GameThread: Athletics (64-77) @ Orioles (63-77)

Game 1 was cancelled but it looks like the second game of the doubleheader is going to get played.  The Ravens and the Orioles worked out a while back that they weren't going to have the O's play Sunday, September 7 as it would create unnecessary competition and traffic would be a mess.  Because neither team is in the playoff hunt, the game that was postponed may just be cancelled all together.

It's Greg Smith facing Danny Cabrera tonight in this star studded affair as both teams jockey for a higher position in the draft.

Baltimore Orioles
Roberts 2B
Montanez DH
Markakis RF
Hernandez C
Millar 1B
Jones CF
Salazar 3B
Payton LF
Castro SS

Oakland Athletics
Davis CF
Sweeney RF
Suzuki C
Cust DH
Barton 1B
Crosby SS
Hannahan 3B
Cunningham LF
Patterson 2B

Not much to do tonight so I'm listening to Bowie lose while I watch the Orioles lose. Let's see if this thread breaks 25. 1-0 Oakland bottom of the first.

Go O's?

I like the way...

Danny walked the bases loaded before getting any outs.

This has to be

The most pathetic thing I’ve ever seen. There are literally five people at the game and the A’s somehow get upwards of around 13 people to the plate in two innings and score a single run on a sac fly.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

There aren't even any paying fans at the game

And yet the Orioles are still playing Juan Castro, Kevin Millar, Jay Payton and Ramon Hernandez.

What else we got today?

No Huff or Mora, so Salazar’s gotta be at third, Lou is DHing, I’d guess Danny is more comfortable with Ramon behind the plate than Santos, and Luke was due for a day off…oh, and Alex Cintron is more or less the same thing as Juan Castro, just younger and less adept with the glove.

You can thank whoever let Travis Hafner play in the EL playoffs.

Why didn’t the O’s send Albers and Ray there, or keep Aquino around and send him to Bowie…

Because the Orioles at least

Have a tiny strand of class left in their organization, there really isn’t an excuse for rehabbing a guy in the AA playoffs when he was an MVP candidate for a four year stretch in the majors.

True enough.

So in classless moves – will the Yanks send Joba to Trenton during their playoff series?

I wouldn't put it past them

Since Trenton will be playing for the championship, but speaking of NY teams the Mets usually load up Brooklyn so that they make the playoffs every single damn year and if I recall correctly the Dodgers used to do that in the 90’s with one of their teams so as to boost revenues.

We could just bring up the entire Delmarva roster?

Especially the pitchers that combined on the 12-run inning against Hagerstown a couple weeks back.

I don't think that would qualify as pathetic

They would give up 12 runs to major league hitters as minor leaguers, whereas the Orioles would just walk in 8 runs as major leaguers.

giving up 12 runs to the late-season Hagerstown team is even worse, I think.

Every player they had that was worth watching got bumped up to Potomac to help with their playoff run.

At the end of college I gave away my bicycle to an underclassmen. It was rideable but

so beat up I still had the feeling I was somehow ripping the guy off. KInda like your $1.00 tickets.

Good to see the smokin’ Jays closing in on the Yerkees. It’ll be nice to spend the winter right next to an indignant Hank, even though he may be busy several months playing the retarded guy in the movie version of “L.A. Law.”

In other news, Oregon St., for reasons known only to them (and maybe Westie) decided to phone it in against Penn St, getting nipped at the buzzer 45-14. Is losing by 30 to a Big Ten Powerhouse a wake-up call or what?

UW found a much more interesting way to blow a non-confer, scoring the tying TD with 2 seconds left against BYU— but then getting penalized 15 for, um, throwing the football in the air after scoring. No, I’m not making this up. (Perhaps they also shouted “Hooray” at something over 5 decibels— which would, of course, be “excessive.”) So instead of winning the game with a 2-pt. conversion, as they were about to do, they had their 35-yd extra point attempt blocked. Good thing there were fair and balanced refs on hand for that one. "It is a celebration rule that we are required to call," claimed one embarrassed ref, having effectively handed the game to the second best team on the field.

Meanwhile, Stanford’s headlong rush to bowl eligibility was momentarily delayed by AZ St., in a game that was extremely close well into the 2nd quarter, when the Scum Devils realized whom they were playing. Next up for the Robber Barons— at undefeated TCU, which is not as bad a match-up as you might think.

And meanwhiler, both Yahoo Sports and MLB.com are refusing to schedule the Orioles today, the latter claiming in a televised announcement “It’s not the Ravens— it’s the sucktitude.”

Go O’s. Wherever.
