GameThread: Sunday's Triple Header

Postseason_logo_2009_medium_medium_medium_medium

The Dodgers completed a three game sweep of the Cardinals last night to advance to the ALCS. Camden Chat favorite George Sherrill appeared in all three games, pitching 2.1 innings and earning 1 win. Now the Dodgers will sit tight until the NLCS starts on Thursday.

Angels @ Red Sox - 12:07 PM (Angels lead 2-0)
The Angels hope to complete a sweep of their own and are sending Scott Kazmir to get the job done. Kazmir made six starts for the Angels after being traded and was outstanding for them. He also has a good history against the Red Sox, with a career 3.59 ERA against them in 23 starts. He faced them twice in 2009 while with the Rays, allowing a total of 4 runs and 13 hits and earning two wins. The Angels have to feel pretty good about their chances. The Red Sox will counter with Clay Buchholz. He improved quite a bit this year but his last two starts of the year were disasters. If the Red Sox can't get their bats going the Angels will finally be able to beat them in the postseason.

Yankees @ Twins - 7:07 PM (Yankees lead 2-0)
Carl Pavano is starting for the Twins. I don't think Carl Pavano will pitch well enough to shut down the Yankees, but it would be sort of a hoot if he did. And I certainly had no idea what I was talking about when it came to Vicente Padilla so what do I know. The Twins are dead in the water, but it'd be nice for their fans if they could see a win.

Phillies @ Rockies - 10:07 PM (Series tied 1-1)
The Phillies and Rockies are a day behind schedule thanks to the snow. J.A. Happ makes the start for the Phillies and Jason Hammel takes the mound for the Rockies. This is the series I care about least of all of them. I don't even care one bit who wins.

If there is a better way to win the series than coming back against papelbon I don’t know what it is.

I think Kevin Youkilis may be a Patriots head coach

There was a guy with that exact same “This guy looks like he works on a ship” beard standing next to Bill Belichick for most of the game. Really bizarre stuff.

That's depressing

I just heard the announcer say that Jerry Hairston, Jr., who is making his first postseason appearance, was one of 14 Major Leaguers with over 1000 games who haven’t been in a post season.

Remember that Jerry Hairston was shipped out to make room for Brian Roberts (by the way, how fucked up was it that Roberts had to sit around for a couple of years because they O’s weren’t sure he was a better player than Hairston?) and Hairston gets to the playoffs first. Sometimes life isn’t fair.

by yurizanow on Oct 11, 2009 10:24 PM EDT reply actions

thats for sure

we just have to be satisfied knowing that brian roberts is the better man

by twistedlogic on Oct 11, 2009 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't believe that was apparent earlier

They wasted a couple years of his career mulling that one over.

by yurizanow on Oct 12, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I sure B-Rob is ok

having earned a crapload more money that Hairston.

by daveh873 on Oct 12, 2009 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s because Roberts was considered a fringy prospect at the time. He’s turned out to be a much better player than projected.

Also, his dad isn't a former Major Leaguer

It seems that a lot of baseball people think thank kind of thing is a big deal.

From what I understand, that’s part of why Brandon Fahey was allowed to waste a roster space for several years.

by yurizanow on Oct 12, 2009 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd argue its at least an advantage

1) you have a pretty good idea the genes are there, especially if they come from a family of baseball players, and 2) its likely the player started developing at a much earlier age the sort of natural baseball instincts that people seem to love to rave about, having grown up much closer to the game than most people have an opportunity to.

by kba26 on Oct 12, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

The Twins are out and the playoffs are completely over, at least for me.

I watched a bit of the Angels (can’t help but stumble across it here in NE). I kept thinking to myself “damn, the Orioles seem like light years away from that”.
