The injustice of it all: Orioles vs. Dodgers
I have a friend who is a Dodgers fan. We're not close friends. She lives in California and we haven't kept in close touch since college, but we email sometimes, usually about baseball. When Manny got traded to the Dodgers I emailed her to see what she thought, and part of her response was frustration about Joe Torre playing Andruw Jones and Juan Pierre over Andre Ethier who is not only a better player, but younger and more of a part of the future than either of those guys. Totally understandable. I replied to her, commiserating about what a bad decision it is and gave my own opinion on the Dodgers.
This is the beginning of her next reply:
Are you following my team now? Sounds like you know a lot about the situation. Maybe an alternative to your poor Orioles? I see they are in last place again. :(
It made me so mad! I mean, I know the Orioles aren't good. I'm no idiot. They have got a long way to go to be competitive, but to get that response from a freaking Dodgers fan? It just got to me. For one thing, the Dodger's record is 58-59 and the Orioles record is 56-60. But the Dodgers are only 1.5 games out of first place and the Orioles are 14.5 games out.
I wrote back to her as nicely as I could about the positive progress that the Orioles are making, and pointed out how the O's and Dodgers have very similar records, despite the fact that the O's have to play the Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, and other AL teams while the Dodgers play the Padres and Giants a million times a year. I ended it with saying that if the Orioles were in the NL West I'd guess that they'd probably be fighting for a playoff spot just like the Dodgers.
Don't get me wrong. I don't begrudge my friend the joy she gets in watching a team that is competitive in its division. And I'm not normally one of those folks who is all, "Woe is me! My team plays in the AL East! It's not fair!" It's just this one time, and that one comment got under my skin big time. To have a Dodgers fan pity me for following a lousy team just seems so very rich.

Casual hometown/single team fan (her) vs. baseball fan (you)
Lot of people don’t care about the sport outside of their team of choice. Me? I watch the postseason no matter who is playing (for the most part – you’ll never catch me watching another NY subway series, though). Sounds like your friend turns off the tv after the Dodgers are eliminated.
In addition to not caring about the rest of baseball, she’s also on the West Coast, and I don’t think they talk about the Orioles too much over there. Probably only exposure to the Orioles is you and ESPN, which usually doesn’t have much nice to say about the Orioles anyway.
You should give her an XM gift sub and tell her that if she wants to continue talking to you, she has to listen to The Show with Dibs and Kennedy. I know you already listen to it, so you know that not only do they try to talk about the entire league and give credit where credit is due, they also love Dave Trembley.
Or you could just delete her email address.

Love XM
It has truly made me a better baseball fan.
All I know is if she looks at the standings to see that the O’s are in last, she just has to pan her eyes over an eighth of an inch to see how many wins they have, which is very close to the Dodgers.

XM Radio Channel 175
is pretty damn awesome. Love it. I pretty much bought XM Radio for that channel and POTUS 08. I can’t say I’m a big fan of Dibs and Ken, but I do like Sickels’ Down on the Farm show and all the interviews they do in general.
The NL West was suppose to be an up and coming division with the all young talent in AZ, LA, and CO. Guess things can turn around still. And I hardly notice whenever people make fun of the Orioles anymore. Dodgers fans, Yankee fans, Pirates fans, Newark Bears fans, it’s coming from all angles these days. I still curse that 30-3 game to this day. Even my dad, who doesn’t even follow baseball, called me to inform that the O’s lost 30-3 and it was one of the worst losses blah, blah, blah.

Dibs and Kennedy are awesome
Today Kennedy was flying solo, because Dibs is out for an undisclosed reason (I’m guessing he beat up his ex-wife), and he had the Mets-Pirates tv feed playing and he was analyzing over top of it. It was awesome to hear him comment and predict strategy, and then listen to his prediction come true.
He also threw one of the Mets commentators under the bus when the commentator said Steven Pearce of the Pirates was an “inexperienced hitter” for not swining at a 3-1 ball that was “right down the middle.” The ball was, according to Kennedy, at the knees and a good pitchers pitch, one thrown to force hitters to ground out. The 3-2 pitch was left up over the plate, and Pearce knocked a two-run single to put the Pirates ahead 7-5. Kennedy made sure to let everyone know that Pearce had a great at-bat and the Mets announcer didn’t know what he was talking about.

What do you think of Duquette?
I find myself pleasently surprised whenever he fills in for someone. Say what you want about the man’s front office skills, he knows the job and he knows the ins and outs and I always enjoy him. On July 31st he and Holden did an extended Baseball This AM that I got to listen to on my four hour drive to NJ and it was outstanding. He also has a very radio friendly voice.
I love Dibs and Kennedy, although I don’t always agree with their stances on certain things and I think Kennedy is a bit of a name dropper. But you can’t beat their knowledge.

I like him as well
Yeah, the special trade-deadline BBTM was great, and you’re right about his voice – he’s got a natural speaking voice that really works on the radio, as well as a casual style of speaking that still sounds like he knows what he’s talking about.
I pretty much like everyone on the channel except for Grant Paulson (sp?) of Minors and Majors. Unlike Duquette, Paulson sounds like a total nerd and it’s impossible for me to take him seriously, or even be interested in anything he has to say. I’m not saying that he doesn’t know his shit, but I’ve never actually cared to listen and find out.
Also – and I might get flamed for this – I dislike Ripken Baseball. I dislike it a lot. I think Cal and Billy are boring and don’t really offer any insight or analysis. Still love them both, but hate their show.

I don't mind Grant Paulson
The only guy I really can’t stand is Chris Russell(?) At least I think that’s his name. He’s a fill in I believe. He grates and he’s a bit too fanboy for my tastes.
I’ve only listened to Ripken Baseball a couple of times, don’t really have an opinion. I get bored out of my skull when coaches of 12 year olds call in to talk about development with them, but that is their niche so whatever.

Your'e right about Ripken Baseball
Its boring as hell. They don’t say anything much of substance. I really enjoy Charley Steiner’s show. Why doesn’t more sports coverage get this: talk to beat writers for your opinions, not national columnists. They know what the hell they’re talking about. BEAT WRITERS, BEAT WRITERS!
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I don’t catch them very often but Cal isn’t a good interviewer. King of leading questions. He’s basically states an opinion in his question and then looks for the interviewee to confirm it.

To be fair to Kennedy
He gives equal time to all of his past organizations. Texas, LAD, Boston, Montreal, and Baltimore (as a minor leaguer). But boy does he love him some Roger Clemens. You can’t shut that guy up about Roger Clemens.

The NL West is one of the worst divisions in history this year
And the NL still stinks in general.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see the O’s have a better record than the Dodgers if they played the same schedule.
Also, Ned Colletti is a dum-dum, and Joe Torre’s preference for veterans is hurting him more than it did with the Yanks (the Yanks usually had better veterans than the Dodgers do right now)

I was surprised
when I looked back at last year’s schedule on my office wall to see that on August 10th the O’s were 53-61 while they are only 56-60 this year. It just seems like to me this year’s team has been better. Maybe it’s just that they are moving in the right direction and that makes it easier to watch them. Of course last year’s team only won 19 games over the final two months so that could have something to do with it.

Meh
Dodgers: 58-59 in the weak NL West with a $118.5 M payroll, and a free Manny. They may make it to the playoffs but they won’t get far if they do. OPS+ of 88 = really weak offense that shouldn’t be, but is. ERA+ of 121 is the only thing to be jealous of. Juan Pierre. Revolving door at SS.
Orioles: 56-60 with a $67M payroll (including Gibbons and Trax). 2-3 actual MLB level starting pitchers and a revolving door at SS. 104 OPS+ 91 ERA+

Oh their pitching is way better, no doubt
For one thing, we really only have 3/5 of a starting rotation, and two of those are Danny Cabrera and Garrett Olson. The Dodgers pitching is much better than the O’s. But it’s not even about that.

She does have a point
I mean, the Orioles are on their way to, what, their 11th losing season in a row, whereas the Dodgers have at least been competitive most of those years.
Sure, the future looks less dire than it usually does, and yeah, they play in a tougher division. But if a frog had wings, it wouldn’t bump its butt on the ground a-hoppin’. Until the O’s actually deliver something better than 4th place (looks like 5th place this year), we aren’t really in a position to complain when fans of other teams look at us with pity.
The Orioles suck, and unfortunately that has yet to change. Sorry if I sound bitter about it, but I was at yesterday’s game….

Obviously the Dodgers aren’t a pathetic team. If the question were, “Which team is more pathetic?” The O’s would win every time. It’s just the past couple years, despite being in contention, the Dodgers have not been a great team. They’ve been a team that lucked into a weak division. That’s all. They’d get eaten alive in the AL East (or any AL division probably). It’s not so much her acknowledgment that the O’s aren’t good, it’s that she says “your poor Orioles. I see they’re in last place” and then writes an entire rest of the email about the Dodgers and their chances. Blargh.

It's also the choice of the word "poor"
That’s so patronizing. Like she’s patting your shoulder and saying, “there, there.”
It doesn’t take a genius to realize that the Orioles are very different this year from the past several, and that they are moving in the right direction. “Poor Orioles” might make sense if we were on track to lose 100 games, but right now (surprisingly) we’re projected to crush last year’s season win total, and that’s with the subtraction of our best pitcher and best hitter. And of course, our farm system is about 200% better as a result of those trades.
Bottom line, neither team is going to win the WS this year, and the Dodgers, IF they make the playoffs, will do so despite Torre, not because of him. And they won’t last past the first round.
Me? I’d say “poor Dodgers.” Their ballpark sucks, their fan base is of the 3rd-7th inning variety. LA is, first and foremost, a basketball town, and despite the fact that I’m moving to a place where I can literally walk to Dodgers stadium, I will most likely catch more Angels games during my time in LA.

I like Dodgers Stadium, quite a bit actually.
But it’s a pretty chill place fan wise unless the Giants are in town. Angels fans are pretty enthusiastic but the rally monkey annoys the hell out of me and they do the wave entirely too much.
I will most likely catch more Angels games during my time in LA.

With friends like this...
...who needs the Yankees?
I mean I hear she’s your friend and all, but frankly this person seems a little overly defensive about someone else in her conversation having knowledge of her baseball team. I mean, why react like that? You’re sitting around having a casual chat about the misguided Dodgers and she’s got to pull some sassy bullshit? It’s pretty lame.

Stacey: Tell your friend that it's a shame the Dodgers aren't where they should be.
They would dominate if they played in the other league—that’s the Japanese Central League, of course.
Holy crap, what kind of dolt is this woman? Has she looked at the interleague, all-star and WS results recently? Does she have a glimmer that she’s watching something that might be called AAA+ baseball , as she condescendingly talks about the “poor Orioles”?
