bri-bobs walk-up song?
so i just got back from a 2 day visit to bmore and a couple losses at the hands of the rangers, and something had me wierded out all weekend. anyone know what song brob walks up to? cause, sorry to say, its a bit... womanly. at first i thought it was kevbo pullin a prank, but both days, every time he came up, there it was. very lame. any ideas on what it is and more importantly WHY he likes it?

This song has created more chatter than the new Madonna album.
To sum up:
1. It’s a horrible song.
2. It sucks.
3. Brian Roberts likes it because he probably likes really shitty music.
It’s by some crappy band from Texas, which I learned yesterday.

Bri's taste in music
It is a terrible song, but I don’t know if his taste is all that bad. At the very least, it’s eclectic. Didn’t he walk up to Biggie last year?

But I think I heard that someone else picked it out for him.

It is really, truly godawful
It’s been his AB music for well over a month, and it is not good at all. I personally like Kevin’s choice of walking out to Godsmack best out of the team.

A lot of us are music fans
but I doubt these players have time to go on Last FM or on blogs or read Spin or whatever so they all probably like shitty music. I want to critique every shitty song I hear players walk up to, but these guys really don’t have a clue anyway.
Plus, this song seems to be working for B-Rob.
Quick fact: Barry Zito is one of the few players I know that likes what some of us would consider “good” music, as he is a fan of NOFX and a number of Bay Area punk bands. Also, Scott Radinsky, former pitcher, used to play in Epitaph Records bands Pulley and Ten Foot Pole.

NOFX just never did it for me
I was into the Epitaph/Fat Wreck/etc. stuff when I was 13-18 mostly, but NOFX and Bad Religion in particular did not connect with me. Although I legitimately dislike Bad Religion, while NOFX just gives me gas. But I suppose it’s better that kids listen to that and maybe approach thinking (though most of them just drink beer and get weird haircuts) than listen to 311 or something.

I find political music to be annoying most of the time
Plus I don’t think the lyrics have been all that different. But as far as political punk goes, I’ll take BR over Anti-Flag, who continually play to the lowest common denominator and think they’re non-conformists because they have mohawks or whatever. I’m SMOKING, nyeeeh. FUCK THE GOVERNMENT

Sorry, I love Tom Morello's playing
saw them live on their first tour, opening for House of Pain, and was mesmerized – all those sounds out of almost zero equipment (wah, distortion box, amp head, that’s it) – like he was the anti-Edge or something.. Thankfully, HoP didn’t play. Great night all around.

Total studio creation
Stick an acoustic in his hands, and he becomes rather pedestrian. Think of every U2 rocker you like. I Will Follow. Streets Have No Name. Any one you want. Now, take away his chorus pedal, flange pedal, reverb and ESPECIALLY his digital delay pedal, and you ain’t got much left.

this was my point...
though an unfair one. it still takes skill to manipulate delay the way he does, as it’s easy to bust on srv/hendrix impersonators, though using a wah wah like that is difficult.
i dunno. playing acoustic well isn’t easy either, similary doing stuff on electric coming from playing electric is not necessarily a seamless process.

he’s the guitar equivilent of Hilary Duff – sure, there’s SOME talent there (unlike Britney), but without the studio tricks, they become less awesome quickly.

I'm getting to the bottom of this...
Hello. My name is Todd Helsdon. Brian Roberts has changed his AB music fairly recently. Those of us who religiously follow the Birds are wondering WHAT exactly he changed it to, and more importantly, WHY?
Thank you,

Dear Mr. Helsdon,Thank you for your interest in the Orioles.
A few years ago Brian gave us a CD with a song on it that he wanted to use. We played it all the time until about 3 years ago he switched to “Hypnotize.” Just recently, he asked if he could switch back. We unfortunately do not know the name of the song or the artist and don’t believe he had a specific reason why he wanted to switch back to the old song.
Sincerely,

Thanks!
Thanks for sharing that, dayzd. The legal eagle in me is wondering, however, if the O’s pay royalties to the publishing companies for the songs they use in AB walkups. My understanding is that the team is required to pay, since it’s a public performance of a tune, so someone must know what the song is, if the artist is a member of BMI/ASCAP, Harry Fox, etc.

i don't think that's correct...
my understanding is, sort of like sampling, you can play a certain amount of a song (not sure it’s percentage or actual seconds) w/o triggering the requirement to pay royalties. if you think about it (or i do) try to count out the seconds in a walk up.

Fair Use
You’re probably thinking of the concept of “fair use” which only applies to non-commercial use. The Orioles using the music for ABs is commercial (not educational, for news purposes, critique, etc.), so I think they owe royalties. If a hip hop artist samples even a hi-hat from another song, technically they owe royalties because it’s for commercial use.

de minimis
the de minimis defense has been used successfully in instances where the party seeking protection would profit from the use, but the more i think about it, the more i think it’s highly unlikely that the o’s don’t pay the performing rights societies.

Story
I read a good story (I think it was in the MSBA magazine) about royalties for public performance with regard to figure skating. Off the top of my head I forget the facts, but recall the skating organization and the broadcasting network (if televised) having to pay royalties. Granted, that’s for playing the WHOLE SONG, but it’s an example of public performance requiring royalties.
An example that would be somewhat analogous would be a skating routine to a medley using 10-15 second snippets (probably about what is played for the walkup).
Here’s the next one: How much does John Denver’s estate get for 81 performances of “Thank God I’m A Country Boy” at O’s games? There’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Hey, I answered my own question!
after seeing no one else knew as well, i decided to spend 3 minuites with google and, sure enough, there it was.
Its called “We All Make Mistakes” by Submersed, a now defunct band out of texas with strong christian overtones. apparently bri-bob’s a hardcore christian (as a google on christian mlb’ers came up with a full page dedicated to him), which i never knew.
popular opinion seems to be that he picked this song because of the whole ‘roids thing, but who knows…
if you want the song and cant find it, lemme know. i’ll send it.
oh, and b-robs music before hypnotize was shake it fast, not the same song, as per espn (2004)

According to Heather
from the O’s, he used to use the same song and “switch back” to it recently. I’m not sure who to believe… I mean, aside from the fact the O’s own PR didn’t know the song to which Brian Bob walks up to.
