Jayson Stark's Awards: Oriole Mentions

Jayson Stark's awards column is up at ESPN.com, and the Orioles got some love (non-love, too).

  • Daniel Cabrera received a dishonorable mention for American League Cy Yuk.
  • Dennis Sarfate had the #4 injury of the year.
  • The 17-week game with the White Sox and the embarrassing debacle against the A's where we walked everyone and their dog were part of the year's Five Craziest Games.
He also names Dustin Pedroia as the American League MVP, which is just...why bother?

Pedroia is a perfectly viable

MVP choice! I feel like I’ve gone over this before…

I’d go Sizemore, Mauer, Pedroia, Youkilis, Bradley, Morneau, A-Rod, Huff, Hamilton, Quentin I guess. Lee, Halladay, Lester for the CY. Pujols in the NL, who cares about the rest, Berkman up there somewhere, David Wright, who gives a crap. Lincecum, Santana, Webb. Longoria and Soto for ROY.

that seems...

a pretty reasonable projection for how things may play out, too. i can see pujols getting jobbed out of the mvp and it going to utley or something, but, yeah.

Howard will get it or Pujols

Utley had a pretty poor second half.

agreed

Dustin Pedroia is by no means a clear cut MVP, but hes certainly a viable candidate in a really weak field.

Hidden non-love?

Stark sez
"• Uber-efficent Rockies pitcher Aaron Cook threw a nine-inning complete game in just 79 pitches July 5. That’s fewer pitches than 12 different pitchers threw this year without making it out of the third inning. "

Wonder how many of those 12 were ours?

Has there ever been a cooler Oriole than Eddie Murray? I mean, just straight up cool. Like a bad, suave dude. You know what I'm sayin'. COOL. SC 7/24/08

Zero, believe it or not.

Garrett Olson just missed the cut, though.

thanks!

Where do you get stats like that? I wasn’t too lazy to look it up, just too ignorant

Wow! Thanks

I’ve looked career stats up on Baseball Reference for years and never knew that tool was there. Thanks again!

I'd get involved in this Pedroia crap...

…but I made a bet with myself to never communicate directly with AMA again. A bet I intend to win. SC’s absolutely right though about DP-MVP, why bother. It’s fucking ridiculous.

It's nice that

your cowardly little bet precludes you from defending your foolish assertion. Convenient! However with that in mind, I will just go ahead and prove you wrong. To wit: Pedroia is ninth in the MAJOR LEAGUES in VORP, which also puts him third in the American League, a whole 3.3 behind leader A-Rod and .4 behind Grady Sizemore. He’s done this at a crucial defensive position for a playoff team. What’s ridiculous exactly? If you hate him and don’t want him to win, just admit it. He’s as legit an MVP candidate as there can be.

I have him top ten

Maybe top five. I voted Youkilis in the SBN awards so what do I know? Pedroia is a hell of a good player and I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve any consideration, but honestly I probably overly ignore defense (though Youk is a Gold Glover). And there’s A-Rod anyway, and the only reason I didn’t vote for him is he missed a decent chunk of games.

The thing is I kind of got the impression that Stark was more in love with the fact that Pedroia is short than in love with his really good season. Pedroia’s kind of underrated in that his actual ability is ignored at times in favor of his stature. He’s not fucking David Eckstein. Pedroia can really hit.
