Rotation Discussion

Hello,

I just joined Camden Chat. I've been a Rays fan for the last 3 seasons and attend Yankee games when I'm back home but the Orioles are my college team as I go to JHU. I managed to catch a lot of games on MASN last year and even attended a couple games on Friday discount days. I am happy to learn more about the Orioles.

I don't know how much of the rotation has been discussed on this site, but I wonder which guys you project as the starters. As of now Guthrie and Uehara are the only guys guaranteed rotation spots. I think Liz and Waters would get a spot becuase they have starting experience. Other guys to throw in the mix are Patton, Sarfate, Albers, Hendrickson, Burres, and Pauley. Which players deserve to be in the rotation as of now?

Deserve? None of these clowns deserve to be in the rotation except for Albers and Patton who have been injured. I’m hoping the rotation will go: Guts, Uehara, Albers, Patton, Hendrickson in that order. In reality, I think the rotation will go Guts, Uehara, Hendrickson, Liz, and oh I don’t know, I’ll say Patton.

Jay Gibbons

is another former Long Island Duck. I had to go catch a game when they visited the York Revolution here in PA…his swing still has swiss cheese qualities!!

Minor or Major league contract?? I find it hard to believe that he could break into the bigs again, he is dead as disco at this point.

Rays, Yankees and Orioles?

I think you should hit grad school in Boston and move to Toronto after that!

Frankly, beyond Guthrie our rotation might be worse than Durham’s.

Opening Five: Guthrie, Uehara, Hendrickson, Penn, Hennessy

August 1: Guthrie, Uehara, Penn, Patton, Albers

Our rotation should be much improved in August of 2010, though.

by dfa on Jan 20, 2009 10:41 PM EST reply actions

ok

guthrie, uehara, hennessy (he’s in or doesnt make the team), penn, pauley (pending another signing)

pen-henrickson, sarfate (he’s in or gone), kam, johnson, ray, sherill, walker and one spot depending on 12/13 pitchers, free agent or spring training waiver claim

plug waters or burres into sarfate and hennessy spots if they dont make team, liz and patton start in the minors. Henrickson, Burres and Waters are almost the same damn pitchers which is why I hope only one of them is around.

Is the other Cabrera still around? If so he might be in the pen but iffy.

So Matt Albers

must be visiting Mars this season, cause I didn’t see him in your plan at all

Is the other Cabrera still around?

Fernando Cabrera was DFA’d 9/5/08…IIRC he showed up Trembley or something on mound? It doesn’t look like he’s caught on with another team, though maybe a spring training invite?

He had some middling success

as a starter and then saved 19 games in 2007 but lost his job to the incumbent Wilson late. In 2008 he appears injured to me.

It is probably a mistake to assume him in the rotation now that I reviewed his numbers. He also appears to have below avg stuff as his strikeout rates are quite low. Given injury concerns, below avg velocity and that his stats were accumulated in the NL West I give him a very low shot at making the team. But its quantity over quality, at least at the moment. No harm in seeing what he has.

by sanders833 on Jan 22, 2009 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

I missed him, good pickup

although I think he starts on the DL.

I actually think he might have the same role as last year-long duty and spot starting.

by sanders833 on Jan 21, 2009 11:41 AM EST reply actions

That is unfortunate

that he will be starting on the DL. If that is the case, you a likely correct about his role.

Also, given that Hendrickson, Burres, and Waters are very similar, I wonder if we can just morph them into one ‘super-lefty’ that throws 115 mph and nibbles the corners like Maddux. Hey, its fun to pretend sometimes…

by sickuvitall on Jan 21, 2009 12:54 PM EST reply actions

Sorry to burst your bubble

But I think I read somewhere that the limits of the human body put the fastest fastball at 113 mph. Of course that’s with the current ball, no wind, and almost ignoring spin. Any higher than that, and the human shoulder would rip off.

This guy argued that is why baseball is great… that pitchers can be compared era to era because the potential speed at which they pitch is so close to reality. The only change is the muscle mass of the hitters.

Let me check on the story and provide a link…

How could he be doing his job when he didn't throw me out of the game after the things I called him?

Does anyone....

…have any news on the health status of Albers or Patton? I’d love to plug one of these guys into the rotation and see what they can do. But last I heard both were looking pretty questionable because of their injuries.

by Jonny Pops on Jan 21, 2009 5:27 PM EST reply actions

The consensus at this point

Is that Patton is doing pretty well, and could get a shot coming out of ST. I don’t think Albers will be good to go early on due to the nature of his injury, and when he actually got hurt.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

by Baltimo on Jan 22, 2009 4:30 AM EST up reply actions

I think Patton will have to spend a significant amount of time at AAA. He hasn’t pitched in a year, so I expect him to be rusty. Unless he dominates in ST, I don’t really see him making the team.

Also, what exactly was Albers injury? I thought it was the same as Patton’s yet it seems to me that people are acting as if it is less serious. Albers would could actually be a really good pitcher, but I’m worried he won’t be the same after the injury.

by edsachs1 on Jan 22, 2009 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

I believe Albers

Has a torn labrum as well. Although the injury is still pretty devastating, fans are taking it more lightly now that Patton has come back successfully. It’s easy to forget, though, that there were talks of Troy never coming back, and Albers faces that same grave future.

Yeah, well, we’ll see about that.

I think the injury is less concern about “never coming back” so much as it is about “never being worth a crap again because it’s still a terrible injury even though it’s not the death sentence it used to be.” Which sucks because I was psyched to nab Patton and loved Fat Albers while he was healthy last year.

Yeah, I mean the guy hasn’t even thrown a pitch yet. It’s premature to label his return as successful. And he’ll most likely be back with dminished stuff. Maybe he can adjust, maybe he can’t.

Not to beat a dead horse

It’s a little odd to be talking about a player’s “come back” when he’s pitched a total of 12 and 2/3 ML innings.

I realize it’s essentially talking about him coming back from injury, but even if he is 100% healthy, we don’t exactly know what we have there.

I guess Patton hasn’t “come back” as of yet, but he has consistently improved, and from what I’ve heard, the guy has been going longer, and throwing harder in each sim.

If Troy’s rehab hadn’t been going well, I guarantee that the organization, and those around Patton, wouldn’t be blowing smoke.

Yeah, like Norfolk

Although I guess among the junk pitchers we had last year, he may have been the most succesful. Close second could be Waters. I’m not planning on much from either though.

All reports are suggesting

he’s looking for a multiyear deal. Sure, the fact that he hasn’t gotten as much as a nibble might give the Os a chance to hook him with a one-year, “prove yourself” contract, but its also somewhat telling that, perhaps, people aren’t all that interested in paying him what he and Boras believe he’s worth…or that he’s just not that great. I’m leaning toward not that great.

Just saying.

by Dr Orpheus on Jan 24, 2009 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

I am surprised these guys want multi year

deals in these price ranges. Its might pay to be a gunslinger for a couple of years. Plus Garland probably cost himself 5 mil turning down arbitration and Wolf probably lost money turning down Houston’s offer. Hard to stomach.

The real problem is the O’s dont want to really pay any type of incentive deals like Garcia or Pavano signed. What is the point for the O’s to pay that on a losing team for one year.

I still wouldnt mind getting Wolf for two years at 7-8 million. I just dont think the O’s want to go that high. I think 10 mill for two wont get Wolf or Garland and probably not Looper who I really dont know how he would translate to the AL Beast…

Still if someone would have told you in the season you could sign Garland for 3 @ 8 you would have laughed and even Wolf at 2/15 I wouldnt have thought so. Andy might have to step back and think hard about getting one of these arms unless he just wants to keep waiting for something better that he could acquire inseason. I know the economy is tough but I hope the O’s are looking.

by sanders833 on Jan 24, 2009 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

What is the point for the O’s to pay that on a losing team for one year.

Someone’s gotta pitch, and a few competent pitchers can make the team more attractive than one with Chris Waters fighting for a rotation spot. Tickets must be sold.

by Scott Christ on Jan 25, 2009 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

I know but the O's are going to lose 88-90

more or less with a Wolf or Garland, so AM figures he can save that 7 million for PA’s bottomline. Same applies for a deal with incentives. These guys can help transition a staff and save the bullpen but they arent good for the bottomline.

The O’s need a deal like Mike Hampton’s contract. $2 mil flat, if he wins one or 15.

None of these guys is going to sell tickets though. Lets dont kid ourselves.

I dont think Adam Dunn sells a ticket. Nick and Brian (if) resigning arent selling tickets. They may prevent some from leaving but they wont add incremental sales.

Contending or a marquee signing (Tex) increase ticket sales. Contending tends to last year over year.

by sanders833 on Jan 25, 2009 9:36 PM EST up reply actions

Indeed, plus next year's FA crop...

…is really weak. I’m surprised that some of these remaining free agents who are young enough don’t just take a 1 year deal and take their chances in 12 months against weaker competition and hopefully in a better economic climate. I wonder if the remaining free agents weren’t actually hurt by the Yankees spending all their dough so quickly…

From the Orioles perspective, hopefully we can sign someone that might be traded in July for an interesting piece. It is worth noting that it would be nice to give innings to some guys to see if they can help or not (Penn, Liz, Patton and starting the clock on guys like Hernandez and Bergeson).
