Pitcher Koji Uehara has passed a physical and finalized a two-year, $10 million incentive-laden deal with the Orioles that will make him the first Japan native to play for the club.

Uehara, a 33-year-old right-hander who was an eight-time All-Star in Japan, will be introduced as an Oriole tomorrow at a noon news conference at the Warehouse. From all indications during the past couple of days, it could be one of the most well-attended introductory news conferences for a player in team history.

There were 25 Japanese reporters who awaited Uehara's arrival at Dulles International Airport on Sunday. Several Japanese television crews waited outside of the Warehouse Monday, hoping to catch a glimpse of the pitcher, who spent his entire career with the Yomiuri Giants, Japan's version of the New York Yankees. Uehara spent much of Monday away from Camden Yards, taking his physical.

At this point of the offseason, Uehara (pronounced "oo-eh-ara") is penciled in as the Orioles' No. 2 starter, behind right-hander Jeremy Guthrie. However, Orioles president Andy MacPhail is still hoping to add a starter before pitchers and catchers report next month.

From the Japanese Yankees

To the Baltimore Orioles. And for $10 million. Lucky duck…

Then again, I guess he does get to play in Boston and New York a few times per year.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

you know who wasn't a lucky duck?

ziggy’s duck.

yes, I’m re-watching the wire right now. yes, it’s still awesome.

but ziggy is not

ziggy was the most irritating and worthless and not-believable character in the five seasons of the show.

he was irritating and worthless

i dunno if he was non-believable. The Wire has always had a bit of tragi-comedy going on. Think of Hamsterdam and McNulty’s scheme in Season 5. I think Ziggy fits in with that. He’s a dumbass and an asshole, yes, but I eventually felt kinda sorry for him.

McNulty's scheme in season 5

was the least believable thing in the entire five seasons of the show.

Ziggy was an awful character but he had the accent down pat.

hamsterdam was pretty damn unbelievable too

I dunno. It’s not like I like Ziggy. But I think he was an effective character. Combine a powerful father, a spoiled child, and a bunch of hubris and you get Ziggy (or George W).

At about the episode four mark or so I get really sick of him, then a few episodes later it shifts and his character reveals a little more depth, or something, and I start to appreciate his role.

I couldn't stand that kid

Everything about him ticked me off.
