Mark Teixeira Traded To Angels
He's been traded for Casey Kotchman and another player, possibly Stephen Marek as mentioned by Lyle Spencer of mlb.com.
So, what does this mean for Tex this off season? Does he resign with the Angels? Sign with the Yankees? Do the Angels sign Manny if he's released? Do Os fan cry?
As a friend has pointed out Manny is pretty much just a DH at this point in his career, so the NL is out of the question.
With regards to Teixeira, he could very well resign with the Angels. They have the cash to spend and they're going to the World Series now that they have a more offense and have been dominating the Red Sox all season, giving him the chance to go to the playoffs nearly every year. Then again, the Yankees have been interested in signing him to play first. The Braves are out as they now have Kotchman, and the Os...

With all the interest...
...it’s obvious the O’s are going to have to pay a shitload of money to sign Tex. But it’s worth it. He’s a top talent 1B, year in, year out. With him in an Orioles lineup with Markakis, Jones, Wieters, Scott, possibly Roberts, and this year’s model of Huff we will cooking with serious gasolina offensively. Hope they’re getting the Brinks truck ready as we speak.

Teix will not sign early with the Angels
A Boras clients never signs early. I don’t see why Teix will be the exception. Boras reportedly wants 10 years, $230 for him. Pass.

He's already quoted as saying
he doesn’t even want to discuss a contract during the season.
Boras clients don’t sign early. We’re still in this. Most money wins.

4 years (I think) of Kotchman for a couple months of Teixeira
That’s a lot. I realize Tex has better power, and Kotchman is not a power bat at 1B. But 4 years of a decent player is a lot to give up. It’s not like the Angels were hurting this year, and this just adds more pop.
I have to think the Angels are committed to the Tex bidding wars. The O’s better have a good plan B. I just don’t buy into the “Tex has a desire to come home” angle.
Oh well, hope the Angels destroy whichever, or both, of the two yankee teams that make the playoffs.

I bet a desire for as many $$$ as possible
will outweigh a desire to play in Baltimore. Sucks for us as O’s fans, but we can’t expect him to take LESS cash to come here.
I’ll get pissed if we offer MORE and he still doesn’t come here.

This will probably knock out
Another trade suitor, I doubt the Angels of all teams would be willing to make a trade like this and then go out looking to acquire another big name (Sherrill). I don’t care for Texiera that much as I think he is demanding top 3 money for a guy who isn’t even a top 10 player.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

agreed
I dont feel like overpaying for a 1B. You can find 1B’s practically every year, and not spend $20 million a year.

what's are problem then
We haven’t had a good 1b since Raffy

I am fine with having a good 1B
But there is not need to go out and spend the money now b/c it will be 2-3 years before we are good and we could just go out and get one then because there will be more mashing 1B to come around.

Maybe this will bring some sobriety to the discussion
I think all the anticipation about getting Texiera was, shall we say, highly speculative and extremely premature? Or, more to the point, delusional. Yeah, we still have a shot at signing him as a free agent, just like everybody else does, but Andy is going to spend his money to fill the team’s (many) needs, not to satisfy some sentimental BS about the hometown boy.

Truth
It has been spoken.
For the life of me, I can’t understand how getting Teixeria will help this team outside of an investment in someone well before this team is ready to prove itself. Signing him would be a waste of money and a departure from the “Orioles Way” of pitching and defense. Sure, his defense is great, but he doesn’t pitch. Right now, the only solid pitcher in the rotation is Guthrie. That and shortstop, it’s important to be strong defensively up the middle, should be the focus. Sure, getting a big bat at first would be great and will help this team offensively, but that’s not what they need. They need to shed salary, get prospects, and prepare a foundation for the long-haul. If Teixeria is a free agent again in 2010, when this team is ready to compete, that’s when you sign him. Not now.

Honestly
If we sit around waiting for pitching to show up on this team, we could be waiting forever. Top flight pitchers are not going to sign with us…and even if they did they’d likely be even more expensive and a bigger gamble than signing Tex. Pitching is a crapshoot – and that’s not to say we shouldn’t do everything on this earth to try to get the best we can, but it is a much more unpredictable (and injury prone) commodity than a bat like Teixeira’s. With one signing we could have a top flight offense…with good shit developing and coming down the pipe as well in Jones and Wieters. We have the money to do this and everything indicates it would be a move that will pay off in a position where we need the help. Full speed ahead.

God knows signing free agent pitchers is a risky proposition
I agree, go after him.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Amen
I dont think we “need” Tex, but he should still be a target. the whole plan was stockpile pitching in the minors and trade it for position players and supplement that with FA’s. Yea, we’ll have a young staff, but a lineup (depending on who we trade and who we keep) of possibly Brob, AJ, Kakes, Tex, Weiters. Huff, Luke, Mora, and the SS du jour. yes please. they might not be ready, but we HAVE talent at pitcher. the same cannot be said for position players.

Where's all the sure talent at pitching?
We just watched the first batch of touted prospects produce less than stellar results. Loewen done, Penn – fallen off a cliff somewhere, Olson – struggling and may develop into a back of the rotation guy, Liz – looks like the BP to me, Cabrera – I’m through guessing, but still back of the rotation at best. A bunch of torn labrums. Now we hear about Tillman, Matusz (will he sign?), Arrieta, Bergensen. Frankly, given the O’s history of developing pitchers, I don’t know what to expect. That frustrates the hell out of me with this team. It’s not like they are the Twins pumping out serviceable pitchers on a seemingly yearly basis. If this new crop does pan out, it will still be another 2-3 years. I won’t be surprised if the O’s go for more help in the rotation in the off season.

never said there was sure talent at pitcher
but there is talent. thats more then we can say then with the position players. i’m not saying ditch the rebuild, but you can supplememnt it with fa’s. but again, i’m saying tex isnt a priority, but hes not a piece we should ignore either.

ok yeah, you did not say "sure"
I just hate watching all this “pitching talent” floundering or going up in smoke with injuries. The scouting, player selection, and player development has to get it together if this MacPhail vision of laying a foundation is to become a reality.

The rebuilding isn’t over, now is not time to lose sight of the plan.

Not that I'm advocating for signing Tex...
...but wouldn’t aquiring him via free agency help Andy McPhail persuade Brian Roberts’ to extend his contract? Brian wants to win and as he sees more pieces show up that will enable him to do so he may decide to stay here. The only downside is that a huge Tex contract would mean a huge Roberts contract but I’m okay with PA ponying up a little more since he’s got all of that MASN money that he hasn’t been using for player payroll.

Something wierd I just realized
Kotchman OPS: .774
Millar OPS: .766
I dont know what to think of that.

My thoughts
Kotchman started the season hot, and has worn down. Millar’s value is in his ability to take the walk, and yes, he’s got about as many HR as Kotchman. That said, Casey’s eleven years younger and under team control for 3 more years. So it’s not as if the Braves would have accepted Kevbo for Tex, though I’m sure that’s not what you’re trying to say.
by Brotz13 on Jul 30, 2008 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yea it wasn't
And Kotchman should get better with age. It was more that I was shocked that Millar is actually putting up respectable numbers when I tend to bash him very often.
