The Orioles uncertain future could cost me $165
Seriously. Out of all players on this team, which one is gonna be here the longest, while at the same time, being a good player and also being a hell of a good person to boot?
I ask, because for the first time in my life, I'm gonna buy an authentic jersey to wear for games. Got my jersey in my cart but I had to stop when we got to the "Choose Player" part. I'm not the guy that can afford to buy a jersey every year. Hell, I can't afford to go to games, really, but the Orioles have made me do it this year.
I would get Brian Roberts because he is definitely our best player and I like his attitude. But I can't shell out the money if he's not going to be on the team. He still has a good 5 years left in him, but how many of those will be with the O's?
I'm starting to think the only player that would make sense would be Adam Jones. But if that is the case, I'm going to have to wait on that for a little while, because I haven't seen him long enough, haven't heard enough interviews to decide if I like the person as a person and not just a player.
So what does everyone think? Which player is worth my $165 comittment?

Roberts
I feel as though even if he isn’t an Oriole, you could still wear that jersey with pride because of his good times in Baltimore.

Nicky M.
He’s good, seems to have a good head on his shoulders and I don’t think he’ll be going ANYWHERE for a long while.

That's what I went with
He’s a lock for at least 3 more years.

Buy an old Tejada authentic
on ebay for like $40, remove the TEJADA and take it to Pro-Am Sportswear in Lutherville to get Jones put on the back. You’ll end up with an authentic Adam Jones jersey for half the price.
I did that with a Sosa jersey and now I have a Markakis (the Sosa jersey was $4.98 at Dick’s, 2 seasons ago, though… Haven’t been able to find Tejada jerseys anywhere but on ebay).

How could I forget to mention Markakis?
Yeah Markakis is definitely up there with Jones… I was at the game where he hit 3 HRs, the game where people started paying attention to him.
I don’t know, but I like Jones more than Markakis this year, and I think I’d perfer to wear Jones over him.
Redrummer, I would agree with that if at least Roberts was guarunteed to at least remain here until 2008.
You know what….I think I’mma wait for the deadline to get a jersey.
CStone, that’s some mighty fine advice right there.

Hold on to it for a few more weeks
We might get him back for Ramon Hernandez, Freddie Bynum and Greg Aquino. :)

I'd go with AJ or Nick too
Apparently Adam is a great guy with very few character flaws, and Nick isn’t going anywhere as was mentioned above. If you don’t choose either of those two then go for Guthrie, I’m sold on him as a pitcher and I don’t think there are many selfish/arrogant missionaries.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

The only character flaw AJ has
that I can see is a tendency to chase really bad curveballs. And even that is improving. Dude’s up to almost .280 now.

Missionary
Guthrie is a missionary? Is he taking a sabbatical to proselytize in the Third World? I know he rides his bike to work, but I didn’t expect he would ride it to Southeast Asia.

Not for nothing, but
why would a player have to be selfish or arrogant or have character flaws to go to a new team?
by Awesome Mike Awesome on Jul 7, 2008 9:39 PM EDT 0 recs
I assume your referring to
which one is gonna be here the longest, while at the same time, being a good player and also being a hell of a good person to boot?
If that’s the case I think he just meant that he didn’t want to throw down $165.00 in support of someone Huffesque and his horseshit comment OR someone who isn’t going to be around long. Not that someone would HAVE to have a major character flaw to go to a new.

Real Simple Solution
Just buy an authentic blank jersey. There is no risk unless the home white uni’s change drastically which hasn’t happened in awhile.
by PWubbs on Jul 8, 2008 10:02 AM EDT 0 recs
If in fact they are putting the "Baltimore" back on the homers
i’d just wait. also, you cant go wrong getting the jersey of one of your faves from when you were growing up. you cant get one pre-made, but there’s a guy who sells authentic o’s letter/number kits on ebay for 18 bucks with any name and number you’d like. in fact, i’m making a chris hoiles jersey within the month.

yeah...
when you’re home, you know where you’re from. And when another teams comes to play they probably know too. It’s when you go a long road trip you might forget where your home is. :)

Yeah, Baltimore is going on the Road Jerseys
Not the home ones. It makes a hell of a lot of sense. I can’t think of too many teams who don’t follow that pattern, but in fact I know that there is at least ONE other team. I just couldn’t tell you…
Thanks for the advice, all. I’m gonna wait until the deadline, first of all, and I’ll probably go to a few more games this year, rendering Supreme Judgements on the virtues of Adam Jones versus Markakis.

I'm curious
Of those who have jerseys, how often to you wear them?
Besides having an aversion to wearing some other guy’s name on my back, I can think of a lot of other ways I’d prefer to spend $200 or so.
by drj on Jul 8, 2008 1:14 PM EDT 0 recs
almost never
then again, i only buy replicas, and at that i only own one that came lettered/numbered (mr kickass). the other ones i get are sosa/tejada castoffs that my loverly GF converts to new jerseys for me. 20 bucks on ebay for a jersey plus 18 for a name number kit = jersey for under 40 bucks.
i do own 2 authentics, though. 1 mussina and 1 albert belle (which i bought for 40 bucks and then got autographed. its my livingroom centerpiece)

Old Post
But I wanted to refresh it a bit, because my wife just bought me a BP jersey with my name and birth year on it. I understand many (MOST) people are outraged by the idea of wearing a jersey with their own name on it unless they play for the team, but I wanted it, and I don’t care.
I have a lot of reasons. The major two are that I didn’t want to blow upwards of $100-200 for a player’s jersey who might get traded, and I have some issues with wearing someone else’s name on my back when I’m not romantically involved with them.
The wife picked out the BP jersey because she knows the road jerseys are changing next year and she didn’t want to buy white because I’m a slob who eats like the Swedish Chef. But she loves me anyway, slobbiness and nerdy self-named jerseys combined. It was unintentional, but I think the BP was a good choice because it’s not game-worn. Plus, the number isn’t associated with any famous player, so it’s not like I’m wearing a jersey with my last name and 33 on the back.
So come on, lambaste me!
