Manny to the DODGERS in 3-team trade
Yup, Linda Cohn is breathlessly reporting on ESPNews that Manny has indeed been shipped to the Dodgers. From the BP chat:
- Manny Ramirez + $7 mil to LA
- Jason Bay to Boston
- Andy LaRoche, Bryan Morris (LA #1 in '06), Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss (both BOS) to PIT
So there you go. Manny, go be Manny on the Left Coast. And wear sunscreen.

God bless the Dodgers
I wonder if Torre was really hot for this deal?

Of course he was
He gets a vet bat and gets to get rid of one of those meddlin’ kids! He really doesn’t like playing anyone any 30 if he can avoid it.

Andruw Jones?? Have you SEEN what he’s batting these days?

how many games has he played?
The number equals exactly that many too many. He is maybe the worst player in the league. I’d rather have Fahey.

This year? Hells yeah, bring on Lil' Bro.
Jones’s BA is .167. Not only is he not batting his own bloated weight, he’s not batting BRANDON’S weight.

65 games, with almost 200 ABs
This isn’t a case of small sample size. Dude’s lost it. His OPS+ last year was 86, this year it’s 36. Dude’s SLG is .250. That’s slugging, dude. He’s freakin’ SLUGGING Two-Fiddy.

I realize he stinks
and misspoke about only have 2 vets. So the numbers is 4. My point was that they DO play a ton of younger players even if it is out of necessity…Loney, Martin, Ethier, Kemp, that kid at 3rd, Furcal (that may be a stretch), Kershaw is up.

Ethier and Kemp are JUST NOW
getting a fair shot at playing, Loney should have been playing almost 2 years ago, and Torre is looking for excuses to keep Jones and/or Pierre in the lineup. He’s setting that team back at least 2 years.

I was OK with him...
until he assaulted a 62-year-old club employee for not giving him what he wanted the second he wanted it. ManRam asked for 16 tickets a few hours before a game at Houston, and got pissed when they didn’t magically appear that second. So he shoves a guy who should be collecting Social Security to the ground.
Fuck him, fuck Boston, and a reluctant Fuck You to the Dodgers for picking him up. I love the Dodgers too, but damn, this would be like the Ravens signing Leonard Little, really hard to defend.

Well
Manny is 36 and didn’t want to be there. Hansen and Moss are good prospects but definitely replaceable (with how well the Sox scout and draft, and put money into their draft)
Money is not an issue for them either.
Jason Bay will put up comparable numbers, better defense and is 28. This lets the Sox continue without skipping a beat IMO. They can find plenty more B+ and C+ prospects.

look at this fuckin quote from Gammons
Anyone who was watching John Lackey’s run at a no-hitter continued in the seventh inning Wednesday when Ramirez jogged to first in 5.7 seconds realizes that he is one of those rare, gifted athletes who cares nothing about winning, about the integrity of the game or his teammates. He can hit.

C'mon, Manny's been dogging it
at times of his choosing since the incident with the traveling secretary when he got fined. You can’t say credibly that he hasn’t. I’m not saying he doesn’t care about his teammates – we have no way of knowing that. But the first two? There’s a case to be made that Gammons is right.

Gammons also said
that acquiring Bay was the only way the Sox make the playoffs this year.
You read that right: acquiring a younger, slightly less productive player while giving up 3 prospects was the ONLY way that Boston makes the playoffs this year.
Gammons is such a girl when it comes to this team. I could have predicted that whatever Boston did with Manny would be the “right thing” by Gammons, no matter what it was.

Yeah, it does. If you’re not giving your best effort, you’re hurting your team’s chances to win.

Maybe if they win the Series they’ll vote for Manny to get a ring. You know, just to show how big-hearted and appreciative they are.
Or maybe they’ll vote to send him one to stick up his ass. The way this one spilled out, I figure the latter is more likely. Also, they can only win with Jason Bay.
All other thoughts aside, I have to say this is the season where Manny bought a little too far into being Manny, maybe. Keeping it real went wrong.

I’m not defending Manny. The guy is a goofball, and the stunts he has pulled would infuriate me if I employed him.
However, Gammons comes across as the underhanded red sox front office spokesman. It’s as if he’s been charged with dumping the dirt on Manny so they can remain above the fray.
Evidently Manny hasn’t cared about the “integrity of the game” for years. He takes off when he’s so inclined with mysterious ailments of various sorts. Now I am to understand that Gammons has gotten into Manny’s mind and can tell us he cares nothing about winning.
This is the same Gammons who was all atwitter in the pre-season about Manny the maniacal workout warrior (or some such stupid quote) who was now happy to be in Boston.
I guess Gammons will maintain his integrity and respect for the game and won’t vote for Manny for the HOF because of his character issues and the fact that he flaunts the game’s integrity.
by drj on Aug 1, 2008 8:34 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
that's how I read it, too
Like Gammons was so butthurt that Manny was tired of the situation in Boston (his own doing, partially his doing, or nothing to do with his doing aside) that he lashed out at him like a child might, except instead of, “What a dick!!” he said that Manny Ramirez doesn’t care about anything at all and he’s just a brain-dead mercenary who takes the integrity of this great, needle-and-greenies-filled sport and wipes his ass with it.

Two interesting things I heard from Buster Olney on XM Radio.
1) Theo had a meeting with the vets on the team and they wanted him off the team.
2) When Manny’s knee came up lame for the Yankees series, they sent him to the hospital. When he arrived at the hospital, his lame knee switched right before the MRI.

I'll defend Manny for one moment
He was ABSOLUTELY right in the beef with Youk.
Youk has taken to looking like an absolute shithead after a strikeout or a badly timed groundout – screaming, throwing his helmet, throwing crap in the dugout. And apparently Manny called him on it – you’re making us look stupid and immature – and Youk took exception and decided squaring up on Manny was the right thing to do. Bad decision.
