Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world, and you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. "Mankind" -- that word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests.
Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom. Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution. But from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist.
And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared, in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight!" We're going to live on! We're going to survive!
Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!

I guess everything I ever wanted to know
about why Wins are a useless measure of a pitcher’s performance is encapsulated in today’s starters.
Guthrie has a better BAA (by a lot), a better ERA (by a lot), a better WHIP, more Ks, fewer walks, fewer HR allowed, and all of that in more innings pitched than Padilla. Yet Padilla is 10-4 and Guts is 4-7.
Wow.

"Aubrey Huff - can you feel the sizzle!!!???"
I can’t believe that was actually said.
Can you feel the sizzle!?
didn't ... um .... SIDNEY PONSON ... pitch for texas?

Yes, I should say that, which, I should say that.
Wieters hit his first homer in Double-A last night
And Reimhold hit two.
These are the moments that make me giddy.
Also, from Roch...
Rocky Cherry and Esteban Yan combined for five scoreless innings. Salazar has a 14-game hitting streak.

Alright, guys, last night was a disappointment...
So, what you need to do this afternoon is go out there, and lay the beating of a lifetime on these pricks.
No, really, that’s it.
Don't forget
and give up at least ONE less run they you score.
That’s kinda important, too.

or, to parse it a different way,
make it a command and change one word:
give up one less run; then, you score.
you know, they’d start the first without allowing a run, and then they’d plate some.
GO O's!
Off to a family 7/4 BBQ, so keep the faith, guys.

Any chance for a clean save tonight?
These guys just performed pretty well against the Yankees- after our performance against the Nats and Royals I hope the relief pitching can hold up! This would be one hell of a 4th of July present; I’d like to see us play them like we played the Cubs. Any chance Sherrill gets ‘em three-up three-down for a save?
Did y’all see Sherrill’s comments in SI? They asked him who he would want to play him in a movie, and he went with Denzel Washington. Odd choice, but it WOULD be awesome to be played by Denzel…

best of luck to y'all, too

screw 'em
if they wanna post stuff like this then theres no reason to be a good sport.
besides, we may have sucked for the past 10 years, but they havent finished better then next to lastin the past 8. and, oh yea, have never won a WS (although they did win 1 playoff game once…)
ps – while the graphic pissed me off, its pretty sweet. well done, whoever made it…

take another angle, man...

Brian Bob is sick?
But man, that was a nice stop by Freddy, too bad that Kinsler is a little bit fast.
I love that Dave chose essentially the worst possible choice for leadoff man, too.

figured he'd use AJ
Since he did that earlier this season in that double header at Texas when Brian got a game off.

that’s going to be eye-searing…the Brewers look ok with them, as well, as they went with their navy alts.
I like Josh Hamilton and all, but I’ve never understood “he got caught up with the wrong crowd.” He was PART OF that crowd.

Again, I REALLY like Hamilton. For one thing he’s a hell of a ballplayer, and for another thing he has overcome a lot to get where he is today. Lots of guys never would’ve soldiered past all that stuff.

absolutely
But his recent trends and his age don’t indicate he’ll do this again next year, either.
"Yesterday I was lying, today I am telling the truth." -- Bob Arum
hmm. i don't know about that.
he’s right on his career production at the moment.
he takes a lot of crap for last year … ok …. but a lot of players have off years after a big move.

He’s above his career average production right now. He’s having his first really good season since 2004. He’s 31 years old. He’s not going to get younger. You sell high on this dude.

you see, i personally don’t care how many guns he owns or if he shoots defenseless animals or even, as he claims, if he waves his pistol at drifters in gas station parking lots.
however, he needed to recognize that baltimore has a SERIOUS FIREARM PROBLEM before popping to the sun earlier this year. it’s different in the city.

I think the firearm problem
Isn’t with law abiding citizens who follow the proper protocol to obtain a gun they have the right to own.
I hate guns myself, I respect people’s right to have and use them responsibly if they choose and if they obtain the the correct way.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

But even at the beginning of the game before it started there were not too many people in the stands.

in fairness...
gary does have a law degree from georgetown and is admitted to practice in front of he supreme court, so it’s not completely ridiculous to hear him reflect on the framers and the declartion of indpendence.

Hey,I couldn't be more for lessons-- I'm a teacher! The Yikes was of surprise.
Though the Will column would’ve been a nice addendum, pointing out as it does that what actually happened on the 4th of July, 1776, is in some doubt.
Anyway, rock on, Gary! How about a quiz during the 7th inning stretch?

John Adams: Happy July 2nd!
The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epocha in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations, as the great Anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp, shews, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of the continent to the other, from this time forward forever.

First of all.
1. Michael Young is not among the elite hitters in baseball.
2. That’s David Murphy. Not Donnie Murphy. And he’s not either.

Please tell me why you didn’t bring JJ in in the 7TH instead of having Bukwickch come in?
if you have him on the roster
you play him. And 8-2 is the time to do it. Unfortunately he sucks THAT MUCH.
"Yesterday I was lying, today I am telling the truth." -- Bob Arum
no
It’s Major League Baseball where they’re being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars at the minimum. If he’s on the roster, he has to play sometime and earn his keep. You don’t put a guy into one of the 25 spots you have and let them totally rot. 8-2 was the right time to pitch Bukvich. He’s just really fucking bad and shouldn’t be on the roster to begin with.
"Yesterday I was lying, today I am telling the truth." -- Bob Arum
But
It’s not like the Rangers aren’t one of the best hitting teams in the AL. The goal is to win the game, and Bukvich just doesn’t help that.
right, but...
bringing in your best reliever in a low leverage situation would be foolish.
foghat goes with everything--birdman, 5/16/08
yup,
which drove me crazy about Trembley. There would be a blow out game and he would bring in one of our good relievers. For example, Against the Cubs last week, huge lead, he brings in Bradford for 2 innings instead of Bukvich. I don’t like Bukvich, but at least Dave brought him in at the right time for a change.
Wolf, wolf, wolf.
he does...
but preserving guthrie’s stats is not his priority.
foghat goes with everything--birdman, 5/16/08
we've been through this with Aquino, and McCrory
we don’t exactly have a deep list of players to bring up for our 12th/13th pitcher. They keep experiementing with these crapsacks in the hopes that they strike gold. Some of the experiements work (Johnson, Cormier), and some of them are disasters. However, he should be in Norfolk tomorrow. His audition should be over.
Dave owns Fruit of the Loom stock. Think of all the underwear that was permanently soiled thx to Bukvich.
