Orioles, Matusz closing in on deal
CLEVELAND - Orioles first-round draft pick Brian Matusz is scheduled to be in Baltimore tomorrow to take a physical, one of the final steps to reaching an agreement on a contract.
According to a source familiar with the negotiations, the two sides are closing in a deal that could be finalized within the next 24 hours. The Orioles have until midnight Friday to reach an agreement or they'll forfeit the draft rights of the University of San Diego left-handed pitcher and get a similar compensatory pick in next year's draft.
...Both sides have been mum about the type of signing bonus Matusz has been seeking, but it's believed he originally was looking for a major league contract of about $5 million.

He's really going to get a major league contract?

It says that's what he was looking for
I hope they learned their lesson with Loewen.

i have a lot more faith in that working out for a three year college starter than a dude who was basically a high school pitcher.

Yea, I’ve heard Matusz could start in AA and may be the first in his draft class to reach the majors. So I don’t think a major league deal would rush him like it did Loewen.

Good to see its almost finished. I thought he was supposed to be an easy sign. It really would have been nice to get him some innings this year. Especially given our pitching troubles. But I guess we’ll have to wait until the Arizona Fall League.

3 million? 4 million?
I wonder what number they’re settling on. The O’s spent a lot on Wieters, and Matusz was picked one slot higher (right?). Bud’s slot system idea will again be shot to hell.
As for details, I’ll be shocked if MacPhail makes any Loewen-like guarantees.

Confirmation from Roch that Matusz is in Baltimore
Brian Matusz arrived in Baltimore around 7 a.m. and is undergoing his physical as I type this entry.
Now here’s the really important part: The deal isn’t done. Matusz hasn’t signed a contract yet.
The Orioles want to get the physical out of the way so there are no delays before Friday’s midnight deadline. And as long as Matusz hasn’t signed anything, he retains his college eligibility.
Obviously, the two sides are very close or Matusz wouldn’t be here. He flew from San Diego, through Las Vegas.
All that’s left is him passing the physical and working out those final details.

huh...
mlb.com’s orioles guy says the deal may be a major league deal for less dough.
MLB.com’s Spencer Fordin says the O’s and Matusz inched closer to a deal, perhaps for a Major League contract worth $3.1MM. However, no agreement is confirmed.
