Adam Dunn Traded
http://baseballevolution.com/images/dunnh1.bmp
has reportedly been traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks for three players. There isn't a lot of information out there yet abou this one. I just saw the crawler on cbssportsline.
I'm positive this isn't 75 words long so I'm reaching.
If you knew the Orioles were going to pick up two guys off the FA list to be who would you rather have?
Ohh...that was 73 words long. I've got it now!!!

OK
Someone feel free to clean this up and re-post…but per mlbtraderumors, the deal is for two players to be named later and pitching prospect Dallas Buck. The $4M or so left on his salary will be split by the two teams.

Just a rental
He’ll still be a free agent.
But this does set a pretty ugly upper bound for Huff’s trade value.

Dunn is a two month rental
Huff will be available for all of 2009. Both are butchers with the glove. This trade shouldn’t set a precedent for Huff.

I’m not sure the extra year for Huff is a good thing. Which would you rather have: the obligation to pay Huff $8MM next year, or the right to offer Dunn arbitration and get two early round draft picks?
Dunn’s a better hitter than Aubrey, and he can play the OF (at least theoretically).
Dunn’s value isn’t directly comparable to Huff’s, but I have a hard time seeing how Aubrey could fetch more.

I'm not sure how much Huff can fetch,
probably not much as GMs may be see his 2008 season as a fluke. I’m not sure if GMs would rather have 1 year of Huff (plus arb picks) or 2 months of Dunn (plus arb picks). Dunn is certainly the better hitter given recent history but Huff is the better hitter now (Dunn OPS+ 131, Huff OPS+ 138, but of course this can change quickly). But the longer you can hold onto a player, the more trade value he has assuming the player has value as a reasonable salary. In any case, I’m just leary of using Dunn as a barometer into Huff’s trade because they’re not in comparable situations.

Huff vs Dunn
I’ll take Huff, at least in 2008. OPS are comparable, but Dunn has 10 more HR, and Huff has 20 more 2B. Dunn walks a lot more but Huff scores more, thanks in part to the 70 point difference in BA. RBI about equal.
Overall, I think Dunn might win as he’s a few years younger and is more consistently at the top of the charts in HR, BB, and K.
I say they are comparable, but Dunn might lose a lot of value in a pitcher friendly park, where Huff might not.
Curt never met a buttered roll he didn't like.

Ya think? Dunn’s OPS+ (park-adjusted) is 131 this year, 130 for his career. Huff’s is 138 this year, 116 career. Dunn is a better player. Huff’s having a great season.

Actually, maybe this will intensify the Yank’s effort to pick up Washburn. I’m sure he cleared waivers.
