Matusz Signs!
http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-osdraft815,0,5410825.story
The Orioles and first-round pick Brian Matusz have agreed to terms on a major league deal that would immediately insert him onto the club's 40-man roster and toward the top of the organization's list of pitching prospects, The Sun has learned.
Matusz, a left-hander out of the University of San Diego and the fourth overall pick in June's amateur draft, will receive a $3.2 million bonus.
The Orioles believed all along that they would sign Matusz, who took a physical in Baltimore earlier this week, but the talks dragged on.

Yay!
Sounds good.
Does anyone know if a handy list exists that shows the O’s draft picks and if they signed/how much?

This doesn’t have the bonus info, but signed players are in bold.

The O’s are probably done signing players, with the possible exception of 18th rounder Landers, and 44th rounder Brady.

Cool
Not a huge signing bonus, but Matusz signed a major league deal.

I don't know...
I’m not big on giving out major league deals to guys that have never done it. I guess it’s safer than doing it for a high schooler but still. That being said…I’m glad they did what they had to do to get him signed and here’s hoping he doesn’t try coming back as an OF in five years.

I would really like to see...
where our farm system ranks after this signing period.
Wieters, Tillman, Mickolio, Matusz…
I finally feel like there is some serious talent in the pipeline.

except maybe for Tampa.

I’m all about signing college players like that!
I think he should be ready by 2010.

Major league contract... grumble grumble grumble grumble
On the other hand, its not a huge amount of money, and a spot on the 40 man roster isn’t a huge loss. The article reads that Matusz could pitch in the minor leagues for 4 years (through 2012) before the Orioles called him up. So he could be 26 before he was “forced” into the majors. He’ll probably be ready by then. I suppose he could go the way of Jeremy Guthrie with the Indians, but hopefully that won’t happen.

Is that right about having to clear waivers?
I thought a guy on the 40 man roster had three option years where the team can move him up and down. After those three option years, he has to clear waivers in order to go to the minors. That clock is ticking now.
I’m a little surprised… I guess MacPhail and crew are very confident that he’ll be in the majors relatively soon.

Great news
They had this billed like a slam dunk when they drafted them, so I got pretty worried when it dragged out this far. I’m not ecstatic like I was when they got the Wieters deal done (b/c of the drama that went with it), but I’m still pretty stoked.

i gotta say...
even if matusz (at least at this point) doesn’t elecrtify like wieters, arrieta and tillman, i must say it’s nice to have legit prospects, not dudes that are more likely, relatively speaking, to make it up than others.

Great to hear
Matusz might not have an incredibly high ceiling, but he should be one of the better prospects in the system by this time next year. The scouting reports seems to indicate he’s capable of moving up very, very quickly.

ML contract
Law thinks he should be in the majors in 18 months, so hopefully this will be fine.
