O's 16, Tigers 8: Melvin Mora is beyond awesome.
If you didn't watch today's game (and let's face it, you probably didn't), here is all you need to know: Melvin Mora is the most awesome baseball player on the face of the earth. Coming in a close second is Luke Scott. Between the two of them today they had 8 hits, 4 HR, 2 2B, knocked in 10 runs and scored 6.
The O's finish their 7 game road trip at 4-3 and now head home to face the Red Sox, Yankees, and White Sox.

I can't believe I'm actually typing this,
but it’s been a nice bounceback year for Mora. What the hell.

bounce-back month
I hope it continues, but Mora still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Well I know his performance this year is uneven
but the numbers he’s put up overall are pretty decent for a 3B who is average defensively. In other words, he might be back in “he’s not a problem” territory. Which, of course, is not the same as being a solution.

Since he's signed through the end of '09
with a full NTC, I’ll take “not a problem.” They just gave him some major love on BBTN. I put on ESPN because I thought the Rays game was going to be on ESPN since it’s at 8, but it turns out it’s the Phillies, so now I’m annoyed.

It is annoying
I’d much rather see Rangers-Rays than Phils-Padres.

Oh, just an anecdote
I was in my car for most of the game today, so I had the Detroit radio feed playing on XM. It was great to hear them ooh and ahh over some of the home runs the O’s hit. The Luke Scott monster shot – his second of the day, I think – left the Detroit announcers awestruck. It gave me goosebumps to hear them struggle to comprehend the awesomeness of Luke Scott.

And they couldn't shut up about Memlo, literally-- until, after "Unbelievable", they said they
“didn’t have terms to describe this with.” Yikes!

.286 BA, 20 HRs
if you would asked me if i’d take that on the year from melmo, i would have said hells yea. wish it was a bit more spread out, but whatever. I guess a 5 for 6 game with 2 hr’s makes his numbers a bit more palatable.
then again, 1 more E5 today too…

related to melvin's beyond awesomeness...
i went to a game a few weeks back and i think they actually played one step beyond as his walk up music for a couple at bats before reverting back to the standard issue salsa music. it was sort of weird.

Here's the best quote from the second link:
I can imagine Dave Tremblay gathering his team in the clubhouse after today’s game, asking them to form a circle around him, Mora, and Scott, and asking his two sluggers the following question:
“What is best in life?”
To which Mora and Scott would respond in unison, “To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of the women.”

From a Rays fan
I’m pulling for you guys on your next road trip. It’s my secret little wish to see every team in the AL East finish above .500 at the end of the season.
Oh, and Melvin Mora is indeed Boss.

speaking of .500
We are a 6-3 streak away from being there. We got the Sox, the Yanks, and then the other Sox to play during this homestand. It’s one of our hardest homestands, but we play pretty good at home. Boston is the only team capable of sweeping us.

Realistically, the Yanks are your donut series in that group.
The Soxes are going to be tough since the ChiSox are in a tooth-and-nail batter with the Twinkies and the BoSox are busy trying to catch the Rays and hold on to the wild-card. The Yanks may be within reach of the wild-card at 7 games out, but to get there they’ll have to jump over at least four teams. They’re done, even if they don’t realize it yet.

That's been said before, and the Yankees somehow got it done anyway
Although, that was the pre-Rays era. Maybe things are different this year. I sure as hell hope so.

Got my words crossed; I meant I'm pulling for you guys over your next homestand, these 9 games
But the way I see it, the Yankees can’t just win their way in at this point in the season, multiple teams ahead of them (either the Rays or the BoSox AND the Twins or the ChiSox) would have to outright melt-down. I suppose there is a slim chance since over the rest of the season, they’ve got 6 vs. the Rays, 6 vs the BoSox, and 4 vs the ChiSox, but they need help. Lots and lots of help.

A nice wish, and I hope it comes true...except for a tiny voice in some anterior lobe of my brainpain
which keeps saying Wouldn’t it be great if the Yerkees just kept on imploding and imploding and imploding? I mean, Hank deserves it so much.
I also hope the entire gang of serial mediocrities that is the NPL West finishes under .500, where they all belong. Crap division in a crap league— which should be playing the Japanese Central in IL play, so they could be competitive.
That said, here’s to the Rays— long may they keep handing the Sawx their lunch (at least until we’re back in contention), it’s a pleasant sight to behold. And tonight’s probably our best chance this week to contribute to the cause, as it’s Guts Guthrie going for us, the league QS leader — and the envy of the more perceptive Sawx fenz out there, hee-hee.

I have a much more seething hatred for the BoSox than the Yanks based on the bandwagon.
I just see Sox fans as far far more obnoxious than Yankees fans.

insert cherry picking stats...
Last 12 games, when he was put into the 3-slot:
Yes that’s a .537 BA and a 1.531 OPS. His BA jumped 35 points and his OPS almost 100. He should win player of the week.

Buck Martinez blog on Mora:
Right here. He’s having one of the most prolific batting tears in 30 games than almost any other player in history according to Buck.
Mora has been a wrecking ball. I hope next year he can start off at least 1/3rd as hot as he’s hitting right now before he heats up.

They’ll look at Mora and Huff and say, “fluky year” then move on.

actually, if the season were to end today, both would have pretty solid and not entirely unexepected lines. fact is, though, there’s still a ways to go and both have been on pretty serious tears. huff much more so from the standpoint of duration.

yeah but Mora is old
and hasn’t had a year like this since signing his new contract. And Huff hasn’t had a year like since his TB days. If another team decided Mora and Huff had fluke years, I wouldn’t blame them.
