Guthrie Contract Status
Does anyone know the contract status of Jeremy Guthrie? If he has not yet been signed by the O's, we better move quickly, as he is establishing himself as one of the top pitchers in baseball. (If we don't sign him, you can bet your bottom $$ that the Red Sox or Yankees will . . . ) He is a great pitcher and a class act -- let's claim him as our own for years to come!

Only 1.130 Years of MLB experience
He can’t hit the market until he has 6 years of service. Check out this website, you will like it…

I do not like this website
Look at the money we owe Gibbons, Ramon, Walker, and Baez through NEXT SEASON.

At least Razor
could still fetch a half decent return on the trade market this offseason.

I hope the O's give him a James Shields type deal in the offseason

I do too
I’m completely sold on the guy. He seems like a great clubhouse presence… he’s an ace and a legit stopper. Excellent with the magic flute, too.

And unlike a lot of starters
seems to be actually interested in games hes not pitching in, a very admirable trait that shouldn’t go without saying.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Got that right
He’s always on top of the steps, with both of his arms hanging over the railing, watching. Not only that, but his interest has also sparked the interests of some of our other starters.

I would be leary of re-signing Guthrie
He’ll be 30 early next year. He’ll be 34 before he’s eligible to be a free agent. If he was only, say 26, right now I’d be more eager to sign him. I don’t think he’s so good that he needs a long-term deal just yet. Give him a couple more years and maybe we’ll see. Sad fact is he could be washed up by the time he hits FA.
His K rate isn’t as high as I’d necessarily like, either.

yeah
I’m all for treating the guy well, but there’s a limit, too. We treated Mora well and look what that got us.

you guys are so predictable
Using logic and common sense, you always resort to sound business-minded decisions regarding players. Well, sometimes you have to have heart. Jeremy Guthrie needs some TLC from Baltimore, and I think we should reward him now before he becomes a superstar pitcher and acrimoniously leaves Baltimore for New York to take the reigns from Mike Mussina as another angry Baltimorian expatriot.
In all seriousness though – his K rate concerns you? It’s usually a decent stat, but there are many great pitchers who are outliers in that regard. Guthrie is one of them.

It's usually better to provide examples to substantiate a claim
Also, I’m not convinced Guthrie is “great.” He’s very good, yes. But “great?” I like to be a little stingier with that adjective.
I just think he’s too old. How many non-ex-Negro-Leaguers become superstars after not doing anything in the majors until after their 28th birthdays?
This doesn’t mean he can’t be a very useful player for the next four years. Let’s just not go overboard. Like SC said, the FO reached with Mora and look where that got them.
