How we get to .500
Taking a look at the rest of the schedule, I think we have a decent shot to get to that magic 81-win mark. Here's how I think it would/could happen, breaking down the season into remaining road-trips and homestands:
Today vs. Tribe + 3 games in Detroit. We win 2 of 4. 59-64.
10 game home stand vs. PHN, Yanks, ChiSox (including finishing the suspended game): we win 6 of 10. 65-68.
6 on the road (Tampa and Boston): We win 3 of 6. 68-71.
10 more at home vs. Oak, Cle, Min: We win 7 of 10. 75-74
6 on the road @ Tor and @ NYY, including last game ever at Yankee Stadium: We win 2 of 6. 77-78.
7 at home to wrap up vs. Tampa and Toronto: We win 4 of 7. 81-81.
I know Guts can only start 1 game every 5 days, but I think Trembley will have these guys fighting to the very end.

I know alot of people don't care
but I do. At least get to eighty wins, thats a nice round number, especially in the AL East.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

its unlikely
but it’d be nice. if for nothing else i’d like not have to answer my friends questions of “how many straight losing seasons is it now?”

The baseball draft is so unscientific
high picks don’t matter nearly as much as they would in the NBA draft. I mean prospect signability is as big a deal as anything in factoring in the decision to draft a particular player or not. Its a crapshoot.

That's somewhat true
Signability allows some players to drop, but there’s definitely some significant tiering in talent.
If you break up the first round into 1-5, 6-15, and 16-20, the top 5 group has a much better chance to turn into an impact player than the other two groups. There’s a dropoff from the 6-15 to the 16-20 group, but it’s not as big.
At this point, the Orioles would have to go into one of their patented late season swoons to get a top 5 pick, so picking anywhere between #8 and #18 shouldn’t make a huge difference.
There is one wild card: if the Orioles end up signing a type A free agent this offseason, the #16 pick turns out to be significantly worse than the #15 pick. When you sign a type A free agent, you forfeit your first round pick, UNLESS you have a top 15 pick, in which case you forfeit your second round pick instead.
They are currently in line to pick #12, so I’d really prefer them to stay in the top 15 so they have the flexibility to sign a premier free agent if one falls into their lap.

Where the hell has tanking september actually got us in the last ten years with this franchise?
Lets try winning ballgames late in the season, let these guys finish with a winning taste in their mouth.

I don't want to tank,
its that simple, especially not for something as uncertain as a fifth pick. Tanking is bad karma. I’d much rather have a lot of picks.

is he?
by what measure? his offensive numbers show improvement as, if ever so slightly, do his defensive numbers.
is there a case to be made that maybe he was rushed? if so, is there a lesson for the o’s re: wieters?

Gordon
His defense has been terrible. Worst among 3Bs according to baseballthinkfactory. His offense isn’t anything to crow about either. 7th out of 9 3Bs in the AL according to ESPN. Overall, his bat is passable (101 OPS+), but this isn’t what the Royals, or anybody, had in mind for Gordon. People were expecting Evan Longoria out of Gordon, not Melvin Mora (actually Mora is better).

He torn up AA. He was ready. I don’t think AAA would have done anything for him. I don’t think there’s any lesson for Wieters. Blue chips prospects sometime despite proper handling. Although, i wouldn’t give up Gordon yet.

Not that losing’s acceptable by any means, but fer Pete’s sake…enough with the W-L record. I defer to the Mysterious Machinations of MacPhail until 2010.

Going .500
Is basically one the last remaining reasons for me to watch the team. Pardon me, not a “reason” , more of an “excuse” …. esspecially since Adam Jones got hurt.
We have an easier August and September than most team, esspecially in our division. I think we lead the Al East in the number of days we have off from here on out.
