Gameday Thread: O's (56-62) @ Indians (54-64)
Baltimore Orioles at Cleveland Indians, Aug 13, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
7:05 / MASN2 :: 76° :: Wind in from CF - 5 MPH :: Rain - 20%
Today's Starting Pitchers GS IP ERA WHIP BAA HR BB K W-L Jeremy Guthrie - RH 25 163.0 3.26 1.17 .238 18 44 102 9-8 Anthony Reyes - RH 1 (11) 21.0 3.86 1.29 .280 2 4 14 3-1
Anthony Reyes came over from St. Louis in a trade on July 26, and he'll get a chance to become a long-term part of the Cleveland rotation after falling out of favor in St. Louis. Maybe he could become like another guy that fell out of favor somewhere and was sent packing.
Imagine if the Indians had Guthrie last year with Sabathia and Carmona.
I'd really like to split this series. Or at least win one game. Here's our big chance!

Brutal.

I'm at work
2-0 Good Start
Who would have thought that Aubrey Huff would have 25 HR’s at this point in the season? That’s why I love this game.
Geaux Eaux's
Guts rocks. Pretty much the reason to tune in every fifth O's game.
On the other hand, I wish I’d been watching last night’s Sawx-Rangers game.

Oh no! Melmo bunted!
And even worse, he got on with a base hit.
This will likely give him ideas.
Look for more bunts from Melmo at the least opportune times.
BTW, why would someone who has been as hot as he is, with the power stroke at times, bunt?
SUch is the Zen like mystery of our man Melvin.
Trembles
I love listening to this guy shoot the shit. And I love hearing Buck Martinez regurgitate lines from his MASN blog post from earlier today.
2 on against guts? who's worried.
I’m not. More importantly, Guts ain’t.
I love Jeremy Guthrie
He soothes me.

not to mention a nice play.
very roberts-like.
nie throw - gotta admit. Went to the right place.

If only Melmo had decided to be plumber a instead of a baseball player.

yep - mlb tv...
I was still watching the replay of Payton fielding the ball off the wall when you called the next play.

Guthrie
How about scoring this guy some runs…. he should easill be in double digits in WINS
PLEASE -- JUST PLEASE THROW STRIKES.
the indians announcers
how about these guys saying that the speed gun must be wrong, bc Guthrie never hit 97 mph when he was with them.
Dammit Grady
PLEASE -- JUST PLEASE THROW STRIKES.
This just in: Commercialization has struck the Yerks.
Listening to the Moose game last night , I discovered that the team has sold the rights to its press box and, even better, New York Presbyterian is The Official Hospital of the New Yerk Yawkees. I guess they’re expecting a lot of bench-clearing brawls…
"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." Churchill,1942-- a rebuilding year.
Millar's smart...
Luke’s obviously out of shape and has a lousy body (overused O’s joke!) ... so after he exerted himself so much Millar recognizes that he could use a breather and went over to “talk to guthrie” – probably making fun of luke. THE LITTLE THINGS!
Man, Guts hit 97 again...
that’s some high level velocity…
how about these guys saying that the speed gun must be wrong, bc Guthrie never hit 97 mph when he was with them.
PLEASE -- JUST PLEASE THROW STRIKES.
Their reasoning is stupid...
but they might not be wrong. I don’t recall Guts hitting 97 all year. I mean, I definitely seen 95.. maybe 96 a couple times… any of you?
Adam Jones would've caught that
OK, not really, but Jones deserves a mention in every game thread even when he’s hurt.
I remember Dave Dellucci
I was kinda sad when we lost him in the expansion draft.
I was also eleven.
dellucci, finley would have made a fine outfield back then
Yes, I should say that, which, I should say that.
dellucci, finley and bradley?
(i mean, seriously…brooks robinson called him bradley anderson, right?)

or maybe through jello.

Hey who's the ump tonight?
I have to say the guy is consistent and his strike zone is probably one of the most accurate I’ve seen all year…
Imagine we had 2 Jeremy Guthries?
"There is a value to breaking the string of losing seasons as an organization or as a franchise. But breaking that streak can’t come at the expense of doing what you need to do to get your franchise to the point where it can reach the postseason." ~Andy MacPhail
In the 69 starts NOT made by Guthrie or Cabrera
The other guys have averaged:
5 IP
3.6 ER (6.54 ERA)
Replace 25 of those starts with another Guthrie (6.5 IP, 2.4 ER), and the O’s are probably 5-6 wins better, or about even with the Yanks.
dear guts...
you are totally awesome! how DO you do it?
fondest regards,

Any chance of that Bergesen coming up?
I mean, there’s no way he could do worse than the trash we’re throwing out there every 3rd, 4th, and 5th day
"There is a value to breaking the string of losing seasons as an organization or as a franchise. But breaking that streak can’t come at the expense of doing what you need to do to get your franchise to the point where it can reach the postseason." ~Andy MacPhail
I think they are waiting for Penn
They really want to avoid calling pitchers up from AA.
Bergesen would almost certainly struggle in the majors, considering he isn’t missing many bats in AA.
Understandable
But whenever I see his number they flash on the screen every 5 days I get so depressed at the prospect of seeing poor, poor Dennis Sarfate being sacrificed one more time.
"There is a value to breaking the string of losing seasons as an organization or as a franchise. But breaking that streak can’t come at the expense of doing what you need to do to get your franchise to the point where it can reach the postseason." ~Andy MacPhail
I agree that it's painful to watch
But unfortunately, Penn and Liz are the most likely callups at this point.
Plenty of pain to go around.

thank you, thank you.
that stove was so tight a fit, it wouldn’t travel past the sink because the wall is a little bowed there. he had to lift it over the counter, move it back to the exhaust fan and lower it down.oy vey.
I love the counter
"There is a value to breaking the string of losing seasons as an organization or as a franchise. But breaking that streak can’t come at the expense of doing what you need to do to get your franchise to the point where it can reach the postseason." ~Andy MacPhail
thanks.
would you believe that’s IKEA?
that entire counter cost about $120. And it’s durable as all hell.
really
I never would have guessed that. It looks way nicer than IKEA. Good find.
"There is a value to breaking the string of losing seasons as an organization or as a franchise. But breaking that streak can’t come at the expense of doing what you need to do to get your franchise to the point where it can reach the postseason." ~Andy MacPhail
Yeah, I was pretty psyched.
It solved a major time constraint for me in that I didn’t have to order it and wait two weeks.
FYI, everything in that kitchen is IKEA except the appliances.
meaning, the sink, the counter, the fixtures, even the exhaust fan.
Looks good!

Why end his night?
He’s still throwing 95 and with a pitch count of 101, he could at least start the next inning.
Rocky Cherry and Jamie Walker are your alternatives.
Over 100 pitches and he was shaking hands in the dugout. Maybe not, but it sure looked like the end of his night.
Especially since it's only a 1 run lead.
makes me nervous

Oops
But see, the way this team is hitting, if ANY other starter could consistently provides QS, they’d be winning a lot more. Guts is carrying this team.
by fishoutawata on Aug 13, 2008 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Depends on what you mean
I think there’s a top tier of starting pitchers that are truly dominant, and I don’t think Guts is there.
That said, the elite tier is only about 5-10 pitchers big, and Guthrie ranks well in that second tier of 10-15 starters. There’s also a lot of value in his ability to stay healthy (so far), and his stellar defense.
I don’t think a team really needs a pitcher in that elite tier to be successful, though. A team with Guthrie as their best pitcher can make the playoffs and win in the playoffs.
An' how 'bout our frozen dessert?
Got his ERA down to 16.20!
:)
i bet it was because he had to sit so long in the top of the inning.
even though we didn’t score, it was a long inning. maybe he stiffened up.
