Jason Berken Rookie Review
Just posted to my blog, wanted to share here.
Jason Berken started off the season pitching exceptionally well in his first two games. Berken excited Orioles’ fans including myself, he got us thinking we had a solid pitcher coming up to the big leagues. Boy, did Orioles fans come to a conclusion to quickly, and Berken did the opposite of pitch well after those first two games.
May was his first month on the Orioles and those were his first two games where he pitched well. In his MLB debut on May 26th against the Toronto Blue Jays he pitched 5 innings, allowing three runs and picked up the win. His next start on May 31st against the Detroit Tigers was a very good performance. He pitched seven innings allowing just one run, but picked up the loss. Hey! Orioles fans, we got a solid pitcher here!
Solid is not even close to describing Berken’s performance for June, and the rest of the season (besides a few decent starts down the road). His June ERA was a bloated 8.51. Berken struggled with so many issues, he did not pitch deep into games, and could not keep the ball down in the zone. I was able to see him pitch on June 18th against the Mets. That was a decent game for him considering he pitched 6.2 innings, but he did allow four runs.
Berken’s pitching in July was bad, but looked good compared to Berken’s month of June. Trying to find some positive from Berken was hard, but good news was Berken only registered three losses in July compared to four in June! Hey, at least he was showing improvement! He lowered his monthly ERA to (5.88) compared to that ugly 8.51 ERA in July.
Berken unbelievably, was able to pick up three wins in August. He did not pitch that badly in those three wins, but his collective month ERA for August was 6.59. Berken also had possibly his worst start of the season pitching just 1.1 innings against the Red Sox giving up six earned runs. His ERA does look better for the month without that ugly start, going down to 4.98.
I do not think I am going to even write about the last month of Berken’s season. He allowed almost double the amount of hits (41) than innings he pitched (23.2) in September. He even got lucky and picked up a win, even though he gave up five runs. He made one October start, giving up four runs in 5 innings.
Overall, Berken’s season was a disaster. He did make a few average starts, but none of them were nice deep starts. He allowed 2 runs or less in nine games this season. But, he only made 3 quality starts. This shows how he did not pitch deep into games and mostly pitched around 5 innings in his starts (his average starts was 4.98 innings). Next season I expect to see Berken coming out of the bullpen.

long reliever type?
Or not good enough for that?

Next season, he won't be an Oriole
We need to thank him for eating innings this season. Someone had to pitch. BUT, Jason is not anything like a MLB pitcher. He might be decent at AAA, next year, but he is not worthy of a spot on the 40 man roster. His ERA proves he is batting practice. I would much rather try another young pitcher in the long relief mode, next year. Hell, bring up Patton instead, or Britton. Just not Berken.

Why would you do that
Neither Britton nor Patton are ready for the majors, plus they are both potential starters. Jason Berken has talent, just not enough to sustain a starting pitching career. That’s what kind of pitchers go to the bullpen.

I agree on Britton
He isn’t ready and needs a good year at AA Bowie. Patton, however, was in the majors in Houston before he got hurt. He doesn’t need more “seasoning”, he just needs to fully recover from his surgery (build strength?). I think Patton desrves a try in the spring. We are talking about long relief here, not the #5 starter. He might make a good lefty reliever if he can’t start anymore. Besides, isn’t Hendrickson a free agent?
Anyway, the subject is Berken. If we don’t include him in a trade this winter, I say put him in Norfolk to improve his pitching. He did not impress me at all last year. Too many hits and runs allowed.

He's still young.
He has plus stuff, just really sucked at executing. If his stuff was not good enough for the big leagues that would be one thing. But I see no reason to give up on him because his location and change of speeds was awful. That’s something that can be learned. That being said, I don’t want him learning it while starting for the O’s every fifth day.

What's the big
deal with putting a young arm in the pen before moving them into the rotation?

I don't think it's a big deal
But I’d rather it happen because a pitcher is ready but there isn’t a spot for him in the rotation. If Britton is ready to pitch in the majors and can’t crack the rotation, then by all means put him out there. But if he’s not ready and you’re just looking for someone to go there instead of Berken it’s a bad idea.
As for Patton (responding to fudd above, I’m too lazy for multiple replies) he did pitch in the majors but that was before his surgery. He was great in the first part of the year and fell apart in AAA. I’d like to know how much of that is the fact he was worn out because he’s building his strength and how much is maybe he has things to work on. I’d just rather that happen at AAA.

Gotcha
I read it more starer or nothing. I agree that when he’s ready he needs to be pitching with the big club regardless of role to begin with.
What’s Duchsherererererererer’s problem? I wouldn’t mind him on the cheap. I kinda like Sheets in a low risk / high reward deal but I think Texas signs him.

I can see that
I said “plus they are both potential starters.” I meant that as opposed to someone in the minors who has already proven that they can’t start. Not that it’s a better practice to promote those guy when they aren’t ready either, but those who could end up as valuable starters definitely shouldn’t be rushed to fill the bullpen, whereas those guys could be an option.
I really like Justin Duchscherer. He was money as a starter in 2008 and good as a reliever before that, so he could fit in anywhere. I know the O’s historically shy away from injured pitchers, but he could be a great pickup.

Maybe
a last ditch effort at long relief. I think that may be about all for Berken. Even by rookie standards he was bad.

Yeah, and
I’d rather eat a lukewarm hot pocket than one that is so hot it burns my mouth. But in the end, I’m still putting a hot pocket in mouth.
Hoooot pocket!
