Around SBN: Did The Giants Run Buddy Ryan's 'Polish Goalline'?

Way Nerdy Question

I like to play in whatifsports.com simulated baseball leagues.  I've joined a theme league where you take a franchise and construct a team using any player who played for that franchise over the past 25 years using any individual season of that player regardless of whether that season took place on the francise you've selected.  I've selected the Baltimore Orioles as my franchise which means (for example) I can take Sammy Sosa and use the season he hit 66 home runs even though he was on the Cubs at the time.

Can you guys think help me think of players who might prove useful for this endeavor?  So far I have Roberto Alomar, Fred Lynn, Albert Belle, Tim Raines, Sammy Sosa, Kevin Brown, Jamie Moyer, Curt Schilling, Mike Timlin, Randy Myers, Arthur Rhodes, and Cla Meredith in addition to guys like Mike Mussina and Jim Palmer who played for the Orioles in their prime.  Who are some other former Orioles who had the best years of their careers on another team?

hmm...

Some of these guys had greatyears with the O’s, but had good seasons in other places as well:
Will Clark, Frank Robinson, Reggie Jackson, Doug Drabek, BJ Ryan, Rafael Palmeiro, Bobby Bonilla, Jimmy Key, David Wells, Jason Werth, Miguel Tejada

Off the top of my head...

Since 1984:

Eric Brynes, Eric Davis, John Maine, David Wells, Bobby Bonilla, Dennis Martinez, Fred Lynn, Glenn Davis, Jesse Orosco, Steve Finley, Rick Sutcliffe, Fernando Venezeula, Jaret Wright, Jimmy Key, Todd Zeile, David Dellucci, Doug Drabek, Will Clark, Jeff Conine, Casey Blake, Gary Matthews, Jr., David Segui, Jack Cust, Pat Hentgen, Javy Lopez, Russ Ortiz, Danys Baez, and perhaps Rafael Palmero.

A lot of those guys are role players, but Dennis Martinez and Fernando Venezeula are probably the gems you are looking for.

What about Benitez? Do saves help?

His 2000-2001 years with the Mets and 2004 with the Marlins were pretty absurd.

In 1999 he had a 14.8 k/9 – RIDICULOUS!

It is fun

My league is full-up, but you should check out the site. It’s a fairly enjoyable diversion.

how about

1996 Brady Anderson? His OBP wasn’t as good as Delucci or Raines but otherwise that was a better season. Also I think Palmeiro’s 1999 at 1B would be better than Eddie Murray’s 1990.

I like this game!

some more

2003 Javy Lopez.
2001 Sammy Sosa kicks 1998 Sammy Sosa’s ass.

My mistake

I drafted 2001 Sammy Sosa, not 1998

The simulation rewards on-base percentage above all else

That’s why Tim Raines would be a better choice than Brady Anderson, even though Anderson hit 50 home runs that year. Good call on Palmeiro, although the simulation normalizes so it may be that Murray and Palmeiro are ultimately of equal worth (

relievers

2002 Buddy Groom was sick. And 2006 B.J. Ryan. I would those two players over any year of Cla Meredith.

Is there a Randy Myers year that would work?

Or Lee Smith?

For pitching the simulation rewards WHIP above all else

That’s why Cla Meredith will be my closer. The simulation also makes you regret drafting any pitcher who has more than 2 walks per 9 innings, because it rewards OBP so highly and everyone knows it. That’s why I’m a little leery of B.J. Ryan.

2002 Buddy Groom had a WHIP of .90. Cla’s WHIP in 2006 is a tick better but Buddy pitched 12 more innings which is quite a lot of innings for a reliever.

Actually, 2006 BJ Ryan is just sick. His WHIP is almost as low as Cla in 2006 but BJ pitched 22 more innings. And this isn’t factoring in ballpark effects.

2006 Meredith is .71

That’s about as low as it gets. As far as innings goes, I have enough innings from other relievers that his 50 should be fine. At some point I’ll put up my final team.
