Gameday Thread: O's at Red Sox

Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox, Sep 3, 2008 1:35 PM EDT

Hey did you guys know there is a game going on right now? I didn't. But it is! And the O's are winning 1-0, and Lance Cormier is starting. Super!

No time for fancy stuff since I'm at work, but if you want to comment on the game, go to town!

Go O's!

you know what?

Dice-K is genuinely unpleasant to watch pitch. Slow, lots of pitches, lots of guys on base, not a lot of hits. I’d probably love him just fine if he was on my team (the walks would bother me but he doesn’t get hit so he’s not Cabrera) but watching him otherwise can be torture. Today is one of those days even though we’re kicking his ass and he’s nearing 100 pitches in the fourth inning.

Trembley’s adherence to lineup orthodoxy is so irratating.

If Jones is on the bench, why not just knock everyone up a notch rather than putting one of your worst hitters #2?

In reference to Huff making the first out at third:

“You don’t make that play unless you’re already making it before the ball’s in your glove,” Francona said. “He was going to third and he almost got Lowrie out. You don’t see that play all that often, but it’s a game-saver.”

That's my point

You can only come up with “fuck off”. I’ve been convinced for quite a while that you are a dullard. That’s no joke or just flaming in a blog You are incapable of elevating the conversation, and instead drag it to a 9th grade or so level. We’ve all witnessed your intellectual high water mark, and it is rather embarassing. I’ve spent plenty of time teaching and I know a dolt when I encounter one. Sorry I can’t help you elevate yourself. You are self limited and I can’t push you up the bell curve.

I'm afraid

I’ve never told anyone on this site to fuck off. You can use the search feature to investigate that if you’d like. And it’d probably be easier to have an actual discussion if anybody would respond after declaring “Guthrie is clearly better than Lester” or “Pedroia the MVP candidate is delusional” and being refuted by the, like, facts. But yeah keep blaming me because the level of debate on this blog is so wicked high.

by Awesome Mike Awesome on Sep 4, 2008 5:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

dude, why do even come here? Part of the reason is to troll (and I’m not trying to say that in a snarky way, you admitted as much in the last game thread) … but seriously, you feel that the level is conversation is not “wicked high.” I know you’re friends with SC, but I usually just stop going to websites that I don’t get much enjoyment out of even if I know the webmaster.

I get quite a lot of enjoyment out of this site

as a matter of fact. The occasional troll, sure, but that’s no worse than some of the nonsense getxstoked or whoever the f spews out on a daily basis. And yet whenever I have the temerity to perhaps refute some of the Oriole pity party “woe is us, every other team is full of sucky jerks” BS that all too often dominates every single motherhumping thread, it’s “f off,” “punch in the face,” or a simple disappearance. I’m not trolling right now. I want somebody to tell me why Pedroia is not a legitimate MVP candidate. Whoever said it was delusional clearly had nothing beyond that, so somebody else pick it up. I mean, I’ve been waiting three months to find out why Guthrie is clearly better than Lester. And you wonder why I tease you people.

by Awesome Mike Awesome on Sep 4, 2008 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not that anyone cares about this

But I’d like to go on record as saying that I don’t mind AMA, and he’s right you know. Whenever things get nasty with him, someone else usually starts it. In fact, I’m not really sure why he succeeds in pushing everyone’s buttons so much. Maybe because he’s a Red Sox fan and we’re jealous of Red Sox fans? And don’t even jump on me for that anyone, because you know it’s true. If you say not jealous of Red Sox fans, you’re either crazy or a liar because I’d kill to be fan of a team with as much success.

As far as Pedroia as MVP candidate, I think he deserves consideration but if he does win I won’t agree with it. He’s one of the best offensive 2B in the league, but unfortunately the best offensive 2B in the league isn’t at the top of many offensive lists. He has the batting average and he scores a ton of runs, but his slugging and OBP aren’t phenomenal. Above average, but not phenomenal. He has been a major catalyst to his team, which is certainly a consideration but not something you can really measure. And unfortunately I don’t see enough of him/understand defensive stats enough to speak to his defense. How much is that really considered, anyway? If I were going to pick an MVP from the Red Sox, I’d actually probably go with Youkilis over Pedroia.

actually...

just going by VORP, he’s got a decent shot. huffy’s 3rd in the al, pedroia’s 4th. kind of a silly year in the al for 2nd basemen. pedroia’s top of the heap in VORP, then kinsler and roberts are bunched together somewhere in the mid 40s. i was looking up there defensive ratings on hardball times, too, and those three are also closely bunched.

huff may snag a silver slugger for dh, though. really b/w him and milton bradley, i’d think.

I can’t even believe Huff is that high. That’s so silly.

According to baseball prospectus, Kinsler is at 54.9 to Pedroia’s 58.5. B-Rob is down at 46.3

I think if the Indians hadn’t been so godawful this year Grady Sizemore would be in the MVP talks.

Because he trolls occassionally, and to his credit, he admited as much in the last game day thread. When he’s not trolling and just talking shop, I’m fine with AMA. For example, I think Pedroia should be in the MVP discussion along with Quentin.

I agree

that today I wouldn’t put him number one (I’d probably go with Sizemore, but he has no chance in reality) but both in real reality and MVP-voter reality, Pedroia is legit. And his OBP and SLG are pretty freakin great for a 2B, even if they drop down after this huge hot streak.

"Help me help you"... hmmm

Here’s an idea that will help you and I suppose indirectly me. Read some more challenging literature and subsequently raise the caliber of your conversations. It may even help you in life.

You can discuss and refute things without the obscenities you typically sprinkle in your comments. Yeah, people are going to say stupid stuff – this blog encourages spontaneous, stream of consciousness talk, clearly not all well thought out. If it happens to be against a red sox player, you are right there often with some obscenity. It reeks of the same thin-skinned overreaction you accuse of people here. It’s really not difficult to raise your level of conversation and not come across as a cretin. Even if the original post has some type of obscenity, I’m curious to see if you can rise above it. The “he started it” response is juvenile. If you really can’t raise your game, and this is how you typically converse, then all my negative commentary about will continue to be validated, and I’ll occasionally remind you of it (if I bother to follow the thread).

As for some issues you’ve recently been bothered over, if you polled this board about whether Lester is the same caliber as Guthrie, most everyone would agree. Likewise for whether Pedroia and should he get MVP consideration. People have already said so. So quit being so offended over it. It all contributes to your dullard persona. Think of this advice as a start at overcoming it.

by drj on Sep 4, 2008 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Did you search yet

to find just whom I told to fuck off? I’m waiting patiently. I’m not offended by people doubting Lester or Pedroia, and in fact I find it quite humorous that so many (not all) Orioles fans refuse to admit that other players are actually good. A good portion of the posts on this blog (and certainly posts of yours) amount to nothing more than whining about other teams and fans with an inordinate degree of hostility. And yet what’s good for the goose is evidently not good for the gander. Ho hum.

“this blog encourages spontaneous, stream of consciousness talk, clearly not all well thought out

Well that’s certainly true.

As for the rest of that, I hope one day to be as sophisticated as you, who cannot understand a simple simile about closeted gay Republicans. Cretin! Dullard!

Dude, when you troll, people are going to tell you to fuck off. In the poast, I know I’ve been massively pissed about the O’s losing a game and then you’ll come along and post something, “Delightful!” I may not want to physically punch you in face, but if I’m already pissed and then I have to read something like that, I probably want to punch you metaphorically. Like I said above, I don’t mind you when you’re not trolling. If you want to talk shop here, cool, but expect people to say things like fuck off when you intentionally troll.

Uh

Do you not see that I apologized? TWICE? For a post from two years ago? In response to someone other than you? Someone who couldn’t care less? And I’m serious, if it bugged you, I apologize. To me that’s not trolling though. Trolling would be if I regularly posted “birdman is a retard!” or something for no apparent reason. Some mild gloating when your team wins and someone else’s loses seems to me to be a natural part of following sports. Some people seem to understand that and others don’t. Is “f off” a proportional response? To you I guess it is. That’s ok. Again I apologize if that mild gloating bugged you. That’s four times now.

I read the post entitled “Wow” as snarky apology. Not that I care man. No need to apologize. Plus the comment wasn’t marked as a response to Scott. Seriously, dude, I’ve already said I really don’t mind you at all. You’re getting way bent out of shape over this. I just noted that you “occassionally” troll. I’ve provided a couple of examples. And I guess gloating is a natural part of following sports but I think it’s a stretch to say that a natural response to gloating is comments like “go die,” “shut the eff up,” you get the drift.

I don't know what you're talking about

You and I just agreed it is a stretch to tell someone to f off and die for gloating about sports in, really, a fairly harmless manner. Right?

Let me make it simple for you. I’ll admit (and have several times now) that I’ve on occasion stoked the fires. HOWEVER, you must also admit that people here have been unduly vitriolic and hypersensitive in response. (To get back to the original point this stemmed from, remember I was telling drj I’ve never told anyone here to “f off” as he accused me of doing." Are you following me?

Now I’m not staying stop telling me to f off. I don’t really care. I’m just saying it’s ironic and doesn’t exactly make me feel bad for the occasional well-earned gloat. Clear?

And people here do deserve to be trolled. I don’t do it however nearly as much as you’d think.

You and I just agreed it is a stretch to tell someone to f off and die for gloating about sports in, really, a fairly harmless manner. Right?

Ah, dude, this is totally my bad. I screwed up my earlier response. I meant to say that it’s a pretty natural reaction (not a stretch) to say, “go die” “you’re a loser,” etc, when somebody gloats, especially at an fan blog (as oppose to team neutral site).

I’ll admit (and have several times now) that I’ve on occasion stoked the fires. HOWEVER, you must also admit that people here have been unduly vitriolic and hypersensitive in response.

Yeah, this is where we disagree. If you go to a fan board and gloat, vitriolic responses are pretty much the norm. If I went to Sons of Sam Horn, and started to gloat about the O’s (of course, I would need something to gloat about !) after the O’s had just killed the RS, I would pretty much expect, well, the exact type of reaction that you have received. You seem to disagree and find such reactions disrespectful. Cool, whatever. at this point, I don’t care. I’m not looking to get into some long, extended debates about etiquette.

I can spell out the “fuck off” comment in Hardy Boy level language. You see, you said you couldn’t come up with something as clever as “fuck off”. I said that’s about the only thing you usually come up with. I understand now that you took that literally.

It’s very simple in that you quiet often retort (respond to a previous post from another person) with some type of obscenity (curse words) sprinkled in.

That’s quite odd behavior for someone who indicates that there skin may not be so thick.

And also

if it we accept that it is ok for me to be told to fuck off if I were to theoretically (I use that word because the number of times it’s actually happened is far fewer than the institutional memory around here seems to think) taunt or perhaps engage in some light trolling after an Oriole loss — and I do accept this — then is it not then acceptable for me to respond in kind after the umpteenth post about how awful Red Sox fans and players are, punch in the face, yada yada and so on (and you must admit that is seriously overboard — certainly as far overboard as I’ve ever gone — around here). Seems to me that it is. Unless you still believe this is the private Oriole bunker wherein we are protected from super mean opposing fans. That I can’t help you with.

Sure if someone tells you to screw off w/o any provocation, that I think it’s cool for you to respond in kind. This conversation is starting to head into, “Well, he started it!” territory. I don’t care who started it. But if you come here and post something trollish (like yesterday), expect people to react negatively and don’t complain about it. I would like to see non-Oriole fans come here as long as they don’t something trollish. MVP discussion is not trollish. This is trollish, “22 posts? What the hell is that? Come on, man, you know you’re looking to annoy people to when you chanted MVP. I mean it wasn’t, “I think Pedroia has a good chance of winning the MVP,” it seemed more of like, “MVP, suck it!” But it’s a matter of interpretation, only you know of intention of your post. And I’m sure the intention of the post was very noble and merely a way to start a productive and lively dialogue on potential MVP candidates. Overall, I really don’t care. It's not tough

We can start with the more challenging literature. I’m suspecting you stopped somewhere at the “Hardy Boys” level. I suspect you muddled through college, because there are plenty gift degrees a university will grant as long as you keep paying money. The adolescent male mind is full of stupid bravado and can be quite combative for illogical reasons.

We need to get you to a higher level where the mind reaches a self critical state and learns to interact in a mature manner. That’s the traditional role of the liberal arts, and I guarantee you didn’t get their via the “Hardy Boys”. It can be a tough slog for the more dim-witted, but we can at least try to see if you are capable.
