what i'm reading over at MLB trade rumors is that the Pirates are getting Class AAA right-hander Ross Ohlendorf, Class AA right-handers Phil Coke and George Kontos and Class AA outfielder Jose Tabata.
This probably increases Sherill's value because it means one less good relief option on the market. Neither Marte or Nady scares me. Nady is a solid player with a lot of talent having a career year and Marte is a decent 33 year old reliever. Also Tabata is the best player that the pirates are getting back (19 year old outfield that hit really well at A+ last year).
Speculation is that Steve Pearce will come up and take his spot in the outfield.
Update:
The Yankees are sending RHP Dan McCutchen, RHP Jeff Karstens, OF Jose Tabata and RHP Ross Ohlendorf to Pittsburgh for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte.
LHP Phil Coke and RHP George Kontos are not in the deal.
That is from MLB trade rumors.

trade
Nady is no lineup changer or anything, but he’ll help the Yankees. Yankees just better hope he doesn’t go on his typical second half fade. And Marte will help out their bullpen a lot.
Jose Tabata was the centerpiece of the deal. He could become major league regular or be out of the league within three seasons. Way too much projection involved on this kid. The other three pitchers are sort of meh type of guys.
Seems like a pretty even trade for both teams considering Nady wasn’t gonna resign with the Bucs

Kontos is better than Meh
Was rated a B at the beginning of the year by sickels and a 3.77 ERA with 103/43 K/BB and 97 Hits in 107.1 IP at AA (age 23) would do nothing to change that.
Probably a good back end starter or set-up guy/closer.
Tabata is a wild card, but a potential star so I would rather have a high risk/reward prospect.
Nady has one more arb. year left.

another trade that doesn't bode for Sherrill
Marte AND X for 3 pieces of crap and a solid prospect in Tabata who’s struggling in AA but is only 19. Seriously, if Marte and X can only land one good prospect, Sherrill can’t do much better.

True
But remember there are only so many relief pitching options on the market, and a lot of teams that need help. Street, Sherill and Fuentes are the best options left. And if you need a lefty Sherill and Fuentes are the only ways to go. Also the Rox have been asking for Buchholz and players of that caliber for Fuentes, and Street wont come cheap. So the cheaper options are gone, and we are banking that a team gets desperate. If not then flatbill is here for a bit longer.

If we can't get a good prospect for Sherrill, then he'll play for Baltimore.
I’m OK with that. We all assume Sherrill’s stock is at it’s highest, but if people aren’t wanting to give anything for him, then it’s better to hold on to him and hope his stock goes up some more.

The teams looking for relievers weren’t willing to outbid the D-backs or Yanks for Rauch and Marte. I don’t think they’ll suddenly up their offer for Sherrill unless an injury happens on their current roster.

Exactly. Is Tonya Harding looking for a job?

The facts
“The Yankees are sending RHP Dan McCutchen, RHP Jeff Karstens, OF Jose Tabata and RHP Ross Ohlendorf to Pittsburgh for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte.
“LHP Phil Coke and RHP George Kontos are not in the deal.”

Another thing
Marte will probably bolt the Yanks looking for a multi-year deal, and theres a decent chance he will be a type A free agent, which would mean two high compensation picks for the Yanks, making the deal much more lopsided.

but
there is also a chance he accepts the arbitration knowing the demand for a type-A FA thats a LOOGY isn’t very high.
Nady’s OPS for the past three years has been 100 points lower after the all star break.
What if Marte accepts arbitration, Nady puts up an OPS of .793 for the rest of the year (his career average) and Nady eventually becomes a type-B free agent after next season. Or what if Marte ends up being a type B free agent after getting shelled in the AL east? The pirates didn’t want to take the chance Marte accepted arbitration and they had to pay a LOOGY $3 million. Also the guys they got will be able to contribute when Andrew McCuttchen and Alvarez are around. I dont see why people think this trade was lopsided or close to lopsided.

Usually teams decline offering arbitration if they feel that there’s a risk of the player accepting.

I don’t know… the guys they received all sound very iffy. It’s a type of trade where you wouldn’t be surprised if all four guys received never contribute to the big league team. Tabata is the only player with upside, but he seems to be volatile asset at this point.

Arbitration
If they dont offer Marte arbitration then they wouldn’t collect any draft picks as compensation.
I dont think they got any guaranteed starters, but I think a couple of those guys will stick in the bullpen and maybe one can stick in the rotation against NL hitters. Tabata is a potential star, and its just hard to come across those guys, even if he is very iffy. They didn’t get much, but they didn’t give much. Before this year Nady was a Journeyman, and Marte was and is still a LOOGY. So to get anything of value or any chance at a potential star is a good return IMO.
I guess I just really dont think much of Nady at all when it comes down to it. I go to 3-4 Pirates games a year at college (its cheap and accessible), so I casually follow the Pirates as well, and before this year my opinion of Nady was on par with Jay Payton, just that he could hit more and defend less (but he always did have a fair amount of talent).
