So I just noticed
that ravensfan3 also has Ronnie Welty as his breakout candidate. Hmmmmm consensus breakout pick?
I think he had a great season last year
And he looks like a great defender. I’m not sure how many ther people know of him.

not me
He had a really high BABIP with a lot of Ks and little power. I don’t see him breaking out at all, though I’d love to be proven otherwise.

He actually had
a fair amount of power considering his age and league. Most younger prospects develop power as they develop. I was a bit concerned about his high BABIP when I picked him. The strikeouts might not matter as much as that can be compensated for .
I have to be honest I only looked at his OBP and not his walk rate. If you multiply his plate appearances by his walk rate and add his average there’s still a .036 difference between that and his OBP. It’s possible he has a Carlos Quentin like hit by pitches rate I guess
Oh yeah
his slugging percentage was 17th in the league while his OPS was 16
Also some of the players who had better slugging percentages and OPS were old for the league and those players would be expected to dominate the league
As far as homers go
Perdue Stadium isn’t exactly a homer park – the ball doesn’t carry very well.

didn't know that
That eases some of my reservations.

Waring
Britton (as I am guessing Matusz doesn’t count)
Erbe
Rowell
Bell
Erbe
I listed Brandon Erbe twice. Most improved because when he was healthy, the guy was filthy. But there is the problem…the injuries. I think that Brandon will have what could truly be considered his “breakout” season in 2010 and we could see him in the big leagues near the end of next season.

Who is your Orioles’ minor league pitcher of the year from 2009? Brian Matusz (Britton if Matusz don’t count)
Who is your Orioles’ minor league most improved player from 2009? Don’t really have one
Which Orioles’ minor leaguer was the biggest disappointment in 2009? Avery, Hoes, Miclat
What Orioles’ 2009 minor leaguer do you think will make the biggest impact in the majors in 2010? Jake Arrieta

My 2 cents
Batter = Jeff Fiorentino
Pitcher= Zach Britton
Most Improved = Brandon Erbe
Disappointment = Billy Rowell
2010 Impact = Josh Perrault
Note: I posted these guys thinking that it isn’t always the big name that makes the biggest impression a year ago I had no idea 3E existed… Britton was a no brainer and has earned a AA assignment. Perrault looks like a guy that could find his way to the bullpen if the disabled list gets out of hand. As for Josh Bell’s absense I think it’s best to be patient and let him develope in AAA.

My picks
I assume Jacobson, Bell, Reimold, Tillman, Matusz, Hernandez, Bergesen, Wieters, Berken, etc. are off limits here (well, Bell and Jacobson and the draftees are eligible for the last two questions).
Batter – Ronnie Welty. Not that there’s a lot to choose from in the system, with Joseph, Waring, and Snyder the only other candidates, really. But a .370 wOBA, a .373 OBP, 10 home runs, and as far as I know good outfield defense at age 21 is hard to ignore.
Pitcher – Jake Arrieta. I had a chance to see him in Rochester at the very end of the season and he was very good. At one point he threw back to back breaking balls to get out of a jam that had me still talking about them a week later. He seemed to find his rhythm after some initial struggles at AAA (and after beating up the Eastern League). I’m excited to see him fit in somewhere in 2010 in Baltimore.
Improved – Brandon Waring. He did everything that was asked of him, cutting down on his strikeouts but maintaining his great power, and he stayed healthy all year. He went from Crash Davis to real prospect for me, and that’s nothing to sneeze at. Now do it against competition your own age.
Disappointment – Troy Patton. He couldn’t stay healthy all year, and he was terrible in Norfolk after being excellent in Bowie. Remember, this guy has already seen the majors. I really thought we’d see him after Berken and Hernandez struggled, but he didn’t step up at all.
Impact – Josh Bell. I’d bet he’s in Baltimore after the All-Star game and has a reasonable second half, but looks like the second coming of Matt Wieters after we sit through 3 months of Ty Wigginton at third base.
Breakout – Rick Zagone. It was sort of a toss-up between Zagone and Ronnie Welty (who I like a lot more than is probably warranted, but come on – he won the All-Star off of the Yankees’ switch-pitcher!). Anyway, I like Zagone a lot. He doesn’t give up many home runs and has a very reasonable walk rate. I’d like to see more strikeouts, though…but I’m guessing we’re talking about him as much next year as we are about Zach Britton this year.
