Reliever George Sherrill has been placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to Aug. 16) with inflammation in his left shoulder. If it is nothing more than that, he would be eligible to return to the active duty on Sept. 1, the day rosters expand from 25 to 40.
Sherrill informed manager Dave Trembley yesterday that he was unable to loosen up before the series opener against the Red Sox. He was examined today and underwent an MRI, leading to the decision to DL him. Presumably, Jim Johnson will take over the the closer role for now, though Trembley could simply go with a bullpen by committee and play the matchups in the ninth inning.

Disappointing.
Though I wonder how long it’s been going on, seeing as he’s been much less effective lately than he had been earlier in the year…

Dammit
There goes his trade value.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

he was already untradeable, he failed to clear waivers and the O's didn't trade him
It’ll be tough without him though. Our Bullpen was often unwatchable as it is.

I was going to wait
And give Andy the benefit of the doubt, trusting that he knew something we didn’t; now I am just pissed that he didn’t deal him for at the least one good prospect.

why?
Sherrill didn’t clear waivers, so he wasn’t going to be traded for the rest of the season
He doesn’t need surgery, and probably wouldn’t be out for 15 days if it wasn’t required.
MacPhail didn’t know Sherrill was going to be injured, and even if he did, it’s kind of low to trade damaged goods as if they are healthy.
When it comes to the Sherrill situation, nothing has changed long term, we just got worse short term.

or there was never any intention of trading him...
so this gives the O’s a chance to make a call up half a month early without f-ing up Sherrill’s contract status… or whatever.
Kevbo: [to George Sherrill] George, you look a lot like Vin Diesel...
Flatbill: Let's get somethin' straight... Vin Diesel looks like me.

When it comes to the Sherrill situation, nothing has changed long term,
Except for his trade value in comparison to two months ago.

no, I really don't think that's changed any
pitchers get nicked up, it happens. If he plays well next season, his trade value will be high, and if he doesn’t it will be low.

It’s his poor performance the last two months that’s driven down his trade value, not the injury. But he can rebuild his value next year as you say.

The reason people were mad
Myself included, was because we thought that his value wasn’t going to get any higher. He still had a respectable/good ERA and WHIP and he had just come off of a great All-Star game performance, not to mention he was healthy. Apparently Andy was close to getting two ML ready prospects for him, now that seems pretty laughable. I’m not faulting Andy for being unable to predict that GS would get injured, but it seemed pretty certain to me that his value wasn’t going to get much higher than it was already.

We don't really know what Andy was offered
certainly several decent/good relievers were traded for crap this season (see Nationals)

Where did you hear this? W/o knowing the players, Andy probably should have pulled the trigger.
