Garrett Olson no longer a Cubbie -- traded to the M's
From ESPN.com
The Chicago Cubs have acquired pitcher Aaron Heilman from the Seattle Mariners for infielder Ronny Cedeno and pitcher Garrett Olson.
Heilman and Olson have already been involved in trades this offseason. The Mariners acquired Heilman as part of a three-team, 12-player trade that sent closer J.J. Putz to the Mets in December.
The Cubs picked up Olson in a deal from the Orioles for outfield prospect Felix Pie on Jan. 18.
When I saw the headline, "Cubs acquire Heilman from M's" I thought, "Who on the Mariners is named Heilman??" I had totally forgotten about the Putz trade. Welcome back to the AL, Garrett. Do me a favor, ok? If you're scheduled to face the O's during the regular season don't wimp out like your new old teammate Erik.

Just for the record, I prefer Olson over Pie.
And I really like the M’s new GM.

The folks and Lookout Landing are very happy to have Olson
Kinda the inverse of the attitude here, no?

I liked the old one more, esp one he made the Bedard trade

I would love to trade MacPhail for Jack Zduriencik.

look its a smart deal
five years of Olson for one year of Heilman. I also remember Olsen’s best game last year just happen to come against…drumroll please…..I am sure the scouts had that in their notes.
I also remember Seattle talking about using Lopez at first so I guess this gives them some options with Cedeno.
If Bedard is back, Seattle has a nice looking rotation. Bedard, Hernandez, Washburn, Morrow, RRS plus Mr. Boat Anchor.

As a mariners fan, I understand your sentiment, haha.
It’s painful now to see how high Tillman is rated as a prospect, and the jact that AJ will be a valuable regular in CF for years to come.

Bavasi
was nepotism defined.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

or perhaps nepotism personified?
Or maybe nepotism in its purest, unfiltered form….

Whatever
let’s just say his last name did alot for him. ’Course you could also make that case with MacPhail, but Macphail has actually won so…..

So...
..to the Cubs, Pie is = or less than Heilman?
Ooof.
by Jonny Pops on Jan 28, 2009 2:29 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
yep
The Cubs traded Pie, Cedeno and Ceda for one year of Gregg and Heilman. Think the Cubs are all in this year?
Rich Hill cant be far behind. We have to have some bling we can move just to find out. Heck, make him a lefty specialist if worse comes to worse.

U.S.S. Mariner loves the trade.
In 132 innings for Baltimore last year, Olson had a 5.13 FIP – way, way lower than his 6.65 ERA. Just like we talked about with Silva, there’s a huge regression to the mean coming, and considering his minor league track record, quite a bit of upside beyond that.
According to Fangraphs, Olson’s CHONE projection is pretty good in 2009 (4.88 ERA). ZiPS doesn’t like Olson very much (78 ERA+), but ZiPS didn’t do so hot in projecting O’s pitchers in 2008.

I tell you what
Heilman is probably pitching a fit right about now. This guy has wanted to start for the last few years and probably figured this was his chance. Unless I am missing something, he isnt starting in Chicago, he isnt closing. He is right back in his old role, blowing games in the eighth inning…so Cub fans should be running him out of town just before he is traded in July….

I just read
something where he might start…I dont see Sweet Lou with a lot of patience here but who knows. I guess him and Sean Marshall can battle it out and if Heilman doesnt work out he just moves back to the pen.
The big thing about Heilman is his strikeout rate stayed up but his walk rate zoomed. Maybe leaving NY will help and he could really rebound. Still, it wont take much to bring up those bad memories…

To be fair
The guys at USSMariner like Olson better than Heilman, but like Pie over both of them. Also, I’ll have to check, but I’m pretty sure I remember Pie and Cedeno being the key pieces to the rumored Roberts trade last year. If this is the case, the Cubbies got a whole lot less for them this year. Cedeno and Pie for Heilman. That’s an awful trade.

And yet, we still have Roberts
who will walk away at the end of this year. So, who did lose the most by not making that trade?

I'd rather have draft picks than Heilman.

qualify that - I'd rather have draft picks than Heilman for 2 years.
where the fuck are we going to be in 2 years?

Hopefully on the way up
2011 is the year to be good, yes? Arrieta, Tillman, Matusz, et.al. are supposed to be ready to go in 2011.

Type A’s are the top 20% at their position. I don’t know exactly how that’s determined or how many years are considered, but Jason Varitek is a type A; so I think BRob would have to have one helluva bad year to move down to a type B (which still gets us a supplemental).

how about opportunity cost
meaning if Roberts was batting leadoff in the playoffs last year instead of whiff machine Soriano who knows….
