Chad Bradford traded

Gotta hand it to Roch - he gets news fast.

http://masnsports.com/2008/08/trade-made.html

Bradford to Tampa for PTBNL. I'm not really sure what that means in terms of the quality of this trade though... I'm always skeptical of the PTBNL. Bradford's been having a typical great year too.. I hope we get a good haul for him.

Good luck, Bradford! Thanks for a great 2 years.

The key to this is the dump of salary.

Here’s hoping Walker has a similar fate.

Re: Walker

That’s assuming there is a team out there that hasn’t scouted him and doesn’t read stats. And sorry, the Mariners aren’t buying from us.

Nice thought, though.

I never liked P's TBNL

I always have a feeling that if the named player starts to really suck for his new team, that will affect the PTBNL in terms of quality. How exactly does a trade like this work?

Kevbo: [to George Sherrill] George, you look a lot like Vin Diesel...

Flatbill: Let's get somethin' straight... Vin Diesel looks like me.

I think PTBNL means one of the following:

1) The player has already been decided on, but he could not clear waivers. This would be a player that is on Tampa’s 40-man roster, and the trade will have to be completed after the playoffs when the waiver restriction is lifted.

2) The Orioles and Rays agreed on a list of players from which one will be chosen based on either the performance of Bradford or the performance of the prospects for the remainder of the season.

by dkdc on Aug 7, 2008 2:30 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Also

I think it’s more likely that it’s #2 and the Orioles will get a fringe prospect back from Tampa.

This move is mostly about saving the Orioles about $4.5 MM over the next year and a half.

Andy has been pretty consistent about not wanting to dump salary for the sake of dumping salary. I have a feeling that we’re getting a decent prospect back.

not to mention... $4.5mil isn't really a handicapping amount

for a guy who has repeatedly stabilized our bullpen.

by Y Not on Aug 7, 2008 2:37 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

and for a guy

who’s been a long, solid track record and whose stuff sucks anyways thus, he’ll likely maintain it in the future. The Rays most likely see this trade for the present and future, which increases Bradford’s value.

You may be right

But don’t get your hopes up.

If MacPhail knows the Orioles can’t compete next year (and I think he does), then Bradford has almost zero value to the Orioles. In that case, saving $4.5MM dollars and picking up only a fringe prospect looks pretty enticing.

Also, making life even a little more difficult for the Sox and Yankees is a nice little bonus, as far as I’m concerned.

Andy doesn’t seem to think that way though. Andy seems perfectly willing to keep his vets in order to make a push finish near .500 if nobody is willing to offer any good prospects. Sherrill is a perfect case in point.

by birdman on Aug 7, 2008 2:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Sherrill's not a free agent until after 2011

He could theoretically be on a competitive Orioles team.

Sherrill’s in a completely different situation than Bradford.

Sure, sure, I’m just using that as an example of Andy’s mindset, or philosophy if you will, towards trades. He’s not dumping guys for sake of jumping guys or saving money. He tends to overvalue guys and waits until a team overpays.

No mention of the PTBNL as a crucial part of the deal.

Dont Forget

It could be a player that was drafted last year and signed on Aug. 15th so he hasn’t been on their roster for 1 year…I believe…so that would mean that we know who the PTBNL is just he isn’t allowed to be trade yet.

It could be a player that was drafted last year and signed on Aug. 15th so he hasn’t been on their roster for 1 year

That would probably only apply to the first round pick. I doubt the Rays are sending us David Price for Bradford, although I guess we could dream.

Yes, it doesn’t apply to only the first round picks. But I think first rounders typically hold out the longest (?). For example, I think I only a few of the top 12 picks from the 2008 draft have signed. So I’m assuming that Price is the only pick from last year that held out for awhile, but I didn’t check my facts.

FWIW

If I remember correctly, there were about 4 guys other than David Price who signed deals at the last minute last year because their deals were above slot. DJ Jones and David Newmann pop into my head immediately, I think there might have been a mid-round pitcher or two as well.

Rays fan here. Sorry, I invade whenever we pull off a deal to see the other side’s viewpoint on it. I’ll probably drop by again when the PBTNL is named, if it’s anyone other than an organizational player.

by Brickhaus on Aug 8, 2008 9:11 AM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I wonder

If its maybe a mid-round pitcher. Or is there anybody on your roster who is out of options that probably wouldn’t make the roster next year?

Also I think you are really going to like Bradford, lots and lots of ground balls. I feel like he always came in with a man on first and usually got the DP out of it.

If by not suck

do you mean being on the actual major league club, or just giving us organizational depth like Scott Moore did this same time last year?
And for us Orioles fans, all those sold out Red Sox/Yankees home games really do add up, if the Rays want to eat the rest of Chad’s salary.

On or off the ML club doesn’t really matter in determining suckiness. I wanted someone with upside. Scott Moore doesn’t have much upside. So yes, i was hoping for someone better.

by j.q. higgins on Aug 7, 2008 5:52 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I think the difference is that Javy Lopez actually made the Red Sox worse

It was a diabolical scheme to undermine the success of the Red Sox by giving them a shitty player.

ChadBrad, on the other hand, is pretty good, and I’m glad he’ll be able to help a contender.

I was also trying to articulate a suggestion that Rays fans should look to Boston fans as an example of how not to act once/if they do enjoy consistent success, but then I tried to quantify what exactly it is that I hate about red sox fans, and I couldn’t really come up with any concrete examples. I don’t want to tell Rays fans not to trash talk and not to gloat, because trash talking and gloating is part of winning. Boston fans… just do something a little different that I can’t quite put my finger on. Something a little more excessive that lifts them into the realm of unadulterated douchebaggery. Do you understand my point? Does it make any sense? I don’t even know. I guess my advice is to not worry about upsetting any other fanbases and just enjoy the Rays. I know I am.

who knows?

when the jays had their run, i legitimately found the team dislikeable. for yanks and sox today, it’s really about the fans, but i was surprised at the jays fans at the first game i went to opacy this year. so obnoxious. i could hardly believe it.

There’s no way we’d give away Bradford for nothing. 4.5 million just isn’t that much money, and they’ve been reluctant to trade several of their better players unless they got a sweet haul of prospects, which means that winning a few extra games now mean something.
