The Orioles might be heading toward another September swoon. But they're also on a path to do something that hasn't happened once in the history of the game.
Led by Brian Roberts, the Orioles have three players on pace to hit 50 doubles. On only 10 occasions have three players hit 50 doubles in a single season, let alone on the same team.
Roberts enters Friday with a league-best 47 doubles, while Aubrey Huff has 44 and Nick Markakis has 43. According to Baseball Prospectus, no three teammates have ever hit 50 doubles in one season.

That would totally take away the sting of an 11th consecutive losing season...
I’m sure I’ll regale my grandchildren with stories of this historic team.

A meaningless milestone reached by a meaningless team. I’m not trying to be all catty or anything, but I’m just saying.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

It's a signpost of what could be
if this team were ever to get its act together pitching-wise.
I am haunted by a post of mine back in April, attributing the surprising start, despite a complete lack of hitting, to a team ERA of about 4 or 4.5. Wow did that turn out to be wrong.

I like a doubles stat. It says a lot about the team contribution these guys have made in a down year.
Writing is God's way of showing you how sloppy your thinking is.
