Guthrie's next big pitch off field? 'I don't want to overstep my boundaries,' he says, but others see him as potential leader.
You can argue the decision to bring Guts back for one start on the last day of the season, but you can't argue his value to this team or the content of his character. Quote from Trembley in the article I like:
"When you sign up here, you sign up for all 162 [games], and when things are going bad, you're still there for all 162," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. "And that's what Guthrie is, and I think that's what we're looking for."

HOw hard is this start gonna be on him, really?
Either way, he’s about to take six months off for rest and conditioning. Does the body really care if your last start was in September or August?
I love Guts, and I take his desire to start one last time as a very good thing. Because there are a lot of guys out there who wouldn’t.
But he’s a pitcher, and he’s gonna pitch in a game. Pitchers are REALLY PAMPERED if this is considered a “big deal” at all.

Answer to your question
Guthrie hurt his shoulder; this injury does not need surgery and rather requires rehab + rest. There really is no point at all in aggravating an injury that has occurred recently as opposed to waiting for another couple months until he throws hard again. It’s not like the O’s are competing so why even chance him exacerbating his shoulder?
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

I'm with Baltimo up there, buuuut...
Dude definitely has stereotypical “leadership qualities.” He rules. Plus he was goofy enough to get on board with the Orioles Magic video. There’s nothing about Guthrie I don’t like.
