Today's Observations

Did any notice that Adam Jones says he is now up to 235 lbs from 210? That is a huge increase. Sounds like he might just be muscling himself into leftfield. Since this gain is without an increase in bodyfat Jones has dedicated himself to getting stronger. Of course, Jeff Francouer did the same last year with terrible results. Still, I like the dedication and results oriented goals Adam has for himself.

Also today I read that one agent claims the best deal Adam Dunn will get is 5 million. Say what? Of course, its from the Washington Post so it could be a plant by the Nats.

Dunn will get more

But it’ll be something like 2/30. He made 13 last year. Nobody is interested in long term contracts these days, esp for a player with major upsides and downsides. If we didn’t have so many OF I’d like to get him.

Why do you say AJ is muscling his way into LF…trying to be a power hitter, and let Pie patrol the middle?

Mark - Ah, it’s good to be back in Maryland. All the stress of the last few weeks has really made me miss home. There’s no place like home for Christmas, right mom?

Mark’s mom - Boooooo! Booooooo!

Nothing wrong with gaining weight

with the goal of being able to withstand the rigors of a 162 game season. Even if he loses speed, it’s not like speed was what made him such a great center fielder; it was the reads and early jumps he got on the ball. he rarely needed to run down anything.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I will

always remember him falling coming around third early in the year. The camera didn’t catch it and everyone on here was like “what the hell.” then they pan back to third and he’s dusting himself off. Classic. Of course this coming from a guy who fell down swinging in co-ed softball.

doubtful

If Burrell got 8, I cant see Dunn getting much more even on a one year deal. I am betting Dunn signs for no more then 10 and that is in the AL and the only team that really matches up is the Angels. The Angels may feel they might find better players in July and figure to tread water for a bit.

I have read some analysis that peg Dunn’s value between 22-28mil over fours years.

No one appears ready to reach for Dunn that is for sure.

Jeff Francouer fell off because he swings at anything

and his impatient ways were bound to catch up to him.

That is easy to say

but he swung at everything the two years prior and knocked in 100 runs a year

Last year, although marginal, his batting eye improved but he just sucked. He wanted to power up and maybe like Andruw he got pull happy?

Still the kid is only 23. I will gamble on him this year but the Braves lineup is power lite since Andruw and then Tex left.

And wasn’t very good in either year. OPS+ numbers the last three years: 87, 103, 72. Jeff Francoeur getting 100 RBIs two years in a row is yet another case against looking at RBIs when determining value.

I see your point

I guess I like Francoeur more for a fantasy bounceback is probably the way I should have said it…

Adam's still young

Now, if he CONTINUES to add weight, I’d be worried. But is he 23 yet? I wouldn’t be too worried by this – and as others said, it may help him survive the grind of 155+ games better.

Right

And he’ll probably shed pounds over the course of the season as well. It’s actually pretty typical for baseball players to get in a ton of work during the off season because there isn’t much time to bulk up during the campaign.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

I'd never trust a player's weight anyways

I can’t imagine the numbers are any more accurate than +/- 15 lbs or more. I read something about this somewhere but can’t for the life of me remember where or when. I’m not doubting that he has put on weight or anything, I just wouldn’t trust that it’s the full 25 lbs.
