If there were a Guthrie Bowl, it would look a little something like this:
Quality Starts: 18
Non Quality Starts: 8
And in three of those non QS's, Guts pitched enough innings but missed by one run, and got the win. I can't even begin to imagine how awful this team would be without him .

That's PRESIDENT Guthrie to you
He’s president of my heart. I just hope the O’s can build a team around him with enough time left for him to help us compete.

I dunno, you'll have to ask Bush
The issue seems to be up for debate

I have to say
he’s become my favorite O’s starter since Mussina (who, btw, is still my favorite O’s pitcher of all time). Talk about an amazingly awesome pickup… now lets sign matsuz and get this thing goin!

Slow down on the Matusz thing
Aside from any remaining doubt about his signing, and aside from however long it will take him to develop into a MLB-level pitcher, there is the matter of IF… as in IF he will ever turn into a MLB pitcher, or perhaps be the next Adam Loewen, but with no appreciable hitting potential. I’m with the Don’t Overpay for a Pitching Prospect school, and I don’t care how good he was in HS.
Now St. Guts—that’s a different story. Only love here (as long as he doesn’t try to convert my deceased ancestors).

just so you all know
i’m def. not that high on the kid yet. i just wanna see it get done. another quality prospect in the fray cant hurt. if nothing else, it pushes all the other kids to work a little harder or risk getting passed by. i dont care who steps up, as long as a couple of them do.

sorry, but...
really no comparison to adam loewen. loewen had, what? a year of juco experience? this guy is fairly polished and barring injury, as w/ ANY prospect, it seems to be more a matter of not if he can ever contribute at the major league level, but in what capacity.

Loewen certainly had similar expectation placed on him
Especially after his World Baseball Classic performance—everybody had him down as the Next Big Thing. As far as polish goes, I’d say Loewen had more tools coming in than >90% of decent pitching prospects, including a range of plus pitches and smarts—he was far from just a guy who could throw hard and blow away college hitters. All I’m saying, really, is that these things are inherently unpredictable, even taking obvious talent into consideration, and a draft pick, any draft pick, remains an unproven prospect until, well, proven. Loewen was cited to prove that point, not to say that Matusz is particularly like Lowen. That being the case, a guy like that should not be able to just name his price—not yet, anyway. He should get a decent signing bonus with his minor league contract, but only really cash in on his potential when it starts to be realized.

Smarts???
Everything I’ve read and heard from people who played with him is that he’s dumb as a fucking rock.

he apparently did well on Flanagan's psychological tests
So he has at least one type of smarts.

I think I just figured the Sarfate thing out
Someone in the front office thought that putting a hard-throwing reliever into the rotation would suddenly turn him into one of the best starting pitchers in the majors.
It worked with Guthrie, right?

Jeremy out after 7 innings
It was asked in the game thread why Jeremy didn’t come back for the 8th, Peter Schmuck has the answer
Turns out, his back began to stiffen up in the sixth inning and he told manager Dave Trembley that it had worsened during the seventh. Trembley had no choice but to remove him from the game.

Ah, makes sense
Dave Johnson, who I normally like and whose opinion I normally respect, was throwing a hissy fit about how he hoped Guts didn’t ask to leave the game. I guess he was insinuating that he didn’t want Guts to ask to leave just co he could get back to the hotel earlier… and I was thinking, don’t you know Guthrie a little better than that, Dave? Can’t you see Guts hustling to field every ball that is hit to him and know that he wants to win?
Dave’s comments just rubbed me the wrong way. I think a stiff back – which would mean he wouldn’t be the best pitcher available in the eighth – is a pretty valid reason to not come back out for the eighth. I mean, it doesn’t even seem like he ASKED to leave – TrembO took him out.

Last night Joe Angel was saying Guts has room to improve, i.e. from awesome to...
what, mega-awesome? The idea is that of his 3 pitches, the change-up is only adequate-to-good. When that moves to good-to-excellent, Guts will dominate like never before.
A Big Mac for thought, in any case. Oh, and let’s hope this back thing is something trivial, of course.

I know this is a call back
to the little bickering match a bunch of you were having awhile ago, but I looked up their stats and it’s funny how similar those two really are this year. Guthrie gives up a few more HR and Lester gives up a few more BB, but other than that their stats are practically identical. Lester is 5 years younger, which obviously gives him a big edge.

Guthrie's Contract
Why haven’t the O’s signed Guthrie to a long-term deal? As I understand it, his contract expires at the end of the season. What is to keep him from hitting the free agent market, where, if he keeps going at this rate, he will be one of the top pitchers on the market? Signing Guthrie — a great talent and a class act — should be the O’s highest priority.

Correct
He’s eligible for free agency after the 2012 season.
He will probably be super-two arbitration eligible this offseason, so that’s a good time to start talking about signing him long-term.
Honestly, though, it probably makes more sense to go year-to-year with him for now.

year to year
As much as I would like to see my boy Guts get a huge long term payday, it would be best if the O’s go year to year with him. When he hits the free agent market, hes gonna be 33 with his best years more than likely behind him. Wouldn’t make much sense to sign an older guy like that, but he might still make a solid 3 or 4 starter at that age most likely, and the O’s are supposed to be competing by then… so who knows? Best course of action is to go year by year with such uncertainty. Or just buy out his arb years. Either way the O’s are in a really good spot with Guthrie right now
by UMterp08 on Aug 14, 2008 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
isn't Gut's agent Boras?
If that’s the case, he won’t accept a buy out of his arb years and go year to year.
