Confirmed: Roch Leaving the Sun
Roch Kubatko has confirmed on his blog that he has accepted the Baltimore Sun's buyout package and his last day is this Friday, August 1. He says that he's still "weighing his options", and has not decided what to do yet. But never fear, he will be taking his blog with him. Say what you like about Roch, but he brings readers to that site and they're taking some self-inflicted damage by letting him walk. I still read him every day; the jokes are groaners, but he's got a lot more access to the team than almost anyone. The occasional quote or bit of breaking news makes it worth reading to me.
FanPosts are user-created content and do not necessarily reflect the views of the editors of Camden Chat or SB Nation. They might, though.

Agreed
Roch is as corny as they come, but he’s the most reliable source, by far, for rumors and minutiae about the O’s. I’ll continue to read his blog religiously wherever he goes (presumably MASN).
If he goes to MASN, it will be interesting to see if they interfere with his ability to be negative about the O’s. Roch has always seemed to toe the line enough to avoid pissing off the O’s brass, but he does have his moments where he tells it like it is.
Hopefully that won’t change.

He should be fine on MASN...
Unless he bad-mouths Burres. Then Jim Palmer might powerbomb him through the desk.

Trembley mentioned him going to MASN
in his post game yesterday.

Well, whoops.
DD needs to put spoiler warnings in his pressers. ;)

eh
Like it or not, Roch was the voice for Orioles news for a while. To have multiple daily updates is a luxury that not many MLBs team have. I wonder if the Sun will even have a replacement blog. Something similar happened a few months back. Heather Dinich had a wonderful blog that covered UMD sports (“Tracking the Terps”), she left for ESPN, and her blog was replaced by a garbage one that is only updated once a month. The Ravens Central blog by Mike Preston and company is also pretty horrible. I fear the same thing will happen to the O’s and a placeholder blog will be in effect for a while. I’m running out of reasons to even read the Sun these days.

Good move by The Sun.
This guy was awful. The only thing good about his reporting was the format, which demanded regular coverage and generally multiple posts per day on the subject. Beyond that he was a waste of time. I used to read him regularly but got so tired of his virtually non-existent writing skills and laughable choice of subject matter – Anita Marks, travel itineraries and flight delays, whining about athletes that won’t talk to him, lauding athletes that do talk to him – that I opted to just pick up the scoops on here relayed by some other poor soul who took one for the team by venturing onto his blog.

Total agreement.
By far the best thing about Roch’s blog was its format: how frequently it was updated, and the fact that it had info in spring training when other outlets didn’t. The worst thing about it was Roch’s writing style, and a general lack of content.
If you could pair the frequent updates with a good writer (or team of 2-3 of them) who actually spend some time on analysis and specific angles instead of simply regurgitating what people in the clubhouse are saying every day, then you’d have me hooked.
I can’t stand a lot of the NY sports coverage, but the NY Times’ Bats Blog is a great example of using the immediacy of the internet to its advantage. It’s updated 2-3 times a day by different writers. Topics can range from the current situation the team is in, to big news on other teams (this week: what will happen with Manny?), to occasional human interest stories in the world of baseball. Very little time is spent recapping games which, less face it, is basically filler. I don’t need game recaps when I can read the lead article about the game elsewhere.
If there was an equivalent blog for the Orioles, I’d be a daily visitor for sure.
