Mike Mussina: Stuck on 17

Wayward O is not a mathematician, however, with 15 days left in season, it appears to be impossible for the Traitor-in-Pinstripes to stagger over the line with his first 20-win season.

I admit it's very hard to win 20 games in a season. And that's why it's so important for a pitcher to do it if he wants serious consideration for the HOF.

That's really all I have to say but I'm not sure If I typed 75 words yet. So let me say that, in addition to hot dogs, I also like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches quite a lot.

Here's "Moose's" line:

Pitchers IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
Mike Mussina (L,17-9) 5 8 5 5 2 7 0 3.63

BTW: We didn't call him Moose in Bmore, did we? I don't remember that. That's a dumb NY thing right?

i disagree

maybe my memory isn’t what it should be, but i seem to recall mussina taking a below market value contract to stay in baltimore for a few years (which pissed off the union). then, angelos expected him to do it again because his home is in southern pennsylvania and instead he decided to test the free agent market. i don’t blame him.

why should he have any loyalty to us when we didn’t have any loyalty to him? i know that i’ve always appreciated mussina’s time here, especially the 1 hitter he threw against cleveland which was by far the best game i’ve ever watched in person. i root against the yankees as a team every day, but i still hope he wins enough games to get into the hall of fame. he deserves it.

I don't hate him anymore

Maybe in 97 i might’ve thought PA was a good owner or whatever. Now I always side with guys like moose.

and yeah, we always called him moose.

not only do i not hate the guy, i hope he makes the HoF. He deserves it. No joke.

i certainly never called him "moose"

first of all, it’s a painfully-too-obvious moniker. second, it does not accurately as a nickname describe the brainy, small-boned mussina.

moose milligan. now that was a moose.

mussina would have been a rich man either way and b’more would have remained a viable team if he’d made the right choice at that pivotal moment.

he is a traitor and no amount of revisionist history can change it. being wrong and being a jerk is not a zero-sum game. in other words, you can fault angelos and mussina without any logical lapse.

Yes, I should say that, which, I should say that.

by thewaywardO on Sep 14, 2008 11:52 AM EDT   0 recs

As joet stated earlier, Mussina took a discount to stay with us earlier. It was a classy move. Angelos insulted him when he finally hit free agency. It’s 100% Angelos fault he’s a Yankee. I’d love to bring him back over the offseason. We could really use a few “stop-gap” pitchers and I’d think he’d be the perfect candidate.

Also, you may not of ever called him Moose, but just about everyone else did. In fact I remember they use to sell hats with antlers on them outside the stadium.

Lord.

mussina would have been a rich man either way and b’more would have remained a viable team if he’d made the right choice at that pivotal moment.

We’d already stopped being a viable team by the time Mussina left. His last two years were spent on miserable teams with no vision or regard for the future. Then they low-balled him. But we’ve been over this 1000 times.

those two years were dominated by the ripken swan song that went on forever

if we weren’t viable, that is why.

but go ahead …… absolve him in your universe of you must. it makes little difference.

I just don’t get hung up on what baseball players choose to sign with what team unless it’s the Orioles signing Jay Payton.

especially since the yankees

you know, had the better offer. I’d probably have taken it too.

wade boggs
johnny damon

all had the better off too right?

Randy Johnson was traded. So was Alex Rodriguez. Yes to the others.

you can quibble with a list i wrote in five seconds or you can face reality

the yankees are shit team that overbids in an anticompetitive way and players who get sucked in to that are assholes.

Yes, I should say that, which, I should say that.

by thewaywardO on Sep 21, 2008 12:26 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

well, the entirety of MLB is anticompetitive

By law. They have an antitrust exemption. The draft is anticompetitive.

The Yankees are just using their resources how they see fit within the structure of the game.

I’m never going to call a guy who maximizes his earnings potential an asshole for that reason alone.

Also, not all of those contracts worked out. Johnson was forgettable with the yankees. Giambi has been up and down at the plate and a liability in the field. Damon isn’t great. Wade Boggs had one great year and three average ones.

And that doesn’t even take into account guys like Pavano. Or Irabu. Or Irabu Jr. (that japanese pitcher they got last year…forget his name)

Also, they’ve also opened their wallets to keep their own players, like Jeter and Posada, something that other clubs could try if they wanted to.

I just don’t have too much sympathy for a bunch of billionaires who get outspent by another billionaire. Yes, New York gets some advantages from its location. If that bothered other teams that much they’d try to change things. But they won’t, and I can’t fault the yankees for spending.

that's two different arguments though

you can argue that it’s not really fair that the yankees can afford to do more than any other team in mlb and often exercise that ability. i’m not going to disagree with you, i’d prefer to see both a cap and a floor of some sort instituted.

calling out a player for getting “sucked into it” is a totally different argument though. why wouldn’t you get sucked into it? you can sign with the yankees, make more money than with any other team, and virtually assure yourself of playing meaningful games in october in most seasons or you can take less money and sign with a team that might or might not be competitive, because it’s more… honorable? i just don’t understand that logic; these are business decisions, no more, no less.

baseball players aren’t really allowed to be fans once they get drafted because you don’t control where you play for the most part. i’d like to believe that if i were good enough to play, i’d take less money to play for the o’s, but i’ll bet that attitude would change pretty quickly once i got to the business end of the sport.

anyway, mussina isn’t a traitor and he isn’t different from anyone else. let it go. would you seriously be less offended if he signed with the red sox or blue jays?

OR...

I can think you’re sort of childish about this. Honestly if the Yankees want to overpay for a lot of these guys, I don’t give a shit. What am I missing out on, Johnny Damon: Baltimore Oriole?

Because the NFL and NBA have lots of guys that spend their career with one team these days?

I don’t like the salary cap idea, but I wouldn’t have a fit. These are grown men and the sport is not owned by three teams, no matter what “small” market fans pretend.

I would totally root for him.

I hope he gets it also

He’s been so close so many times, he’s a hell of a pitcher, and his career, which seemed about over last year, has been revived this season.

Definitely pulling for him and sorry I'll be on a train from St. Petersburg during the game. Which I don't think'll have wi-fi.
