I'm not sure
if anyone saw, but over at Baseball America the Orioles’ 2009 Rule IV draft was recapped (but you have to pay to see it). Overall we got a solid but not extraordinary evaluation with good marks for Tyler Townsend, Matt Hobgood, Ryan Berry, Mychal Givens, Michael Ohlman, and Cam Coffey.

I went to leave this morning and my car wouldn’t start. Oops!
Not that I don’t love spending time in NJ, but I like to be here by choice :)
Dave I saw a guy at the Giants game last night in an Orioles hat. If I hadn’t known you weren’t there I would have wondered if it was you. And then after the game I saw another guy in an O’s hat, but he was also in a Cardinals jersey.

Thats crazy
I dont think ive seen 2 guys in O’s hats here in the past 6 months and you see 2 in a day. I got back from Baltimore around 7 but unfortunately (maybe fortunately actually…) didnt have tickets or I’d have been there. At least it was an entertaining game for you.
I'm sure this has been asked and answered somewhere...
but how did you become an Orioles fan, Dave?
by NewYorkOriole on Oct 26, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions
I've always hated all NY teams
I know, people think that should mean I shouldnt be a Giants fan, but they have played in NJ since ive been alive. No one in my family was ever a sports fan, so I was left to find my own teams. If NJ has a team in the sport, i’ll root for my home team (as I do with the Giants, Devils, and Rutgers), but baseball was up for grabs. I mean, ive never lived in NY, so why the hell am I expected to root for one of their teams?
My stepdad used to work with the FAA and another independant co inspecting and disassembling/reassembling helicopters in various places, including Dundalk, so we got to travel to Baltimore and stay in the inner harbor for free. I remember the first time I went the Sawx were in town. I was amazed how passionate the whole town was for the O’s (this was pre-Ravens, btw) and was shocked to see the O’s fans treating fans of another team with class, instead of spitting at them and trying to fight them like Yankees fans always did. The facts that it was 1992 and Camden had just been opened, they were a rival of the Yankees, and that I discovered the class act that is Cal Ripken at that point sealed the deal. I been an O’s fan ever since.
sounds like my explanation
on why i don’t root for the caps and wizards

not just the fans
the whole city was orange and black. there were no ravens and camden yards had just opened, so the whole city was Orioles based. I found it amazing that a city could be so passionate about a team and still be classy and friendly ta boot. That just doesnt happen up here.

I dunno
I have no problems with the highways here, but ive lived here all my life. People think “jug-handles” are stupid, but I go to other states where you’re supposed to make a U-turn into on coming traffic and I cant help but think how many stupid accidents that must lead to. Guess its just about where you grew up.
Oh, and about Jersey city. Just dont go to Jersey city. Really. There’s no reason to. Ive been there maybe 6 times in my life. It sucks.
Ha
Yeah Jersey City is pretty bad. The rest of Jersey is ok, espcially as you get more westward – those funny left turn ‘jug-handles’ are crazy, though they make sense…..just different.

It took me so long to get used to someone pumping my gas
I spent a month in NJ for work back in 2002 and by the time I left I was spoiled by not having to get out of my car, where when I got there it made me uncomfortable. But getting gas on the turnpike is AWFUL. Even if I have 1/2 to 3/4 of a tank I still fill up before I get on the tnpk just so I don’t have to sit in the lines. It’s just as quick as pumping your own if you stop at a regular neighborhood station. Of course if you’re only in NJ driving from one state to the next that’s obviously not an option.

It looked pretty...
My family went to Wildwood/Long Beach Island a few years in a row. We used to go to Rehoboth or Ocean City but we switched to NJ to better accomodate my NY relatives. I was very upset by the switch. And I used to be pissed that we couldn’t afford to go to Cape May and had to go instead to its gross slimy cousin. This year we went back to Ocean City though :)
I love New Jersey
I love the towns that have their main streets and how historical it all feels, and how there is a really nice sense of community among the people that have been there for so long. The traffic/turnpike/parkway/tolls are annoying, but once you get away from that and into the actual places where people live it’s quite lovely.
Some Day, Matt Wieters Will Make The Cooperstown Crowd Laugh By Talking About The Time He Batted Behind Melvin Mora And Luke Scott. -Keith Law via Matt Wieters Facts
Ugh....
Can’t say I agree. I haven’t been a fan of any of the towns my friends from college (I went to Penn, so lots of Jersey there) are from. I value diversity and the neighborhoods I’ve visited in NJ have zero.
NJ is heavily segregated
at least in most areas. I grew up in a town that was almost all white, and then there are areas that are almost all african american/hispanic. I currently live in Hackensack, though, which is extremely diverse. I love my hometown though. Its basically on top of a mountain surrounded by woods and lakes. Its like living in the country but you’re only 30 minutes from everything you could ever want.
Even within the whites
The places I’ve spent any serious time were pretty segregated – Jews in one set of neighborhoods, Italians in another, etc.
Your town sounds very pretty though.
I live in NW Jersey
and it’s really pleasant here. I just moved to Hackettstown (near the Delaware Water Gap) about two years ago from Ithaca, NY. At least I don’t have to shovel the weather, here. Townfolk are ok, but majority are Yankee fans. At least most I’ve met are knowledgeable baseball fans.
Hobgood
As the number 4 or 5 choice in last year’s draft, Hobgood should get a great report. Nobody but us seems to be blown away by this kid, however.
I don't think that that's true
If he had fallen down to the Yankees (and I saw a couple of mock drafts where they took him), you’d be hearing nothing but praise for him. I really don’t think the difference in talent and risk between any high school pitcher in this year’s draft is anything except negligible at this point, and I don’t have any problem with taking a high school pitcher, so I don’t get the at-times-amusingly-over-the-top anger over Hobgood.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
Think about Tony Sanchez
Also considered something of an overdraft at 1:4, Sanchez also signed quickly and then proceeded to put up a .948 OPS at catcher in the NY-Penn League, Sally League, and Carolina League. His reports haven’t been outstanding either.
In part, this is anchoring bias; Baseball America is unwilling to quickly dismiss their rankings of the draft prospects from before the draft. But Hobgood didn’t have outstanding results in Bluefield that would lead the evaluators at BA to question their pre-draft work, and they haven’t seen the results in instructionals that lead O’s officials to suggest that he will be ready for Delmarva in 2010, while odds are that at least one of Matzek, Miller, and Turner won’t be in full-season ball fresh out of high school. Less than ten of this year’s picks will make the top 100 prospects lists in any case.
But you should expect people like BA to try to justify their earlier expressed opinions. If Hobgood had been taken 15-20, they would be talking about what a steal he was, and how he’s just a tick below the premier high school arms. But since he was taken higher than they felt he should be, they have to question the choice to demonstrate faith in their ability to evaluate talent.
To be 100% fair
They mentioned him as perhaps a money-based decision, but were quick to remark that the Orioles used whatever money they saved on him later on in getting Givens, Ohlman, Berry, and Coffey. Which is pretty fair. And since there were really only two slam-dunk, Matt Wieters or Brian Matusz-esque talents available at the top of the draft (Strasburg and Ackley), and neither were available to the Orioles, I – and BA – don’t really have a problem with how they went about using this draft.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
I don't have a problem with it either....
…just explaining that in all likelihood, BA would sound blown away by Hobgood if he was taken in the 15-20 range, but won’t sound blown away about him because he was taken at 5.
I think the O’s had a very nice draft, and in Hobgood, Givens, Townsend, Henry, Tolliver, Wirsch, Berry, Cowan, Ohlman, Coffey, Hoppy and Webb we brought in twice as many players with real potential than we did in the 08 draft. Signing Devin Harris would have made a big difference as he would have had the best power potential out of our entire class, but it is interesting to see how the O’s drafted and the prospects they picked up in the Sherrill deal fit into a player development philosophy. There was a big emphasis, in my opinion, in the acquisition of players with strong work ethics and character – Bell, Hobgood, Coffey, and Berry in particular.
My one area of concern is in the bats we are drafting and developing, particularly with regard to power. Of last year’s crop, Avery, Hoes, Miclat and Hudson are all players whose power tools are questionable at best (and nonexistent in the case of Miclat and Hudson). Givens and Webb are also hitters without much power projection but with plus speed, Ohlman’s bat is plus for a catcher but probably not above average elsewhere. Which gives us Townsend as our best power prospect since Rowell (not counting Wieters, of course) and Townsend didn’t show much in Aberdeen. Taken in isolation, none of these things are a cause for concern. But the trend of deemphasizing power in the draft, the failure to sign the power prospects drafted, and the low success rate of power prospects drafted by the O’s in combination gives me a measure of pause. I’m happy with this draft, but I aim to keep an eye on that trend going forward.
BA would sound blown away by Hobgood if he was taken in the 15-20 range, but won’t sound blown away about him because he was taken at 5.
Of course. Baseball pundits typically assign value in relation to draft position. Hobgood was a bit of an overdraft. There was better talent on the board. Matzek would have been a great pick especially since he was bluffing on his bonus demands. I would have even preferred Crow simply because I don’t see Hobgood’s upside beyond much what Crow is today.

Townsend had a hurt wrist, which could certainly drain power.

I actually do
I was thinking about going as Plax with a gun and some blood running down my leg, but i’d want to do it all out and wearing black face is considered bad taste. I believe I still have my old Plax jersey somewhere. I think its a large but it might be a medium. I’d have to check.
haha that was my plan
But apparently it’s almost impossible to buy a Plax jersey on the internet these days. All I keep finding are Youth sizes and t-shirts making fun of him for shooting himself (which wouldn’t fit the costume very well).

Wait - I wasn't going to wear blackface.
Just a jersey, sweat pants, a skull cap with sideways yerks cap on top of it and then gun int he wasteband with blood running down. Blackface I think might result in an assbeating.
Yep
although it came out up here that he wasnt wearing sweat pants and it was actually jeans, but common belief is still that it was sweats. The fake chinese jerseys are always good for a costume as well. I went as Tony Romo last year using a chinese rip-off, but wore a skirt and carried around a football that I dropped every few minutes. My GF dressed up as Jess Simpson. It was a big hit around these parts.
Where do you get the fake chines jerseys??
He was actually wearing jeans???? Oh that makes for a much worse story though!

the website you were looking at sells fakes, for one. I actually know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who sells him fake jerseys. Its not me though. I definitely dont know the guy at all. I wouldnt do that kinda stuff.

But it’s nice to see Snyder and Bell crushing the league instead of being even average.

I agree. Bell will get his chance
in the AFL then in spring training. If he can hit (both right & left handed) and play adequate defense, I think he could be the opening day 3B. Personally, I doubt it. From what I hear, his left handed batting is ready, but right handed he needs some coaching. He also needs to learn more about charging on a bunt from what I’ve read. Maybe Brooks could show him how? Anyway, I suspect he will be in Norfolk next April and get a call up around June 1 at the earliest. Wigginton will play 3B til then.
Doubtful
I assume they’ll give him the chance at Spring Training, especially if he keeps this up in the AFL and all that, but I think we’re gonna be stuck with a couple months or so of Wiggy while Bell works in AAA. Bell’s looked solid since we’ve gotten him, and I’m optimistic he’ll be an above-average 3B in the future, but it sounds like the holes in his game (hitting as a righty, some defensive skills) should really be worked on in the minors before he’s called up.
Of course, I’d love for him to prove me wrong by getting the job out of spring training and having a good all-around season, even if he takes 2-3 months to adjust to major league pitching.
