Baltimore Orioles Examiner: Gregg Zaun, the Mitchell Report, and MLB's double standard
Apparently the "no more steroid users on the Orioles" rule was waived for Dempsey's nephew.

ZAUN
"I was trying to rob him. And he took my gun from me. And the gun was full of blanks. And he shot a blank into my eye. And now I cannot see from this eye ever again, the doctors say."
"Well to be honest it sounds like it's all your fault."
I don't buy it
And I’m a huge believer in the Bonds double standard. The Orioles need a catcher. They don’t particularly need a LF or DH, and now the fact is that Bonds hasn’t played for a while.
The Orioles also have BriBob, who was linked to HGH. I mean, each situation has to be different, right?
Could the O’s have used Bonds last year? Yeah, probably. But I don’t think the Zaun signing is some huge sign of hypocrisy or something.
The main point of the article...
…is not so much “We need Bonds” as “double standard.” And that last point stands. People who used steroids to get over the hump to mediocrity are given a free pass, even though they “degraded the sport” just like Bonds, and they screwed over the honest AAAA players who never got their big-league break because they didn’t use PEDs.
Could the O’s have used Bonds last year? Yeah, ... no.
I’m happy the O’s passed on Bonds last year and it has nothing to do with his use of steroids. We didn’t need a 41 year old DH with old-man back and knee problems to hit a handful of home runs while contributing nothing else to the redevelopment of the team.
He puts a few more gawkers in the seats during a rebuilding year in exchange for pissing off the press and killing team morale with his radioactive personality. No thanks.
(and yes, I live in the SF area)
I actually agree with you
I’m just saying that, in theory, Bonds at DH (if he would even be willing to play there) and Huff at first and Millar on the streets would’ve probably been a better team. Like one or two wins would’ve mattered.
But now? There’s no way we have a position for him. I mean, he might still be a better hitter than Luke Scott, but you gotta have infielders and pitchers on the roster, too.
It’s just a dumb sensationalistic article.
sensationalistic?
it’s hardly that. the guy basically points out that ZAUN is lying through his teeth and that no one in the warehouse or the baltimore press seems to give a shit. dude’s hair is not on fire, he’s just laying out some facts.
Who dares to make these accusations
against ZAUN?? ZAUN needs not performance enhancing potions. ZAUN needs only the talent and desire given to ZAUN by the gods. Beware fools, for we all are treading on thin ice…
"...that our flag was still there...OOOOOO say does that star spangled..."
seriously, just what i was thinking as well
don’t piss off ZAUN.
"fuck the Yankees and fuck the Red Sox and all their players and fans and former players and fans and their loved ones and pets as well!" sickuvitall
Dumb
You don’t sign Bonds because he’s a HUGE publicity issue. Because he used steroids? Yeah, and because he used steroids to become the home run king, and also because he’s a mega asshole.
Zaun apparently used the juice, too, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s also a mega asshole, but he didn’t and won’t break any big time records and the O’s aren’t signing him saying THIS IS THE PIECE THAT WILL GIVE US A PENNANT.
Plus, even with Bonds the O’s aren’t going anywhere, so it makes no sense for the O’s to sign him. It only makes sense for a team in the hunt to sign him, and every team in the hunt has weighed the benefits vs. the publicity hit and decided the publicity hit was too big.
Boo hoo not fair. Damn you for having an opinion of a public personality. How dare you think freely and in a way that Jay Trucker of The Baltimore Orioles Examiner disagrees with?

Bonds biggest mistake was that he was an asshole to the press.

You don't sign Bonds
because he costs WAY too much money for what? 3 more wins?
Duck Around - a progressive blog about the Eastern Shore of Maryland. And getting off my lawn.
Doesn't seem to be a market for corner OF/DH anywhere
Or Manny would be signed by now.
You can't fix stupid. Stupid is forever.
