Video on Koji Uehara-1/2 pitches are hangers!
I think that its great to see the the O's go after a Japanese pitcher, but perhaps they should have gone after Kenshin Kawakami.
According to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TausE4nhypk, half of Koji's pitches are right over the plate. I did some community service one year for a Giants scouting program, and this guy doesn't fit the "movement" catagory. He's controlled, yes, but the pitches are right down broadway.
He'll have to make major adjustments to keep his ERA under 5.00 at the MLB level.

I agree
I think Kawakami would have been a better option, but who knows. Perhaps Uehara sits down with Kranwitch, humbled by his demotion, and works on improving.
Whatever, he’s better than Cabrera, so why complain about it?

He doesn’t have a funky delivery either like Nomo or Okijama which could prevent hitters from picking up the ball properly upon release.

He strikes out some Major Leaguers in that video, including Bonds
Parts of the video are from a 2002 barnstorming series where Uehara truck out Bonds three times and Giambi twice. Too bad that was seven years ago…

I was under the impression
that the O’s haven’t stopped pursuing Kawakami, even with this signing. Is this position incorrect to the best of anyone’s knowledge?

It would still probably be a good idea...
….if for no other reason, than to make sure the Japanese players don’t feel so isolated playing here.
There really is no Japanese community to speak of in Baltimore.

Pretty sizable Korean community in Howard County
Maybe we should pursue some Korean League guys?

i actually agree
there is a large and fairly prosperous Korean and Korean-American community in Northern VA. Possibly signing a Korean player or two, or making efforts in that direction, might steal some fans from the Nats.
Probably not…but you’d think it’d be the kind of angle Petey would search for, just to stick it to the Nats

Uh, dude...
read up on historical relations between Japan and Korea. Let’s just say, in the words of Keith Jackson…

eh, I wasn't talking
in terms of making Uehara feel welcome. That’d be silly, and even if I didn’t know of the troubled history between Korea and Japan (I know some) to assume that getting “any other Asian guy” to make Uehara feel welcome would be, well..dumb.
I just meant that, with a lot of Korean and Korean-American families within the reach of MASN it wouldn’t be dumb to reach out to that audience.

I would rather have Chan Ho Park than this Uehara clown.

If there's a Korean pitcher that can help us...
sign him. I’m glad to see the O’s start operating in Japan. No sense not making use of all possible sources of talent.

I always
employ a “no asian pitcher” policy when drafting my fantasy baseball team. I’m biased against asians or anything but asian pitchers usually end up sucking ass so I just steer clear. Ichiro? You bet! Hideki Matsui a few years ago? Sure. Chan Ho Park? Pass.

irrelevant
His performance this year is largely irrelevant. His sole function is to allow the O’s to get through the year without rushing the youngsters to the majors. So long as he does not walk batters, and he appears to have excellent control, he will be in the rotation. A good move on the part of AM. Now, please trade BR and add a few more prospects.

yeah you think
Andy has youtube as mandatory for scouting 101…
Look, this signing is everything we asked for so far. Japanese intro and any live body better then what we had. So lets give it a chance.

Judging by your top 20 list I’m not putting too much stock in your youtube scouting take on Uehara.

It's actually a top 10 list FYI
but I put deep thought into that list, and I personally, since I only posted it on minorleagueball, don’t see why it’s being talked about so negatively. I mean, is it that bad?
I know I had to argue the Tillman case, but I have my own opinions.

nice job on the list's
No insult but I like your confidence when comparing Weiters too Price. I think he will prove to be a steal for us as well. In the O’s sake let’s just hope he becomes at least half as valuable as Price is too the Ray’s. As far as this pitcher goes I like his stuff early on in the video but it seems too me that he gets a little sloppy towards the end and shows signs of weakness in his technique by hanging the ball. I’m worried about his late game composure but as long as we still have a solid set up guy for next year along with Sherril too close out games it shouldn’t be too much of an issue but I’m sure that problem will worked on with Kranitz.

I love it...
… how people judge a pitcher they have only ever seen on a youtube video. He works with a fastball and forkball as his main pitches. Ever tried to hit a true forkball? I have, and it is like trying to hit a fast knuckleball.
No one is saying this guy is any better than a #4 or #5 pitcher but they say if he puts it together he could be a #3, but isn’t everyone psyched we have a pitcher who will not walk every other batter he faces and has a reputation for actually pitching more than 3.1 Innings?
