The Schmuck Stops Here

It looks like the Sun has traded in corny jokes and creepy comments about Anita Marks for reviews of Red Lobster and discussions on newly acquired Hawaiian shirts. Roch's blog is no longer on the front page of the sun.com's sports page. It's been replaced the the even worse Peter Schmuck, with the crazy play on words blog titled, "The Schmuck Stops Here."

Say what you want about Roch, but I'll take him any day of the week over this clown.

We do get this awesome picture of him, though.

I'll never forget

Joe Angel’s great line in a game broadcast a couple years ago: “There is no bigger Orioles fan than Peter Schmuck.”

Has there ever been a cooler Oriole than Eddie Murray? I mean, just straight up cool. Like a bad, suave dude. You know what I'm sayin'. COOL. SC 7/24/08

+1. Thank God for Joe Angel, whose ways of reminding eveyone that he's seated next to a functional idiot

are sufficiently subtle that neither the idiot nor his owner can detect and act upon them.

It always pissed me off when manfra calls an OPPONENT'S home run

it sounds just like he’s calling an O’s home run: peppy, happy, etc. I want my announcers to be realistically critical homers.

Like Joe Angel, who sounded REALLY pissed off when DCabs was ejected last night. You could hear it in his voice: he was fucking pissed. I liked it.

All of which reminds me...

I don’t know if anyone keeps tabs on The Loss Column, but they’ve been doing Baltimore Media Approval Ratings once a week. Schmuck is this week’s candidate, and he’s at 67% approval. This cannot stand.

Great, just great

We’ll get ONE update a day if we’re lucky, it probably won’t even include the lineup, and will be more reviews of restaurants than actual news. Name the last news story Peter broke. Really, I’ll wait….

We’ll be better served with just posting links to the Press Pass articles from orioles.com. They will have infinitely more info than we will get out of the lazy and unproductive Peter Schmuck.

Seriously, how does this guy have a job? He write bad columns. He doesn’t do game stories. I’m betting he doesn’t even go into the lockerroom, a la Jay Marriottii. And THIS is our new fountain of information on the O’s?

Forget ever learning about a roster move or injury diagnosis again. But you sure will now what the tablecloths at every Red Lobster in the American League look like…

You watch, we’re gonna be missing Roch within 2 weeks when someone leaves a game and there’s an MRI the next day and Peter’s posting about his dessert in Little Italy the night before.

Roch was often

the first source of info involving roster moves and injuries and updates from the minors. God knows he was no Earnest Hemingway, but if I had to wait for Zrbiec to tell us about a change in the rotation or a roster move, well, we might as well be living in 1991 – we’ll read it in the agate two days later.

You're so cute

It doesn’t work that way. Sure, his editor COULD tell him that, then Jeff says, “No, not in my union contract,” and then there’s arbitration and negotiations over pay, and then his blog conists of posting the lineup sometime during the 2nd inning each game and that’s it….

and I’m a union guy through and through. I’ve always gotten the feeling Jeff wants to file his ONE game story a day and be done. Maybe I’m wrong, but the amount of feature or non-game stories you get out of him is MINIMAL and his online presence is almost non-existent. I can’t imagine this is an oversight or an accident.

Roch's Final Post

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/roch/blog/2008/07/final_post-farewell.html

There’s the link if you care to read it. I hope he pops up with another blog because it was one of the very few things worth reading in the Sun. I checked it everyday for line-ups, information, and just general entertainment. The naysayers will always be there, but they will miss it when the Sun can’t give us the information we’d like to here.

Funny..

Notice that the posting was actually put up by some guy named Tim Wheatley.

Did the Sun take away Roch’s posting privileges a few days early?

It appears that way

I’m guessing he had some sick days left and decided to check out early. I don’t blame him.

That, too

although Trembley seems to say it’s an open secret Roch is going to MASN during a recent presser.

And I’m reading stuff that Diamond Dave and MASN don’t get along too well these days and it may bode ill for his continued employment. He hates Wired Wednesday specifically and many of MASN’s intrusions in general.

The O’s haven’t picked up his 2009 option, and PGA’s son is in charge of MASN. This could end badly.

I know sometimes people bash DD here

and sometimes it is completely deserved, but is there anyone out there who doesn’t LOVE Trembley? I’d take a bullet for the guy, personally. If they fire him (don’t extend his contract) just because he objects to the instrusive tv bullshit that I also hate – well, that would righteously piss me off.

Me? I love the guy. I’d by him dinner and a beer, and just say thank you as I left him in peace to eat his meal.

Do a Google News search

on Trembley and MASN

Or just check out WNST’s blog rundown. And just listen to his post-game pressers for a week. Or the tone of his voice when Rick Dempsey attempts to ask a stupid question.

I still don’t see much of anything that says a lot of people at MASN dislike Trembley. I’m not saying it’s false, just I’ve never read much about it. As far as I know, MASN is full of a bunch of jokers. Perhaps these were the people DD went off about when they were yucking it up in the clubhouse after a crummy loss.

Actually, I would think the guy who counts the most is MacPhail. If some of DD’s bluntness rubs MacPhail the wrong way, that’s not good for DD’s long term employment prospects (even though I love hearing it).

I like DD

He tells the truth. Someone is dogging it? He says so. The starting pitching stinks? He says so.

Lord knows we’ve spent years listening to pure bullshit from the Peter Angelos front office. MacPhail is more straightforward, but DD is probably the most blunt. That kind of stuff can be hazardous for your career.

Only thing I haven’t heard him say is “I screwed up”.

by drj on Jul 30, 2008 2:43 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Hm, that's a good point

I wonder if he has ever taken the blame for anything? Or should he? SC’s signature used to be a good quote by Leyland (which I’ll paraphrase): “I don’t want any credit if we’re good, but I don’t want the blame if we’re horseshit, either.”

“That was a great move I made.”

He gives the players credit, by name. And he calls them out individually, too.

The Sun is setting

Letting Roch accept a buyout was shows that the Sun doesnt really understand how to respond to the web. Roch doesn’t write the best blog I read, but I do read it.

Roch was doing the things that make a blog interesting. He was going to places like spring training, minor league games, the warehouse, etc. and giving us a look at what he’s seeing. Dial back the off-topic riffs and the dumb jokes and he’s got a good blog.

Not everyone can do what he was doing. I doubt the Sun realizes they lost something valuable that will be hard to replace.

How long do you think this was in the works? Roch evidently knew for a while that The Sun offered him a buyout and The Sun seemed to have Pete’s new blog ready to go. I actually kind of like Schmuck, though. He’s responded personally to every email I sent him. Well, each of the two or three I’ve sent. One of which was making fun of his picture. Schmuck's ridiculous bio
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport—except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world … and the rest of the world, for that matter … he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.

Well. Things certainly aren’t starting well, are they?

Hint to “Mr. Schmuck”: Adoring yourself in your own column smacks of vanity and self-aggrandizement. It’s not likely to win you any fans.
