The World Series
It features two teams I hate very much, however I know it’ll be a great series.

WHY????
Can someone tell me once again why the orioles absolutly suck at this? Their Public Relations is terrible. They want a few more people to show up to the games, start by connecting with the fans of baltimore. They just had that brooks robinson event over the past few days and not one current player showed up to the event to congradulate or thank brooks. I think it is so distasteful. It is ridiculous how they can not get it right. I am so tired of these losers both on and off the field. We have two players that try and make a connection with the community and they only do it when the season is going on and then when the season is over you don’t hear of the birds of (supposidly) baltimore untill april 1st.
I am just once again tired of the lack of professionalism.

It's a good point
I won’t compare the Orioles to any particular organization, but it does seem like the more popular/successful organizations have players and personnel that understand the importance of the history of the organization, especially to the fans. It doesn’t make me mad that no current Orioles seem bothered to honor Brooks or whatever, but it certainly does feel like a missed opportunity to connect with the fans (who are way too often forgotten about in the sporting equation).

No it's not a good point.
It’s a nutjob comment from a nutjob poster.
by O'sFan21 on Oct 27, 2009 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's a nutjob
but the basis of his point is still valid, and that is that it is too bad that no current Orioles come out for these things. How can anyone argue that fact?
Of course, it’s totally inappropriate to declare that the Orioles as a franchise are doomed because of these sorts of things or whatever…but the basic point is still there.

I don’t think the point of it was to have current players come to it. If they wanted something like that they would have held it during the season…when current players are actually around…

Excuse me
There were more colts players there than any baltimore orioles. Look as far as im concerned the orioles don’t ask much of there players. Alls they had to do was call Brian Roberts and Nick Markakis or Nolan Riemold or Matt Weiters and say hey guys look this is Brooks Robinson can you make an appearence? ITS TERRIBLE!!!!
by Oriolebird88 on Oct 27, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just call them up
And have them fly across the country? You do realize that NONE of the players stay in baltimore for the offseason right?
by O'sFan21 on Oct 27, 2009 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I understand that
You don’t call them up the night before and say that. This event has been in the works for the last two months. Point is the Orioles are doing a piss poor job of trying to make things better other than trying to make them selves winners with in the organization.
by Oriolebird88 on Oct 27, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would disagree
I think the team does a great job of community involvement and fan outreach. Having them at some celebration 3 weeks after the season ends (when EVERY player is on vacation) has NOTHING to do with “making things better.”
Again I really just have no idea what you’re talking about other than the fact that you’re reading into things WAY too much and looking for every possible excuse to criticize the organization.
by O'sFan21 on Oct 27, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
colts players,
by definition, would have been contemporaries of brooks. if you want to compare to today’s ballplayers, you’d have to compare to toay’s footballers. how many ravens were there? oh, and how many of those ravens aren’t in town right now?

I would much rather see the Ravens players practicing. Coming off a 3 game losing streak, brooks should be the last thing on their minds.
Joe Flacco's eyebrows have been charged with several penalties this season, most for acting as an "ineligible receiver downfield".
by ryuu on Oct 27, 2009 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
the current players
It would’ve been nice if one of the current players at least showed up. I am sure they are all on vacation or home after a long season away from home, but it would’ve been nice if somebody would’ve showed up, on their own accord. I mean, I would think they are all baseball fans…maybe Brooksie is too old for them, but are none of these guys baseball historians? You know, hop on a plane for a night get lunch with MacPhail or somebody. Chris Waters, this was your chance to be birdland!
But I don’t really care. Just kind of in the “annoying that only Mora went to Ellie’s funeral” kind of way.

Has this thought that Brooks is distancing himself from the Orioles ever crossed your mind? There’s been some kind of friction between Brooks and Angelos in the past. We don’t know much of the details, but I implicitly trust Brooks Robinson. He wants to stay close to Baltimore, but maintain some distance from Angelos. The disgrace is the two sides could never work anything out. Well, more accurately, since I’ve stated I implicitly trust Brooks Robinson in this matter, the disgrace is that one side in this relationship could never overcome his issues.
by drj on Oct 27, 2009 11:19 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I've never been totally clear
on what caused the rift, but you’re right that it’s a disgrace. And I think everyone would implicitly trust Brooks being that he’s seriously one of the most amazing humans to have ever walked the earth.

Hopefully, whomever caused the rift (and I assume it it’s Angelos), this is the first step in healing it.
Brooks got his Lifetime Acheivement Rawlings Gold Glove Award (not it’s real name, but that’s basically what it was) at York before a Revs game. I know he wants to promote the Revs (and I think he’s part of a shadowy consortium that is involved with several Atlantic League teams) and that he thinks very fondly of York and is very beloved there, but I couldn’t help think he should have been in Baltimore for it.
I think reaching out to beloved former players is a way the Orioles can help improve their image, but winning would be the thing to cure-all.
It seems like whatever this is just between the Orioles and Brooks (maybe I’m stating the obvious here), not the Orioles organization vs. beloved former players in general. Ripken seems to still come around pretty often, and Palmer keeps his job despite being pretty critical of the organization when it’s called for.
I don’t know what it is about Brooks — by all accounts a super nice guy who I’ve never heard blast Angelos, aspire to buy the team, or try to call attention to himself.
I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

To tell you the truth
though I don’t do it myself, I don’t have much against other people doing it (in moderation, as with all things), but I just didn’t want to be advocating drug use when I know that younger kids/teens read this board. Also, I wondered if a mod would swoop in and be all “HEY! This is a drug-free zone!!!” but guess I didn’t have to worry about that one ;)

Was talking to somebody about this the other day
When they did your security screening, they asked about “illegal substances” correct? What if you did it while in Amsterdam?
by O'sFan21 on Oct 27, 2009 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah
They ask if you’ve illegally used any controlled substances in the past 7 years. Technically you could say no and be just fine, although it’d really be in the best interests to disclose it. The answers to those questions are less about what you have or haven’t done and more about what you aren’t willing to admit. So if you say no and technically you’re not lying because it was legal in the country you’re in, but then they interview some friends of yours who disclose the drug use, it could put a snafu in your investigation because they’d have to then determine if you didn’t tell them because of a technicality or because you really don’t want anyone to know. So it’d be best to just say, “Five years ago in Amsterdam I smoked some hash.” and they’d move on from there.
Once you have a clearance, though, the rules change a bit. When you have a clearance and you go overseas you’re often subject to US law while over there as a way to protect whatever it is that you do that requires the clearance. And we get reinvestigated every 5 years so the answer to the last 7 years question really needs to be no once you’ve been on the job for awhile.
I actually used to do background investigations for a living before I got my current position so I know a lot about it.

Yeah my fiance went through it, but she’s actually a goody goody, so she didn’t have to worry about it. So far I’m pretty purely private sector, but who knows down the road.
Did you used to hear some crazy stories from people? Or do the people with crazy stories generally get weeded out before the background checks?
by O'sFan21 on Oct 27, 2009 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah I heard crazy stuff
For the most part I worked the Baltimore area where the majority of the work came from that one big three letter agency in MD and the contractors that work with them. Because of the technical nature of the work most of the people who have that skill set don’t have very interesting backgrounds. Simply put, they’re nerds :) I also did some work in DC when necessary and that got sort of interesting, but not really.
The best was when I’d go on the road for a detail where they were hiring people for work that was really different than what I was used to. I spent a month in NJ doing background checks for people applying for jobs with ICE. A lot of them worked at the ports and were these super blue collar dudes. I heard a TON of crazy stuff up there. Drugs, people stealing shit, being involved with the mob, you name it. The people in Maryland are much more boring.
And of course, the most fun person to interview was the ex-spouse. They would tell you anything.

Does weed really count as "drugs"???
by O'sFan21 on Oct 27, 2009 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs

by twistedlogic on Oct 27, 2009 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah I know technically it is, but I just don't think weed when I hear drugs. I think powder, pills, tabs, etc.

and told the tennis people he accidentally drank a soda that his assistant had put the meth in and they believed him and dropped the suspension.
