Chad Bradford traded
Gotta hand it to Roch - he gets news fast.

Bradford to Tampa for PTBNL. I'm not really sure what that means in terms of the quality of this trade though... I'm always skeptical of the PTBNL. Bradford's been having a typical great year too.. I hope we get a good haul for him.
Good luck, Bradford! Thanks for a great 2 years.

Re: Walker
That’s assuming there is a team out there that hasn’t scouted him and doesn’t read stats. And sorry, the Mariners aren’t buying from us.
Nice thought, though.

Yup
Sorry to see him go, though I do trust Andy.

I never liked P's TBNL
I always have a feeling that if the named player starts to really suck for his new team, that will affect the PTBNL in terms of quality. How exactly does a trade like this work?
Kevbo: [to George Sherrill] George, you look a lot like Vin Diesel...
Flatbill: Let's get somethin' straight... Vin Diesel looks like me.
-From "The Making of Orioles Magic"
I think PTBNL means one of the following:
1) The player has already been decided on, but he could not clear waivers. This would be a player that is on Tampa’s 40-man roster, and the trade will have to be completed after the playoffs when the waiver restriction is lifted.
2) The Orioles and Rays agreed on a list of players from which one will be chosen based on either the performance of Bradford or the performance of the prospects for the remainder of the season.
Also
I think it’s more likely that it’s #2 and the Orioles will get a fringe prospect back from Tampa.
This move is mostly about saving the Orioles about $4.5 MM over the next year and a half.

Andy has been pretty consistent about not wanting to dump salary for the sake of dumping salary. I have a feeling that we’re getting a decent prospect back.
Wolf, wolf, wolf.
not to mention... $4.5mil isn't really a handicapping amount
for a guy who has repeatedly stabilized our bullpen.
and for a guy
who’s been a long, solid track record and whose stuff sucks anyways thus, he’ll likely maintain it in the future. The Rays most likely see this trade for the present and future, which increases Bradford’s value.
Wolf, wolf, wolf.
You may be right
But don’t get your hopes up.
If MacPhail knows the Orioles can’t compete next year (and I think he does), then Bradford has almost zero value to the Orioles. In that case, saving $4.5MM dollars and picking up only a fringe prospect looks pretty enticing.
Also, making life even a little more difficult for the Sox and Yankees is a nice little bonus, as far as I’m concerned.

Andy doesn’t seem to think that way though. Andy seems perfectly willing to keep his vets in order to make a push finish near .500 if nobody is willing to offer any good prospects. Sherrill is a perfect case in point.
Wolf, wolf, wolf.
Sherrill's not a free agent until after 2011
He could theoretically be on a competitive Orioles team.
Sherrill’s in a completely different situation than Bradford.

Sure, sure, I’m just using that as an example of Andy’s mindset, or philosophy if you will, towards trades. He’s not dumping guys for sake of jumping guys or saving money. He tends to overvalue guys and waits until a team overpays.
Wolf, wolf, wolf.
Quote from Andy
http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/schmuck/2008/08/more_than_a_feeling.html
“We just thought going forward, it gives us an opportunity for other people in our system who have some upside, to get a look for the rest of ‘08 and ‘09. I think we have that guy (a right-handed setup guy) in our system and I’m going to need to fill some other needs, so I can use the dough.”
No mention of the PTBNL as a crucial part of the deal.
Yeah, just posted the same thing
Depending on the prospect, may be it is a salary dump. I guess no Reid Brignac. :(
Wolf, wolf, wolf.
Maybe it is a salary dump

Will
finishing around .500 this and next year have some influence on FA signings to be?

rays fan here! thanks for bradford!
im pretty sure that it isnt going to be lower type prospect that we give you guys but i have no idea who it is yet
Longo=ROY. Friedman=Executive of the year. Maddon=Manager of the year. Rays=WS champs 08! fiddler cat=best way to show your excitement. BJ UPTON IS NOT LAZY! ! ! Gabe Gross=caption clutch.
You're welcome
Please use him wisely to continue embarassing the evil empires.
we will! the red sux are interesting in getting brian giles and joe borowski now
i hope that they sign borowski,
also baltimore is going to be good again in a couple of years with their farm system loaded with arms and some bats as well. Mcphail is doing a pretty good job with you guys and if he sticks to the plan that he is doing right now you guys will be back in it soon
Longo=ROY. Friedman=Executive of the year. Maddon=Manager of the year. Rays=WS champs 08! fiddler cat=best way to show your excitement. BJ UPTON IS NOT LAZY! ! ! Gabe Gross=caption clutch.
Best of luck this year
I hope Bradford helps you guys out. Hopefully in the future it’ll be the O’s and Rays fighting for the top spot in the standings.

Hope he works out for you
and don’t mind us while we raid your fridge…

and remember, if you’re going to beat us this season, you had better beat everyone else too! ;)
Curt never met a buttered roll he didn't like.
best of luck as well...
...to that end, Chadford should never be used against a lefty…

Dont Forget
It could be a player that was drafted last year and signed on Aug. 15th so he hasn’t been on their roster for 1 year…I believe…so that would mean that we know who the PTBNL is just he isn’t allowed to be trade yet.

That would probably only apply to the first round pick. I doubt the Rays are sending us David Price for Bradford, although I guess we could dream.
Wolf, wolf, wolf.
I don’t believe it would only apply to the first round, i thought it was any draft pick (to coincide with the no trading draft picks rule)

Yes, it doesn’t apply to only the first round picks. But I think first rounders typically hold out the longest (?). For example, I think I only a few of the top 12 picks from the 2008 draft have signed. So I’m assuming that Price is the only pick from last year that held out for awhile, but I didn’t check my facts.
Wolf, wolf, wolf.
FWIW
If I remember correctly, there were about 4 guys other than David Price who signed deals at the last minute last year because their deals were above slot. DJ Jones and David Newmann pop into my head immediately, I think there might have been a mid-round pitcher or two as well.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
I meant only Rays picks from last year
But maybe DJ Jones and Newmann were Rays picks, if so, my bad.
Wolf, wolf, wolf.
Yeah, they were drafted by the Rays
Rays fan here. Sorry, I invade whenever we pull off a deal to see the other side’s viewpoint on it. I’ll probably drop by again when the PBTNL is named, if it’s anyone other than an organizational player.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
I wonder
If its maybe a mid-round pitcher. Or is there anybody on your roster who is out of options that probably wouldn’t make the roster next year?
Also I think you are really going to like Bradford, lots and lots of ground balls. I feel like he always came in with a man on first and usually got the DP out of it.

Hmm..
TB is loaded with players & prospects. Even for a salary dump like Bradford I think we’ll be happy with the return.
From the Land of Pleasant Living...
Wow,
I guess Tampa will be taking the rest of Chad’s salary. I’m a big Bradford fan. I hate to see him go but I’m glad he’ll get a chance to play for a contender. Hopefully the PTBNL won’t suck.
Wolf, wolf, wolf.
If by not suck
do you mean being on the actual major league club, or just giving us organizational depth like Scott Moore did this same time last year?
And for us Orioles fans, all those sold out Red Sox/Yankees home games really do add up, if the Rays want to eat the rest of Chad’s salary.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

do you mean being on the actual major league club, or just giving us organizational depth like Scott Moore did this same time last year?
On or off the ML club doesn’t really matter in determining suckiness. I wanted someone with upside. Scott Moore doesn’t have much upside. So yes, i was hoping for someone better.
Wolf, wolf, wolf.
this is a good sign, no?
i thought that was a big mantra of petey pete.

Didn't the O's do the same thing in 2006?
Javy Lopez to the BoSox for Adam Stern, as a post-trade deadline deal?
Vogt early, Vogt often.
I think the difference is that Javy Lopez actually made the Red Sox worse
It was a diabolical scheme to undermine the success of the Red Sox by giving them a shitty player.
ChadBrad, on the other hand, is pretty good, and I’m glad he’ll be able to help a contender.
I was also trying to articulate a suggestion that Rays fans should look to Boston fans as an example of how not to act once/if they do enjoy consistent success, but then I tried to quantify what exactly it is that I hate about red sox fans, and I couldn’t really come up with any concrete examples. I don’t want to tell Rays fans not to trash talk and not to gloat, because trash talking and gloating is part of winning. Boston fans… just do something a little different that I can’t quite put my finger on. Something a little more excessive that lifts them into the realm of unadulterated douchebaggery. Do you understand my point? Does it make any sense? I don’t even know. I guess my advice is to not worry about upsetting any other fanbases and just enjoy the Rays. I know I am.
who knows?
when the jays had their run, i legitimately found the team dislikeable. for yanks and sox today, it’s really about the fans, but i was surprised at the jays fans at the first game i went to opacy this year. so obnoxious. i could hardly believe it.

a lot of irritating ones...
not the sheer numbers of oppo fans i’d expect at a red sox or yanks game, but way more than i would have thought possible!

So long, ChadBrad
I’ve always had a soft spot for submariners, and Chad has been consistently effective for his entire career. I liked him before he was ever an Oriole, thanks to Moneyball.
Here’s hoping he helps those Rays keep the Evil Empire(s) away.
hear, hear...
submariners rule. yes, i even liked todd frohwirth.

-From "The Making of Orioles Magic"
doubtful
But the Rays were including him in the Bay trade so he’s not untouchable. And, at least with Sherrill, Andy has been OBSESSED with trading a reliever if ONLY a SS came back.
Wolf, wolf, wolf.
This says they weren't making him available
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/07/jason-bay-trade.html
Considering BA rated him as the #39 overall prospect this year, I’m not seeing him coming our way.
Curt never met a buttered roll he didn't like.
Andy never stops working
There’s no way we’d give away Bradford for nothing. 4.5 million just isn’t that much money, and they’ve been reluctant to trade several of their better players unless they got a sweet haul of prospects, which means that winning a few extra games now mean something.
so...
losing the chad probably now means sur-far-tay is back to the pen and penn is back w/ the big club?

Seems like it could be the case.
We’ll see what’s on the field tomorrow, then.

PTBNL
The Orioles are expected to announce who will fill Bradford’s spot on the active roster Friday.
Sounds to me like they’re just waiting to unveil Brignac on a gameday.
Sad to see Chad go
to the land of the hanging chad. (Hey, that’s his new Bay Rays nickname: Hanging Chad), but I am happy for him getting to go to a contender before his career is over. I’ve had a soft spot for Bradford since I read about him as an Oakland player in Moneyball. I just hope that when he pitches against us, Melmo or Millar takes him deep.
Red Rover, Red Rover
Let Rocky Cherry come over!
Cherry takes Bradford’s place in the pen. Sarfate stays in the rotation. Haven’t heard who the PTBNL is yet. Hopefully something will leak soon.
