Tex Says, "the Yankees were always the top [choice]."

Blame the wife! Turncoat! Turncoat!

I know I'm beating a dead horse into the ground here, but this is the last of it from me on the Tex issue, just some good insight into the bargaining process before the holidays.

According to the Boston Globe, Tex's wife, Leigh, convinced him the Yanks were the way to go:

"Two weeks before Christmas, I talked to [my wife] Leigh about it again, and we kind of decided that, hey, the Yankees are where we want to be. Cash [Brian Cashman] might want to give Leigh a hug, because when I asked her during the process, 'Where should I go, where should I go?,' she'd always say, 'I just want you to be happy.' Finally she said, 'I want you to be a Yankee,' and it was a done deal."

But we can't let him scapegoat her that much, because the 'life-long Orioles fan' also laid down this gem for the NYY glitterati:

"My dad would take me to O's games and I'd wear a Yankees hat, which wasn't too safe in Baltimore back in the '80s. But it was worth it. There's something about being a Yankee, no where you are there are Yankees fans, and I'm glad to be a Yankee today."

Oh, it continues: "In my mind, the Yankees were always the top."

The best quote from Boras: "Obviously, in my business, you're either called a shopper or a puffer; one of the two, you're going to be labeled with. "

I think it's safe to call him both.

UPDATE: Revised so you can witness Leigh Teixeira's input on the matter.

If he signed w/ the Sox...

…then they would have “always been the top choice”, if he signed w/ the Nats or O’s, it would’ve been “I got some offers from places like Boston and New York, but ultimately, Leigh told me she wanted me to go back home…that sealed it for me right there. Even though I live in Texas”

it’s all BS, I hate these overly image-conscious ballplayers

He rooted for the yankees back when they sucked, and while his family were diehard season ticket O’s fans? Shyeah, right.

He would have said the same thing about a red sox hat if he’d signed with Boston.

Still, he’s a phony douche.

LOTS of BS revisionist history and PC sound bites in his press conference. I think he would have loved to come to BAL if we were any good. Otherwise, he would have only came here if we outbidded everyone by a good $20 to $30M.

heh heh
What Teixeira said: “I would go to Orioles games … and I would wear a Yankees hat. Back in the ‘80s and ’90s, that wasn’t a safe thing to do in Baltimore.”

What Teixeira meant: “Other things that were unsafe to do in Baltimore in the ’80s and ’90s: wearing an Orioles hat, wearing no hat, wearing hair, wearing a face.”

What Teixeira said:“This [free-agency] process was confusing at times.”

What Teixeira meant: “I couldn’t wrap my head around it. I was like, ‘How many commas are in this dollar figure? Wait, this number doesn’t include decimals? $180 million? I don’t know whether I can comprehend that much money! What would it look like? Could I roll around naked in it? Could I swim in a huge silo full of gold bullion like Scrooge McDuck? Or would diving into it like he did be quite painful? Can I use twenties to light cigars? Or would that be gauche? Should I use hundreds instead?”

What Teixeira said: “Finally [my wife] said, ‘I want you to be a Yankee.’ That’s when it was done. Once we got the contract figured out, it was a no-brainer to me.”

What Teixeira meant: “Yeah, once the Yankees offered me $180 million, I was more than happy to go along with my wife’s wishes. Just yesterday, she said, ‘Mark, I want you to take the trash out.’ And I will, just as soon as she pays me $180 million.”

What Teixeira said: “I think everyone is going to miss Yankee Stadium, but the new Yankee Stadium is going to create some memories that we’ll all remember for a long time.”

What Teixeira meant: “A Yankees fan came up to me today and said, ’I’m so excited that we signed you. I bought five tickets for my family for Opening Day, and it maxed out my $12,000-limit credit card. I’ll have to pay for that for a long time.’ It’s neat to think that he’ll remember that day for the next 15 years or so every month when his bill arrives.”

What Teixeira said: “It took Scott [Boras] and I probably a month just to narrow it down to five teams that we would want to negotiate with.”

What Teixeira meant: “It was weird. We discovered there were 25 teams that decided they didn’t want to commit $22.5 million per season to me for eight years in this economy. So we’re like, ‘Well, if that’s how you are going to be, you are not someone we want to negotiate with. So there.’”

Wow!

I could have cared less about him signing with the Yankees before, but I really hate this dude now. He’s totally lying and a jerk.

Also, it was never “unsafe” to wear a Yankees hat at either Memorial Stadium or Camden Yards. That’s just total B.S. Wearing an Oriole hat at Yankee Stadium on the other hand…

From now on however, I predict it will be unsafe to wear a Mark Teixeira jersey in Baltimore, especially if you happen to be Mark Teixeira.

Mark Teixeira's married to Alexis Bledel?

Not that I’m a fan of Alexis Bledel, or any other show on the CW.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Tex: .308 AVG / .410 OBP / .552 SLG / 33 HR / 121 RBI (cumulative totals for the year)

Huff: .304 AVG / .360 OBP / .552 SLG / 32 HR / 108 RBI

Actually, pretty close, until you get to OBP, where Tex has a CLEAR advantage. Also, the RBIs, but that might be more a function of who hit in what lineup, yes?

A Braves Fan's Opinion

He’s not worth the money. He’s good but not clutch. Starts the year slow, doesn’t play well in cold weather. So it takes him forever to get going. When he does, look out but it might not be until July.

I actually saw him play more in college when he was at GT. I only saw him play 3rd in college. He was terrible. Texas did the right thing by moving him to 1st.

For some reason, the Orioles were always my American League team…when are you going to bring back the Jim Palmer hats?
