Gamethread: Birds at Blow Jays 9/17/08

Baltimore Orioles at Toronto Blue Jays, Sep 17, 2008 7:07 PM EDT

I don't remember how to make gamethreads. But this is the first game I've seen in months, so I'm taking a crack at it. It's already 1-0 O's in the first.

Go O's!

On the other hand, Rays drub Sawx 10-3. As I said: Yawn, another series for the Rays over whatstheirname.

Well gang, I finally got the dad-jim visa, so it’s back to the Big Onion tomorrow. Not exactly the happiest time in Russian-American relations, so wish me luck…

Wow, SO sorry I missed this game

Actually, I am sort of sorry to have missed 2632. But I was just too busy getting my politically charged lesbian folk rock on at the Indigo Girls concert.

How was the concert?

I like their latest stuff. Best since All That We Let In.

It was awesome

They played a really good mix of music. Since they didn’t JUST release an album is was a lovely mix of songs from through their career. Pretty much every song that they played I was like “yay I love this one!” but then when it was over I noticed a lot they didn’t play. But then when you think of the fact that they’ve been around for over 20 years I guess that makes sense. They did play Watershed, which always makes me happy because it’s my all time favorite. They said they have a new album coming out in February and they played two songs from it, one Amy song and one Emily song.

Their opening act was Missy Higgins. I’ve never really heard of her before, but I liked her. She played the piano and the guitar and was kinda folksy-bluesy. The show was at the Rams Head Live and she said it was so nice because last time she was in Baltimore she was at “some hot box called Fletchers.” Heh.

one of my favorite lyrics ever:

Every five years or so I look back on my life and I have a good laugh.

I’m currenlty obsessed with their cover of Tangled Up in Blue off of 1,200 Curfews. It’s brilliant. Except for the slow part (“Montague Street”) in the middle.

oh that's exactly how I feel!

I love that cover, but it totally loses steam in the middle. I go through phases with CDs and I feel like I come back to 1200 Curfews quite a bit. I also really love the versions of I Don’t Wanna Know and Closer to Fine. Closer to Fine just plays so much better live that when I do hear the studio version I’m pretty ehh.

Def. better than the studio, but I don’t like how much Amy gets into her “I don’t feel like singing, so I’m just going to shout now” mode towards the end.

I love the studio interview before Power of Two and the cover of Midnight Train to Georgia. And I never liked Chickenman before this album, and now I love it. But I can’t stand the song Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (it’s so clumsy), and for some reason they decided to put it on twice. I mean, I guess they’re trying to help out a fellow songwriter, but 2x crap is still crap to me.

That’s the interview about Emily taking classical guitar lessons for her dad? That’s good. I also enjoyed before Least Complicated when she talks about giving her boyfriend the ring and how it wasn’t cool, and “that was just the beginning….of the rest of my life.”

One negative thing I’ll say about the concert last night was they barely talked at all and one of my favorite things about concerts is when the artist gives some insight into a song or a story about something. Last night was pretty much non-stop music except at the very end when they talked about some global warming charity.

Oh and I hate every version of Chickenman. I hate when they play it at concerts (I’ve probably seen them about 10 times), I hate the studio version, I hate the 1200 Curfews version. That and Pushing The Needle Too Far are probably the only two songs by them I can think of off the top of my head that I just can’t stand.

i'm with you on pushing the needle

every time i hear that song, i’m like, “what the f*ck are you talking about?” it’s the protoypical amy song: furious and somewhat nonsensical. and let me SCREAM SOME MORE while I sing it!

last time i saw them was in LA at the Wiltern last year. there was ZERO chatter between songs andm, like you, i was disappointed.

closer to fine

I just saw Mamma’s Man, a small indie flick, last week. There’s a wonderfully bizarrre scene of a character singing Closer to Fine with the song playing in the background.

Zartan says, "Sign Dan Johnson."

I hadn’t gotten around to 1,200 Curfews, though we have almost all the rest. I’m downloading it now.
