Roster Decisions (Updated)
UPDATED - I figure I can just keep a rolling tally of what the Orioles have done until the winter meetings for all of our references, so this is the latest roster as of 11/9.
* means needs protection from Rule V Draft
Definitely on the Roster (28 players):
Brandon Erbe*
Josh Bell*
Steve Johnson*
Armando Gabino
Definitely off the Roster (11 players):
Sean Henn
Jeff Fiorentino
Chris Lambert*
Jim Miller*
Guillermo Rodriguez
Chad Moeller
Rich Hill
Bob McCrory*
Decisions (19 players):
Alberto Castillo
Josh Perrault*
Luis Lebron*
Pedro Florimon, Jr.*
Chad Thall*
Blake Davis*
Scott Moore*
Also, the arbitration eligible players are Scott, Ray, Guthrie, Hill, Albers, and Meredith.
So the question is, you can take up to 12 of the 19 "decisions" players (though you might want breathing room for free agency). Who gets brought back in 2010?
FanPosts are user-created content and do not necessarily reflect the views of the editors of Camden Chat or SB Nation. They might, though.

funny, I started writing something like this up a few days ago
but ultimately got a little bored with it, so I’m glad someone brought it up. Here’s the actual 40 man: http://baltimore.orioles.mlb.com/team/roster_40man.jsp?c_id=bal
I agree with all of your definites, but of the decisions column I can’t even pick 13. I’d go with:
Michael Aubrey
Lou Montanez
Rhyne Hughes*
Chris Ray
Dennis Sarfate
Mark Hendrickson
Chad Moeller
Cla Meredith
Josh Perrault*
Luis Lebron*
Pedro Florimon, Jr.*
Wtih a few of those guys getting dropped for new acquisitions. You could also swap Fio for Lou if you wanted, I guess. But I’d be sad if Lou got taken in the Rule 5 draft and we had to stop telling people to deal with him.

I think we'd just have to waive Lou, rather than expose him to the Rule V
but it’s the same idea. I guess there’s really no reason to keep both Fio and Lou, but I can’t choose I guess. I ultimately think Fio has a better chance at being the 4th outfielder because he’s a better defender (I’m going on a hunch with that).
Also, I don’t know about this, but we might be able to put Rich Hill back on the 60-day DL in the winter, which would free up a space. That doesn’t sound right, but it doesn’t exactly sound wrong, either.

Is Lou out of options?
I can never pay attention to that stuff.
I don’t think you can put people back on the DL until the season starts again.

As I understand it
an “option” has the player on the 40-man but not the 25-man. To remove anybody from the 40-man you have to “waive” him and let some other team claim them (or not, and then you can “outright” the player to the minors).

Looking at the current 40-man roster it looks like we are going to be squeezed in the infield and pitching.
I’d imagine that we keep all 6 outfielders on the 40-man with the possible exception of Lou.
I have to imagine we will only keep two catchers on the 40man as we don’t have a real prospect.
Pedro Florimon Jr shouldn’t be on the 40 man since he’s only played 7 games above a-ball and as far as I know isn’t a defensive specialist.
Pitching-wise we’re going to drop a lot of bullpen arms. I say we drop McCrory, Lampert, Sean Henn, Waters, Hoey, Perrault. Jim Miller will probably remain on the roster.
We may opinion Matuez since he’s not vulnerable to the rule V draft and then put him back on the roster after spring training (I’m pretty sure he didn’t sign a major league deal when drafted. If he did then he needs to be on the 40 man)

If they keep McCrory on the roster over almost anyone on that list
I would be less than impressed. McCrory is complete garbage.

Not a chance
that he stays on the roster. Shoulder injuries are trickier than elbow injuries and I can’t imagine any team drafting him and keeping him on their 25 roster for a full year as he’ll be horrible for that time. Unlike Hill he doesn’t have huge potential so I can’t imagine it occuring.

I totally misread what you wrote in your first post
For some reason I thought you were saying they’d keep McCrory. I was confused.

It's really too bad
I saw him pitch in the AFL finals a few years back and he looked pretty good IIRC, and then would just completely and utterly turn into Cory Doyne when he came up to Baltimore.

He's good a good arm.
But he must not hide the ball at all and most of the time he has no clue where it’s going within the strike zone. That kind of combo doesn’t work against good hitters.

It's highly unlikely
We let go of new Aubrey. He’s shown that he can play.

He can't hit
I’d keep him around, definitely. He’s great with the glove. A decent guy on the bench or at AAA in case someone gets hurt. But he hasn’t been much of a hitter since getting promoted to AA. Not a guy who can stick at a corner IF position especially. His numbers at the end of the year were pretty good but it was less than 100 ABs.

I thought his bat looked great at the end of the year
but I guess it was a small sample size. I never looked at his minor league numbers but I take your word for it if you’re not impressed. He’ll be handy on the bench, at the very least.
by O Nina on Oct 27, 2009 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
He did look good and that makes me feel very charitable towards him, but his numbers don’t back it up. I was surprised when I saw it actually but I suppose Cleveland wouldn’t let him go for no reason. He’s had about 1400 plate appearances in AA and AAA and with an OPS of about .750. That’ll never fly for a 1B in the MLB. In 2009 there were 31 first basemen in the majors with at least 400 plate appearances and only nine of them had an OPS under .800 (only one had an OPS under .700, our boy Aubrey Huff).

Surprising
When he was picked up, I thought people had described him as a good hitting prospect.
Looking back now two articles on fangraphs describes him as a player with gap power and could have a good average since he doesn’t strike out much.
What’s odd about that is that at Double and Triple A his highest OBP was .330. Slugging he’s been subpar but not terrible averaging around .430-440. Because of the two his OPS hasn’t cracked .800 over high A with the exception of a 6 game stint in 2006
That said it’s important to note that in 2006 and 2007 he played a total of 79 games combined due to injuries. It’s probably safe to assume that he has been dragged down by injuries to some degree like Carlos Quentin was, although 2009 should be close to his true talent level. In any case he out-performed at the MLB level. Even still he’s a useful player, maybe a defensive first-baseman like Casey Kotchman and he should be a good bench player.
by OsandRoyals on Oct 27, 2009 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
But weren’t they saying that he had some kind of injury before that? I thought there was some theory that he might actually now be actually showing what he can really do.
by O'sFan21 on Oct 28, 2009 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Injury History
2005 chronic back issues
2006 surface fracture on right knee
2007 played through injuries for the first time: nagging abdominal, groin and hamstring issues
2008 first time he played 100 games in a season.
by OsandRoyals on Oct 28, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah so who knows? Maybe he's got more potential than people though.
by O'sFan21 on Oct 28, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If we going to play this game
and say “Well, Michael Aubrey turned the corner! He can be our first baseman! He was good in the dozen games he played in in September!” then we’re basically giving up. Aubrey is a backup corner infielder, and I don’t even know if he can play any other positions.
Yes, it is possible that he is a latter-day Carlos Pena and becomes a monster after a lot of failure…but you cannot count on such things. It is folly.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
by Andrew @ TLC on Oct 29, 2009 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hence why
we have two other first basemen for him to compete against.
I feel that we’re going to have at least one firstbasemen or at least a platoon out of our five (Luke Scott and Wiggy included) possible first-basemen
by OsandRoyals on Oct 29, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think anyone was saying that...
just that he might not be as worthless as some people have thought. Instead of writing him off, he could be a decent-hitting, solid defensive 1B who would be handy paired with Wiggy (I’m still iffy on Scott) until we do get our magic first baseman.
by O Nina on Oct 29, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
How are we "giving up"?
He’s a former top draft pick who’s had a ton of injuries and is no finally healthy and hit the shit out of the ball for a few weeks in the majors. He costs us NOTHING, so why not give him a shot in spring training and see what he can do? I don’t see how that’s giving up even a little bit. No idea what that means in fact.
by O'sFan21 on Oct 29, 2009 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ok ok ok
maybe not “giving up”, but if you start convincing yourself that you have something that is more useful than it really is, then you’re in trouble is all.

I just don't want to see
Someone saying “We don’t need to deal for a genuine slugging first baseman because we have Scott, Wigginton, Aubrey, and Snyder”. Not that anyone is…but it would still be a bad line of thought. Not that there are any genuine slugging first baseman really available.

I'm not convincing myself of anything
Other than that we have a former top prospect (or at least a top pick) who had a string of injuries and is now finally healthy and I watched him hit the shit out of the ball while playing great defense at 1B. We also have no other options currently, so I see no harm in letting him see what he can do until we do have other options.
by O'sFan21 on Oct 29, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
but I really don’t think he’ll turn into anything. And I suspect you don’t either. But no harm in finding out for the time being.

I think Alberto Castillo deserves more love
No reason to cut him from the 40-man until we need his spot.
I’d be astounded if anyone selected Florimon in the Rule V.
by James F on Oct 27, 2009 4:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Castillo wasn't awful in '09
But he’s a 34 year old reliever who was in the independent league from 1999 to 2007. For a one or two out guy he could be valuable next year, or he could turn to garbage. Could help to have around but no big loss if he can’t be held on to.

If he doesn't perform...
…it just makes the discussion of who to cut when it comes time to add Arrieta to the 40 man easy.
Some of the guys we hold on to for the Rule V will be casualties if/when we sign any free agents anyways. That said, it also bears keeping in mind that we aren’t allowed a pick in the Rule V draft unless we have room on the 40 man roster when it begins.

puzzled
I’m a little puzzled, or at least could make arguments that some of the decision clients are easy choices and some of the definites on the roster should be decisions.
Decision to stick:
Meredith pitched well enough to stay
Jim Miller closed effectively in AAA last year, not sure why he wasn’t promoted in September (injury?)
Alberto Castillo should be a LOOGY candidate in the spring
Mark Hendrickson likely will make the roster, but not til after the Rule 5
Perriault, Lebron, Florimon and Thall were all recently added, so I assume it was for a reason.
Montanez is nice depth guy
As for the definites…Jason Berken could be as fungible as Chris Waters IMO. Wilfredo Perez might have an arm, but he is likely soon to be out of options and didn’t inspire a lot of faith in Bowie. I mean, I’d keep both, but if it meant between either of those guys and a Rule 5 pick who can maybe mash (like another, dare I say, Jay Gibbons), I’d take the Rule 5 pick.
all IMO of course.

Not on the 40-man roster
and not eliglble for the Rule V draft, so he’ll stay on Norfolk’s roster until at least Spring Training.

I agree except for Sarfate.
I think Albers can be exposed and no one will take him (do we care?) but Sarfate desrves a shot in Norfolk or Spring Training. He looked pretty good late in the year. Albers on the other hand, got a full chance and showed nothing of MLB stature.

That's fine
but I do want to point out that Matt Albers was better than Dennis Sarfate last year, albeit in a bigger role. And frankly I don’t think even moderately of either one of them. It would be a small surprise if they were both around in Spring Training.

I figured at least until after the Rule V draft
after that it’ll be pretty much set and available at the official site. I put this together because I couldn’t find a handy guide to who was arbitration eligible, who needed protecting, and who was a non-tender/waiving candidate. And now we have one! How convenient, right?
But after the winter meetings, it’ll basically just be a list of arbitration candidates, and that’s just not interesting to me.
