"I don't see Brian Roberts going anywhere," he said. "Brian Roberts, to me, is a Baltimore Oriole. I've said that all winter. People would say, 'What are your plans with Brian Roberts?' And I'd say, 'He's my leadoff hitter.' And I fully expect that Brian Roberts will be the leadoff hitter on this ballclub for a long time, because of what he means to this team, what he means to this community.
"He is a guy that is a Baltimore Oriole. It's that simple. I don't see him going anywhere. I don't think he wants to go anywhere, which is good for us."

Well, it’s a good thing you’re not the GM Diamond Dave.

It would be such a shame if Roberts is still on this team next year, the guy could bring in so much value. Doesn’t this organization want sustained contention?
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

I think Dave is just being nice
What is he going to say? “Yeah, we’re going to shop him around this winter.” That’s MacPhail’s job.

I think that Dave
Has absolutely no intention of rebuilding this team; a manager cannot wait 3-4 years for a franchise to turn around, he wants to win now.

For a team already short on position players
and not having a ton of prospects outside of pitchers (other than Wieters), can we afford to let Roberts go?
We get no offense from 1st base and short and who wants to count on Mora offensively at 3rd. We don’t have a leadoff hitter waiting in the wings. We don’t have a quality defensive SS either. Markakis and Wieters and perhaps Adam Jones are not enough to carry this team. Add another decent year or two from Huff and Roberts, then we stand a chance of at least being competative. At least if we get some starting pitching.
So I am in the camp that keeps Roberts unless we get an offer too good to turn down.
Speaking of offers – does anyone know how the Cubbies who were the most likely pieces of a Roberts trade did this year?
