Gameday Thread: O's (58-62) @ Tigers (59-62)
Baltimore Orioles at Detroit Tigers, Aug 15, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
7:05 / MASN2 :: 74° :: Wind out to RF - 9 MPH :: Rain - 20%
Today's Starting Pitchers GS IP ERA WHIP BAA HR BB K W-L Chris Waters - LH 2 12.0 4.50 1.17 .186 2 6 8 1-0 Nate Robertson - LH 24 140.1 5.84 1.58 .313 19 43 90 7-8
There was no way you could have convinced me in the spring that the O's and Tigers would have basically the same record on August 15.
Part of the problem, I guess, is relying on guys like Nate Robertson to continue their level of relative success. Nate's a little below league average most years, and guys like that run the risk of a few extra bad pitches a year making them pretty damn awful, which he has been (74 ERA+). If it weren't for the epic fail that is Dontrelle Willis, Robertson would be the Tigers' worst starter this season. I know Willis only threw a handful of games, but he was so bad that it can be no one else. That's another one you could sort of see coming, and anyone that tells you differently has just not paid attention to Willis' stunning and progressive collapse since the high water mark of 2005.
Speaking of high waters, y'all are high if you expect much out of Waters today.
Trivia: Waters was born in Lakeland, FL, home of a Tigers single-A affiliate.
Trivia: Waters' middle name is Myron.

Trivia:
Q: How many people nationally (including Baltimore) will be watching this game on a Friday night with the Olympics on?
A: 47; half of them members of Camden Chat who check in for one or two innings, the other half are the people who watch TV for Nielssen ratings.

as i understand it
once a team brings a player up to the majors, two things happen:
1) that player can become a free agent after three years; and
2) that player can only be sent down to the minors against his consent ("optioning") three more times (which is why you hear about players being "out of options).
by signing a player to a mlb contract, the Orioles have started the clock. Like with Loewen, they must have Matusz on the ML roster by 2011 or they lose their rights to him. Also, they can only send him down and up three more times.
anyone feel free to jump in and correct whre i’m wrong on this.

I'm thinking Jay in center
and Lou being more mobile than Luke at the moment.

So....
why was Waters removed after 4 2/3? I just got home….
"We might as well just win this game." -Adam Jones
he was pitching pretty well,
although he got a twin killing or two to help him out.
then all of a sudden he gave up 3 or 4 hits in a row. and they weren’t bloopers.
so trembley got the hook.
he'd just given up a couple base hits
after giving up a HR, he wasn’t looking terrible, but DD didn’t want to see the kid get lit up again, I think.

he did.
it was the Rangers game, and it wasn’t pretty.

i just mean in general
what are we playing for anyway?
"We might as well just win this game." -Adam Jones
Pride.
Contempt for the Red Sox, Yankees, and Blue Jays.
Pissing on the “worst team in baseball” stuff from spring training.
The usual, you know.

Oh, I have plenty of pride
And I hate the Red Sox and Yankees, but I think we’re at the trial and error part of the season. Let’s see Waters get his ass kicked, then he’ll adjust and he better off next season.
"We might as well just win this game." -Adam Jones
might have had something to with giving up a HR to Placido Polanco
Polanco’s not supposed to get those.
Still, it was a weird call
thanks, Miguel.
We appreciate the run.

Finally, an umpire's call goes our way.
Way to go, Placido.

he’s on there now, sort of gravelly voice. He is ABSOLUTELY awful, kind of indicative of the trite that BBTN has become

When he started warming up it was still a save situation.

I like the games that end with the O's with a lot of runs
and the other team without very many.

Oh stop it
he’s not that bad.
And in any case, they warmed him up in a save situation, but theyre going to use him anyway.
He sucks.
He’s a closer with a 4.56 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. Oops…that just went down. He only put one obligatory runner on this inning. But I’m happy with them pitching him now…9 run games are when you want a guy like flatbill in .
hey, so that happened...
wow, i rest my eyes a couple minutes and all the sudden it’s flat breezy time!
