wieters: at it again

i don't know if anyone else has been following wieters super-close since his promotion to bowie, but in the event you haven't, let me catch you up:

he started off so-so w/ only 3 hits in his first four games and a handful of walks.  no extra base hits.  since then, however, he's gone on a bit of a tear.  in fact, after 10 games his obp and slg are now basically in line (if not a bit better) than his flrederick numbers.  only 10 games, i know, but how can you not be encouraged?

in other news, reimold is going on one of his patented hot streaks.  he has two multi-homer games in his last 10 and his season total now stands at 15.  that goes a long w/ a very good .879 ops.

another guy i've been watching is jerome hoes.  he was just drafted from st. john's college high school about a mile away from me and is playing in the gulf coast league.  his average and slugging are both miserable, but he's worked an impressive 10 walks for a .380 obp.

anyone on your mind?

prospects

Im hoping Wieters will be able to take over the full-time backstop duties by mid season next year. As for Reimold, if he stays healthy and continues to rake, I’m thinking he could do one of those AA to the Majors jumps this season and get a lot of MLB experience if/when a spot opens up due to Millar/Huff/Payton getting traded.

How about...

Huff, Millar AND Payton getting traded?

Wieters will be treated like Bruce or Longoria was this year

Brought up a month into the season in order to push his service clock back a year. Longoria was brought up sooner than planned b/c of an injury, but you get the idea.

Longoria is ridic

so glad I picked him up for one of my fantasy leagues. He should be starting the ASG.

Luis Montanez

The #3 overall pick in 2000 by the Chicago Cubs, we signed him to a minor league deal in 2006. He is 26 years old and plays CF. He is batting .311 with 18 home runs (.311/.366/.542). I know we dont have room for him right now but if huff or payton were to go then he might be a good replacement candidate (his numbers trump Reimold’s at the moment actually).

And David Hernandez deserves mention. Sickels did a write-up on him a week or so ago. You can read that here:
http://www.minorleagueball.com/2008/6/24/557787/prospect-update-david-hern

Or for the abbreviated version, he was upgraded to a B prospect by sickels but walks too many guys. 2.63 ERA 100K in 89 IP but 43 BB so far in AA Bowie.

Montanez and Wieters

Saw Montanez play against Reading a few weeks ago, he hit a rocket home run, then struck out on three pitches his next at-bat. He was pretty inconsistent for a player his age still in AA. There is a reason the Cubs just gave up on him.

Wieters’ production at AA has been encouraging, it seems like he will be able to come up next year and contribute in a Ryan Braun/Troy Tulowitzki type-way ( his minor-league numbers right now are better than either of those two put up at any level).

Two guys I’m keeping an eye on:

David Hernandez, currently at Bowie, has 100 strikeouts in 89 innings and could help our bullpen right now.

Elvin Polanco, currently hitting .365/.415/.608 is another guy I’m watching. I’d like to see him get some time in Aberdeen later this season. He’s already 21, making him relatively old to his competition.

by nittany lion on Jul 7, 2008 10:39 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yes, polanco...

there a few guys at low a and rookie league that i’d think will move before the season ends. i also like this shortstop jed stephen at aberdeen. i think he was drafted from ohio state last year…maybe a little old for aberdeen and i know he didn’t do too well closing out the year at frederick, but i’m still intrigued.

really, the entire starting rotation at bowie is pretty interesting.

i think a couple of the pitchers that just got drafted, allen and zagone, have some decent looking peripherals so far.

Anyone seen Tillman lately?

I think I need to get over to Bowie sometime again this summer to see this kid pitch (in addition to seeing Wieters).

Blew me away with 6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER last time I went.

Montanez is trash. Wieters will probably spend the rest of the year at Bowie and not make the AA jump, instead going to AAA until at least all star break, although I could be wrong as he is going to kill AA too. Matusz will probably be number one pitcher next year automatically. Reimold is never going to amount to anything at all. Tillman and Arrieta are for real, I’m not sold on Hernandez. Patton will probably come back and be right behid Tillman in our system.

Honestly we need to delve into what the Brewers have going at AA, look up that roster and tell me what you think.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

by Baltimo on Jul 7, 2008 1:06 PM EDT   0 recs

Agreed on the Brewers

We fit well as trade partners, they need some bullpen help and a better 2b. If we could get Rickie Weeks and Alicides Escobar for Roberts I would be all for that. Although I dont know if they will part with Escobar.

I wouldn’t call Montanez trash with how well he has hit. He isn’t a top prospect for sure but if he got some AB’s in the major leagues I think he could be a decent player.

by Reddrummer9187 on Jul 7, 2008 1:21 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Brewers

Word is that the Brewers want to trade Hardy to promote Escobar. Dont think they will want Roberts for Weeks.

Montanez isnt trash, but only because he helps keep our Minor League teams competitive. He could possibly be a reserve outfielder. He would have the potential to go on hot streaks but he is too easy for pitchers to figure out. I think he would end up being like Luis Terrero, able to produce at times, but not somebody you want to rely on, even as a reserve.

However, his ability to help our minor league teams win is underrated. Guys like Wieters get promoted and dont help teams make playoff runs, but Montanez could help Bowie win some ball games and maintain the fan base. My extended family is from Rochester, and people up there are bitter toward the Orioles because the Red Wings were so bad at the end there. This franchise needs as much good will as it can get, especially in markets like Bowie and Frederick where those fans could support the major league team as well.

Could the O's get Hardy?

He’s young and good, right? I wouldn’t mind him at SS.

re

I wouldnt deal Roberts for Hardy straight up at this point, but he looks like a very solid player. Hardy has shown flashes of star potential the past two seasons. If he manages to hit for an entire year, hes going to be a white miguel tejada (with more walks and less BA).

by UMterp08 on Jul 7, 2008 1:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I love Hardy

proven and young. We may have to give up a lot.

He's not going anywhere for now

I can’t see a team trading away a very good starting SS in the middle of a pennant race.

If the Brewers really like Escobar that much, they may make Hardy available in the offseason.

by dkdc on Jul 7, 2008 2:27 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No rush

I have no idea if the O’s could get Hardy, or if they’d be willing to give up what it would take, but I certainly don’t see why they couldn’t wait until the off season to trade for him if it is possible.

here is what ken rosenthal would try and do

George Sherill and Brian Roberts for JJ Hardy and Rickie Weeks.

Unrealistic

The strength for the Os is their bullpen. If they can trade Sherill, Bradford, and Walker and try to get rid of Huff as he continues his tear, I wouldn’t be surprised if they got someone close to Escobar and some parts. But that’s the problem, really. The Brewers aren’t going to just give up Escobar for Roberts or Sherill.

i think you'll be seeing him before too long...

he tore the shit out of either the gulf coast league or bluefield after he signed last summer. he’s sporting a pretty silly obp so far.

Glasses like that...

and he’s NOT a pitcher? Will probably skip Delmarva, too. We barely get ANY of the good ones these days….

Hold your hosrses

Went to Prince George’s stadium last night. Three K’s and a single.

The home plate ump was being bullshit though on balls and strikes. Our pitcher got ejected….
