You cannot be serious.

That’s a sobering reminder of the passage of time. On the plus side, now I know who to blog about tonight.

Stupid question of the day

BRob: Does he reach 700 doubles? Okay, fine. How about 600 then?

Grich

Is that the same one that stole Christmas?

I'd rather have

Luke/Nolan/New Aubrey/Snyder then Dye or Delgado. Unless we get either one of them for really cheap, it’d be a waste of money.

I now have a blog: http://justanotherbaltimoresportsblog.blogspot.com/

my guess is so does MacPhail

Since we don’t have an established option in 1B, we’re almost obligated to take a look at any 1B option that could possibly turn out worthwhile. That includes the good options like Nick Johnson, the mediocre options like Adam LaRoche, and the bad options like Hank Blalock. But as you say, unless we can get an extremely good deal for a free agent 1B, I highly doubt we will sign one.

Here’s how I see it. Ty Wigginton should not be playing any position other than 1B. We have a ton of platoon partners for him lying around, including Michael Aubrey, Rhyne Hughes, and Luke Scott. I think Wigginton + platoon partner = 800-850 OPS at 1B with league average defense, which is mediocre, but it’s not bad for a cheap short-term solution.

So the real hole isn’t going to be 1B – it’s going to be 3B, which happens to have more options available. I’d much rather see us sign Adrian Beltre (if he’ll accept a 1 year deal for some stupid reason), Troy Glaus, Joe Crede, or even Pedro Feliz – I’m sure one of these guys will accept a 1 year deal for the chance to get regular playing time at a hitter friendly park. They can all field, and they all have the potential to hit well (it’s not like we got a ton of production out of that position last season, anyway).

by ugen64 on Nov 24, 2009 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

I should clarify

by “more options”, I mean “more options who would improve our infield defense and have a chance to hit well”. The difference between 3B Wigginton / 1B free agent and 3B free agent / 1B Wigginton is huge, if the 3B we sign is a half-decent fielder (and all 4 of the guys I mentioned are plus defenders).

by ugen64 on Nov 24, 2009 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

1 year deal?

Is a one year deal there to warm the seat for Bell?

by DCO'sfan on Nov 24, 2009 1:11 PM EST up reply actions

What about Russell Branyan?

The Mariners don’t seem hot to bring him back and although he says he wants to stay, some of that Angelos money might be enticing. If he works out, great. If not, Snyder/Scott/Wigginton are waiting in the wings.

I like this....

“Will they stay patient? The Orioles are building a formidable nucleus and don’t need to force anything by returning to their misguided spending sprees of the ’90s.”

That makes more sense than about 75% of the posts on Roch’s blog…..

Bobby Grich

Bobby Grich was really, really good. For several years, Grich and Belanger both won Gold Gloves while playing for the Os. Bobby also hit. Grich was not as good as Robby Alomar, but is in second place on the all-time Os team. At least in my opinion.

Video of O's AFL players

Slacker George posted this on Sickel’s blog. Quality vids of Bell, Erbe, Waring, Snyder and many other prospects.

Erbe has a funky delivery.

I haven’t seen any footage of him before that I can recall. I like it; I imagine that it adds some deception, as they like to say.

Really other than the slight hitch before his plant foot lands

It’s a really standard/solid delivery. Really good front side and good use of hips. Also no head movement.

Why is there no video of Bell batting right handed? Looks like the ball jumps off his bat pretty well.

by O'sFan21 on Nov 25, 2009 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the delivery; I just didn’t know to expect that little hitch.

I was wondering the same thing about Bell.

Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.

by Vuff on Nov 25, 2009 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

The hitch

is probably a result of him really trying not to land on the ball of his foot and not on his heel.

a few things

i read somewhere that josh johnson is a great pick up and would add a ace to our rotation. i personally think he is overrated and unproven and wouldnt waste 38m on him.

jermaine dye as 1st low risk hih reward we all know he can hit and still has some speed
just his def wouldn’t be great but hell neither is scott’s or wiggy’s

3rd base i don’t think the future of our 3b man will be ready in 2-3 year i don’t even think he is mlb starting material sign beltre 2 years ait for a trade or some one to sign because who we have as options i dont like pitchers sheets wellenmyer sound good to me

by chuckthefan on Nov 24, 2009 7:11 PM EST reply actions

why don't you think...

that he’ll be ready in “2-3 years”? Just curious to know what it is that you see that makes you think he’s that far away from contributing.

By the way

I like the random use of punctuation in the first “paragraph” before abandoning it for the rest.

Standing strong though with not a single capitalization! I like it.

by O'sFan21 on Nov 25, 2009 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

well

i see him more of a platoon player then a everday player if he does start i see these numbers 10-15 hr 60 rbi’s mediocre defense low obp whip and may be less he hasn’t proven anything and i think his defense could be worse then it is showing

by chuckthefan on Nov 24, 2009 9:38 PM EST reply actions

He is a 3B, he doesnt have WHIP?

well screw it

if he has a low whip, sign me up as a fan. He can be our closer and a platoon “3B man” then. We’re set!

I found this, thought I'd share.

An old picture, but I ran across it on flickr. I miss Kevbo. Well, the person. Perhaps we’re better off without the baseball player…
