He Looks Happy
His translator must not have explained to him the current state of the Orioles.

I've never really thought about it
But do they really make that little in Japan? I mean, $10 million for a premiere pitcher is nothing.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

Me either
If this link is correct then he made 4.2 million.

funny...
i was just reading a book about baseball in japan (it’s called you gotta have wa, fwiw) and, granted, it’s written in the late 80s, the disparity seems pretty major. also factoring the relative economics of the time, it’s kind of amazing.

There is quite a difference in the quality of play
So I don’t think the disparity is that amazing. There is a reason that borderline ML’ers go over to Japan. And guys that can’t make it there, go to Korea.

right, but...
the ownership groups are loaded, merchandising is crazy and they draw really well. there’s a lot of money in the game, but it just seems that professional sports over there are operated in a far different fashion than sports over here.

Koji Uehara's 2009 stats:
10W-12L 4.89 ERA 185-210 IP 125 K 45 BB and at least 15 gopher balls!

sounds about right
i would be estatic if he gave us 200 innings and an ERA under 4.50

i would bet...
HR is in thw 22-27 range, but i think your estimate is otherwise pretty spot on.

You’re going way over on IP, I suspect.

Which of the following
would lead you to believe that IP has been overestimated:
1) Lack of IP in Japan over the last two years
2) Koji suffers a significant injury in 09
3) Koji gets shelled out of his mind and off the mound early and often
I could see 1 or 3 being possible, but most of the Japanese pitchers have durability on their side, so 2 would suprise me.

Its about time?
I’ve often wondered why the Orioles haven’t looked into the Far East for Pitching and/or hitting prospects, I mean do the O’s think they’re too good to consider a Japanese player?? All I know is the Orioles suck (i love’em though) and they’re gonna suck for many years too come especially since the Skankees are back to overloading payroll checks and Boston is right on their heels, and now Tampa is up and running and the Blue Gays are better than us too; so why not try EVERY option available Andy-Peter- whomever??? Man I miss the 1970’s when the O’s were nearly always in the Hunt in the AL East, now we are out of it by May 1st………

Now, now
Most year’s it’s May 15th, and some years we make it into mid-June.
As for the Asia question, I think it’s organizational inertia. They hadn’t done it before, it would require an outlay of cash and a new round of hiring in an area where no one in the FO has experience, it’s easier to just keep doing what you’ve been doing – nothing. Same reason it took so long for the O’s to build a Dominican academy, like 25+ other MLB teams had already done.

Actually I think it’s the opposite. They didn’t think they had a shot at signing one, so they never really bothered. They DID send Hideki Matsui an e-mail, though. That’s one of my favorite stories.

This signing is already paying off...
The Orioles have gotten such a significant response for tomorrow’s noon press conference that they moved it to a bigger room on another floor in the warehouse to accommodate the media.
The Pacific Rim has now heard of the Baltimore Orioles & they’ll soon be watching our games. Meaning more Japanese tourists in Charm City & more Japanese players viewing us as a landing spot.

They've watched the O's before
Usually they’ve just seen the O’s be a doormat for the Yankees and Red Sox, though….

I like the idea of
new revenue…as long as it doesn’t result in an increase of PINK O’S HATS!!!!

I remember seeing the Mariners play at OPACY in 2002
and there were a large group of japanese sitting by me. They know about this place, they just choose to stay away.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I read somewhere
That the room was filled with 95% Japanese reporters because everyone else was at Owings Mills. I mean, who in their right mind would go to this 12:00 press conference instead of attending the Wednesday practice for the Ravens? Awkward scheduling by the Orioles.

I understand that we had to break ground eventually
But is this really going to open things up and entice Japanese players to come to Baltimore? I mean, we’re going to stink, and the stadium will struggle to hit 50%, so how is that supposed to awe and inspire the Japanese market?
Boston just seems like an ideal situation for any quality player from the Far East.

I see your point,
and likely you are correct. However, we must at least make an attempt to gain acceptance with players of all nationalities. If we remain stagnant in the world market, expect another decade similar to the last…
